I learned the importance of a hands on education in a supportive teaching and learning environment where I had the opportunity to work with academic teaching, research and support staff in close concert. I also learned to think big, to not be constrained by the resources cur- rently under my control and to always strive to create more value than I consumed. Building on the founda- tion laid at UCC, I had an excellent career in the United States. As Vice President and Chief Research Officer of the University of Maryland, I became one of the high- est ranking, Irish born, academic leader’s in America, and now after a long far-away orbit, I am delighted to be back in my home town of Cork as UCC President.
