The 1982 Maine Guide to Winter is a catalogue of facts which reveals how winter recreation and vacations here are a tradition as famous as a Maine winter itself.

While Maine may be most best-known for the magical excitement of its summers, its winter life and opportunities are anything but dull.

Scenic Maine is even more spectacular when its thousands of lakes are ice-bound, its huge forests and high mountains lie silent under a sparkling mantle of snow. The grandeur of the Down East rock-bound coast becomes another world, a surreal juxtaposition of glistening ice frozen in quilted patterns, grey-blue ocean, and si lent, snow-wrapped fishing villages tumbling down granite hillsides to the sea — a marvelous transformation of its summer self.

5 6

Maine knows winter. Roads are kept cleared and sanded. Travel is not limited by the very snows that turn the state into a wonderland; a time when every field, forest, lake and mountain becomes a potential playground. Hardwood — cut, split, dried and stacked — neatly holds promises of inner warmth and well-being.

Alpine or cross-country skiing in Maine is second to none. Maine's ski mountains are big, well-developed and operated in the Maine tradition of top value for your skiing dollar. The average cost of a weekend day lift ticket is less in Maine than in either New Hampshire or Vermont.

The snow on Maine's mountains piles just as deep over just as extended a ski sea son as elsewhere in .

Maine's ski areas are less crowded, resulting in shorter lift lines and more miles of pleasureable skiing for everyone from novice to expert. And the base facilities at Maine winter resorts provide for a complete, memorable winter vacation experience.

Ski touring in Maine offers unlimited vacation opportunities. Facilities include pro fessionally operated cross-country centers with well marked, groomed trails and day lodges at or near winter resorts that provide dining, entertainment and other recreation possibilities.

Much of Maine's ski touring is unique: old country inns, rural Maine farms, wilder ness sporting camps and log cabins long famous for their hearty food, all beckon with friendly hospitality and warm hearthsides. Throughout the state, ski touring in Maine offers unlimited miles of scenic trails coupled with the natural silence that prevades this sport.

Maine has long been a snowmobile enthusiasts paradise, too. Endless lakes, fields and woods criss-crossed with logging trails make it a never-ceasing sport of discov ery and a thrilling experience for snow-goers. The added pleasure of ice-fishing or traveling from one motel/inn to another through scenic wilderness areas make Maine a leader in snowmobile trekking.

Winter in Maine does not mean that nothing happens. Concerts, live theater, sporting events, shows, auctions, exhibits — they're all here . . . and more.

A winter vacation in Maine is something special. Most resorts have specific vaca tion package plans for you, your friends and family.

Don't restrict your dreams of a winter vacation in Maine to just the mountain resort areas, either. Many of the Down East coast's finest inns and motels from Ken- nebunk to Bar Harbor remain open year 'round for a truly unique and beautiful vacation experience. The reaches of Aroostook and Washington counties provide an ideal setting for a get-away-from-it-all treat for the entire family.

This year, make it Maine for Winter Vacations.

(P.S. Don't forget to bring sleds and toboggans for those simple but unforgettable Maine family outings that don't cost a thing.) GREAT WINTER GETAWAYS

Savvy vacationers know that Maine's endless variety of winter activities, plus the awesome crystalline beauty of its landscapes and seascapes, make the Pine Tree State an unsurpassed winter vacationland.

As you plan your visit to Maine, be it a quick getaway weekend or an extended stay, remember that the coastal towns and country inns you love in the summer time are now welcoming winter retreats from the hectic city.

Don't be misled into thinking they close up and sleep during the winter months. Things settle down to a comfortable pace, but there are scores of local events to enjoy, as well as cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice boating. Perhaps the best reason of all for choosing one of these getaway spots is for just plain relaxing.

The added bonus is that you can be assured of lower off-season prices — even though you'll probably come to agree that winter is the season to visit Maine.
