The First Word My blood is red… and gold!

It’s a crucial time for both our Premier teams this weekend. A strong Round 2 performance has seen us score crucial away wins at Miramar and Island Bay, and the always tough Waterside at fortress Hutt Park. All three matches were targeted as potential ‘banana skin’ games. And with it we remain top of the league. Who needs reminding that after the Round 1 Petone match, we were languishing in 6th place. However since then we’ve gone on a tidy run, unbeaten in eight and we are now league leaders.

As is tradition the glory boy strikers up front get all the headlines but a special mention to the defence. With a settled back 5 of JT , Bron, Fizz, Reggie plus Rarda offering a vocal presence plus quite a few top drawer saves, we have recorded six clean sheets with just ten goals conceded in our twelve premier league matches to date.

And after the disappointment of our Round 1 fixture with Petone there is no shortage of motivation to improve on that performance. There is no talk of revenge (silly word anyway!) This is a mature outfit that understand our destiny is in our hands and it’s about the quality of our performance that is the focus each week. If we play to our ability the results will come! Brandon Tai As it stands today the league has effectively split into two leagues with the top five fighting it out for the title (albeit that the two second teams in the mix can’t get promoted). The relegation fight sees Seatoun and Lower Hutt as the favourites for the drop. There seems far too much quality in the player stocks for Petone or Island Bay to go down.

And now to our other 1st team. Our Women’s Premier team are one match away from the title. Tomorrow they host Brooklyn Northern United— the top 2 sides– and for us a solitary point will crown us champions again for 2014. (See Brendan Marsh’ s roundup within this programme)

Much credit for the ongoing success of all of our Senior teams goes to the ‘back room staff’. We have put a major focus on the development of our Strike partners– Gaughan and Maluvik Coaches and Managers and we are fortunate to now have a very high calibre coaching group across the wider club. This group are as good if not better than3 anything going around. So thanks to Sambo, Scotty, Stuey, Elliot and their able lieutenants, Russ, Paul, Raffa and Craig for their skill and effort. Please enjoy the football today and enjoy our Stop Out hospitality!

MASTERS 5 UPDATE It’s still on for the Blacks in Masters 5. A tight 0-1 loss to Naenae last week leaves it all to play for today. A draw last week also halted Marist’s push for the title so all was not lost for Lenny’s lot. Truth be known Lenny threw the game last week so he could return to his spiritual home and win the title on the hallowed Hutt Park turf, and importantly within sniffing distance of the bar! So yes the main game at Hutt Park today - we’ll actually the main game on Number 3 today - sees the Blacks host BNU the one team that sits between them and a league title. A comfortable 3-0 victory in the first round is cold comfort for the Blacks, however the performance of their miserly defence in conceding just a goal a game all year should see them home.

If not there’s always a Plan B! Word on the street is that Alastair has been polishing the whistle, reading up on his ‘Football for Dummies’ book and is ready for a Man of the Match performance in the middle. No chance of defeat and a plan for a long night of liquid refreshments!

We’ve contacted Lion Breweries and they’ve scheduled an extra shift to produce a bit more of the Blacks liquid amber of choice. So the extra pallet of Lion Brown is chilling on ice for the expected outcome! Of course McCreadies Clowns could do the Blacks a favour and tip over Naenae in their game today —but then again maybe not.

Word has it Chris Hansen might shout his first ever round at Alastair’s been warming up the club after 40 odd years of playing if the Blacks get up for the big game. and win. Looking forward to that!

Women’s roundup Nervous an---ti---ci---pa-----tion this week as the Premiers look to secure back to back titles and as the draw-gods would have it the last match of the league season is hosting BNU who are the only team who can pip them for the title. So there’s not a lot more to say than tomorrow, Hutt #1 at 1pm the team, Elliott and Craig would love your sideline support. The teams are separated by just 2pts and we have that slim lead atop the table.

Around the other teams the Reds are a revelation in recent weeks, getting their first win the other weekend with a resounding 4-0 win over BNU and following that up with a hard fought 3-3 at KCU. Weka Park, Raumati is where local ref’s rules apply and just like Old Trafford time is added on till the locals have exhausted all their hopes of a come-back. A few new recruits making an impact – and for that the team and Terry are most grateful. Tomorrow at 3pm it’s the turn of IBU to try and stop the girls and their run of results in D3.

The Blacks had a great weekend away, a Saturday night of freedom from husbands and boyfriends in the mighty ‘Rapa before an early kick off versus the locals. Apparently the girls all did each other’s hair in the morning – no mention of what they did with Coach Angus’ silky locks before the game! Tomorrow they host Paekakariki at Hutt Park – another early kickoff will challenge their powers of recovery but at least they’ll be able to get side line and cheer on the Premiers after their game.

D1 are on a mission tomorrow, off to Wakefield to tackle the students – looking to break their duck and get themselves off the bottom of the table. The football’s been beautiful but as we all know if you don’t stick it in the old onion bag more often than the other team you can’t win games. Clubrooms open tomorrow – we’d love to see you pitch Womens 2 (Blacks) on tour in the ‘rapa! 7 side and then join us for the afters!

MENS PREMIER LEAGUE Match reports. Chris Sambrooke

After our last minute win against Miramar, a result which Stop Out 2 vs Waterside 0 put us top of the league for the first time this season, we Hutt Park 1, 28th June 2014 returned home to defend our position against a very tough Scorers: Gaughan, Porter. Karori side. MOM Joe Gaughan.

Karori had lost their unbeaten record in the league and come to us after back to back defeats to Miramar and Island Bay, with that in mind we knew they would be desperate to pick up maximum points to get them back in the race.

The game began with Hutt Park looking in great condition but it was heavy and started to cut up a little as the game went on, making it hard on the legs and difficult to control in tight areas. The first half was tight with few chances. Joe was finding space in behind the right back who was eager to join the Karori attacks as often as possible but left a big space for us to use.

The game reached halftime with a couple of half chances for us, and Matthew “Peanut” Everard being forced into one regulation save at his near post.

The second half began much like the first, but as the game went on we looked defensively sound and started to control the midfield and create chances. The space down Joe’s side remained an opportunity for us, and a threat for them. Eventually, and with about 20 minutes to go Joe broke free and slotted home to give us the lead.

We continued to control the game from this point and with a few minutes to go, Conway laid on yet another assist for Paora to knock the ball home,10 his 4th first team goal of the season so far. Man of the match went to Joe Gaughan, he has scored more goals in other games this season, but in a tight match you need you strikers to create the important goals. After scoring both last week and the crucial first in this match, he continues to show what an asset he is.

Stop Out 4 vs Island Bay 0 The lads travelled to Wakefield Park to play Island Bay Wakefield Park 1, 5th July 2014 who were on a huge high after knocking out the Scorers: Aden, Gaughan 2, Maluvik previously unbeaten Miramar from the in the round of 16. The club also welcomed back Martin MOM Fisum Aden Packer, having signed from Olympic on deadline day.

Island Bay surprised us in their approach to the game. Against Miramar they looked to get

numbers behind the ball and break quickly on the counter attack. With our current run of results we expected them do adopt the same tactics. What we saw was the complete opposite, they looked to press us really high and put our back 4 and midfield under pressure. In the early stages we struggled a little to combat the press and settle into our own game plan.

It was a physical game and at certain points we

were a little worried that something might tip over the edge and we would go away from our game plan of playing positive football.

We reached the break at 0-0, we were rarely threatened but lacked a bit of quality as we move the ball forward. We spoke around ways we could avoid the press and increasing our passing accuracy in the midfield and front third.

The second half we controlled well, the opening goal game from a great run and pass from Joe for Fisum to finish with quality across the keeper. Within 10 minutes we had double the lead with a free kick from Steve headed home by Joe.

A strong and late challenge from an Island Bay midfielder meant that Island Bay had to finish the game with 10 men which effectively ended the contest.

Micky scored with a header shortly before being replaced by Simon Conway who was desperately unlucky not to get on the score sheet himself with their young keeper pulling off an unbelievable save late on.

The scoring was complete when Joe notched his second of the game. It was also Joe’s 50th goal for Stop Out in just his 29th appearance. An amazing record. The game finished 4-0. It is pleasing11 to see the goals are continuing to flow, but even more so is the consistent performances of the back four. JT and Regan are a first class centre back pairing and both MOM Fizz Fisum and Brandon were outstanding. .

WOMEN’S PREMIER Match reports Craig Darby Stop Out 3 v Wgtn Utd 1 Hutt Park 1. Sun 29th June 2014 Scorers: Hosie, Halfenberg, Back at Hutt Park and a great day for Football. After United had Williamson. dealt to us in 1st round we were keen to knock them over this MOM Halfenberg. time round we are after nothing less than a win based on a good performance. United are quite a solid unit and have been there or there abouts for most of the season.

The game as expected started as a tight tussle with no one willing to give an inch but after 30 mins the deadlock is broken with Christine opening the scoring. This seems to spur our players into action with Stop Out starting to get on top with good passing and possession starting to turn into territory. Saskia converted to send us to the break 2-0 up.

After the halftime talk we hit the ground running the second half play continues like the first with Stop th Out dominating and although United clawed one back a 70 min strike by Heather seals the game and puts it out of United’s reach. Good performance all round a team effort and 3 points in the bank still top of the table.HT 2-0 (Christine/Saskia) FT 3-1 (Heather) 3pts Saskia, 2 pts Aimee, 1 pt Mel

is unfortunate considering the size of the club. But we are there to get 3 points and take our lead at the top of the table into the last round next week against BNU.

Lower Hutt seem disinterested in playing any football with a long ball ‘Route One’ approach. This means there’s little chance of the game reaching any dizzy heights. We know what we need to do and that ‘s simply to win the game. The bumpy pitch doesn’t allow for a good passing game but we dominate Lower

Hutt and are up at halftime 2-0 Aimee 26m, Heather 36m. The second half is much like the first but we are playing down hill so LH struggle to get out of their own half and spend most of the half with 8 players behind the ball. The Last Word! Life-long Stop Out

O Jogo Bonito fan Mike Barton gives us his personal Last Wednesday I went to Brazil. Well, technically view on the beautiful it was Brazil. It was the Brazilian Embassy and the launch of a new edition of Broadsheet, a journal game!

that looks at 'new new zealand poetry' (sic). This edition is titled The Football Issue: World Cup 2014, Brazil and covers football poetry with a decent emphasis on New Zealand football.

The evening was made all the more extraordinary by the passionate performance of the former New Zealand international Michael Groom. The former Stop Out coach Maurice Tillotson, who coached

Michael at Manurewa, simply described him to me as 'a very very good player'. Michael described his attachment firstly to the game and then further to his attachment to the Brazilian game. Several times he used the the Portuguese term 'o jogo bonito' which in English means the beautiful game. He then sung in Portuguese and in a final flourish was thrown a football which he juggled effortlessly whilst a song, with a strong samba rhythm, sung by his son in law was played.

In his words. 'The artistry of football is a kind of poetry. Like the music in the line of a poem, a pass can sing with the the author's spirit, emotion, and sense of rhythm and timing. Furthermore, as poets place words side by side in formal arrangement in their search for literary alchemy, coaches seek the harmony of players in positions in pursuit of elevating a team's performance to the level of the orchestral. Football as music. Football as an art form. That moment when the game , as they say in Brazil, becomes the jogo bonito'.

Michael O'Leary the poet, novelist, publisher, performer and bookshop owner was also present. An extraordinary man of much talent I had not thought of him and football together. His piece was written about the 1967 visit of Manchester United to New Zealand. It harks back to a different and

somehow more optimistic time. These lines worked for me... 'And watching the 'Beautiful Game' in that 'Summer of Love', Brought music and sport together as if to finally prove, That a show in front of more than 26,000 at Carlaw Park, Watching Soccer could be like a rock concert where the spark, Of enthusiasm is ignited by an ultimate, primal, human desire, To belong, as in olden days when people gathered around a fire'. One of the other pieces came, rather less poetically, from the Vanguard football column in what was then the Evening Post newspaper. It was a list of twelve commandments for players. Some of were, I thought, good. Such as '11 comprise a team not one', 'The ball is made round, to go around', 'Self conceit is the footballer's greatest sin'.

Lastly, from an 1888 poem by C.W. Grace 'The ball came rolling towards me! My father's spirit rose! I breathed “I'll won my laurels. Or fall among my foes”... and then skipping forward a verse “Stop, stop! You fool! Offside!” ...such is the jogo bonito.
