Page 3 of 31 OFFICE OF GREEK LIFE RECORDS RG #A0304 1927-1996 LSU LIBRARIES SPECIAL COLLECTIONS BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE The Office of Greek Life, formerly known as the Office of Greek Affairs, is overseen by the Office of the Dean of Students currently (as of 2021) under the auspices of the Division of Student Life. There are currently 14 sororities and 20 fraternities on campus. In 1867, Sigma Alpha Epsilon was the first fraternity established on campus; the first sorority was Kappa Delta, established in 1909. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Office of Greek Life Records consist primarily of topical files on individual fraternities, sororities, and organizations such as the Fraternity Advisory Board, the Interfraternity Council, and the Panhellenic Council on subjects of collective interest such as Greek Week, bid night, rush, housing, charitable activities, and Songfest mainly between 1958 and 1990. The topical files consist of correspondence, reports, financial records, and meeting minutes. Also included are records from the Office of Greek Affairs pertaining to the topics mentioned above along with records concerning its administrative functions. Photographs depict groups such as the Panhellenic Council, Greek Steering Committee, and various group activities, fraternity and sorority houses, and campaigning for George H. W. Arranged alphabetically by topic, this series consists of records on topics pertaining especially to fraternities such as alcohol and drug abuse policies; hazing; teaching awards; fraternity advisors; African American students; fraternity finances and audits; meeting minutes and constitutions of the Fraternity Advisory Board and Interfraternity Council; statistics on grades and fraternity membership; information on Greek Week, Homecoming, Jam Jam, rush, South Seas, Old South, and other fraternity activities; and initiation and pledge regulations. Arranged alphabetically by the names of the fraternities, the series consists of audit reports, plans for new fraternity houses, rush, police investigations and investigations of hazing and vandalism incidents by Louisiana State University (LSU) Police and other agencies, correspondence, and annual reports. Fraternities include Acacia, Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Phi Kappa Tau, Phi Kappa Theta, Sigma Nu, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Zeta Beta Tau, and others. Subgroup 3. Arranged alphabetically by topic, this series consists of records pertaining especially to sororities on such topics as alcohol and drug abuse awareness, lot assignments for new sorority houses built in the early 1960s, financial information, African American sororities and students, sorority grade point averages, hazing, and the Panhellenic Council including meeting minutes, awards, constitutions, and sorority rush. Arranged alphabetically by the names of the sororities, this series consists of correspondence and reports on various activities of sororities, rush, establishment of new sororities, new house construction and moving from old houses to new ones, and newspaper articles. Sororities include Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Delta, Sigma Kappa, Zeta Phi Beta, Zeta Tau Alpha, and others. Correspondence and Letters, 1980-1991. Arranged chronologically, this series consists of letters between the Office of Greek Affairs and various campus entities such as the Dean of Students, Office of the Chancellor, LSU Police, individual fraternities and sororities, and the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council. Topics include activities such as rush, South Seas, and Songfest; fees and payment owed by fraternities and sororities for garbage pickup, event security, printing, food, and other items purchased; congratulatory letters to newly-elected fraternity and sorority presidents; and fraternities and sororities seeking to establish new chapters on campus or recolonize dormant chapters. Series II. Topical Files, 1962-1996, undated. Arranged alphabetically by topic, this series consists of records pertaining to alcohol and drug abuse; sexual harassment; fraternity and sorority rush; football tickets; campus vandalism; fraternity and sorority membership rosters; race relations; risk management and avoidance; publicity; various events such as Derby Days, Songfest, Greek Week, South Seas, Jam Jam, and others; administrative records of the Office of Greek Affairs pertaining to its operation; and information requested from other colleges and universities such as Tulane and the University of Mississippi
