Information has been provided by high school coaches, and it has been compiled from Southern California newspapers. Helms Athletic Foundation, with offices in Helms Hall, Los Angeles, is sponsored by Paul H. Helms. The Foundation was. estab- lished on October 15, 1936. One of the purposes of Helms Athletic Foundation is that of recording the achievements of athletes, and athletic teams in all sports and in all divisions. This Southern California Prep School Track and Field Record, as are all athletic record books of a similar nature, are prepared by Helms Athletic Foundation under the supervision of W. R. Bill Schroeder, Managing Director, and are distributed to the Press, Radio, Television, Schools, Athletic Coaches and Officials, and others, without charge. Those who assisted in connection with the preparation of this edition, include Jerry Lamb, Margaret Uscola, and Dick Bank. STEVE TURNER, LANG STANLEY CHOSEN TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES OF THE YEAR FOR 1950 Two sterling performers, Steve Turner of Glendale High School, and Lang Stanley of Jefferson High School, Los Angeles, both of whom established National Interscholastic marks this year, were chosen for Helms Athletic Foundation - Southern California Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors for the 1950 season. Turner was named Southern California C.I.F. High School Track & Field Athlete of the Year, while Stanley was chosen Los Angeles City High School Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Turner set a National mark in the l£0-yard low hurdles, at IS.9 seconds, in the Southern California C.I.F. Meet, while Stanley practically burned up the track in the California State Meet, speed- ing over the $80-yard course in 1 minute, 53•9 seconds, erasing a 17-year-old mark which was manufactured by Ross Bush (Sunset High School, Dallas, Texas) in 1933. Steve Turner, in addition to bounding over the low hurdles in record time, excelled in the sprints, high hurdles, and broad jump, and took his turn in the relays. Turner's low hurdle time was 1S-9; his high hurdles time 14.1; his broad jump distance 24 feet, 6g inches; his 100-yard time 9-9 seconds; and his 220-yard time 21.8 Seconds. Steve Turner was coached by Ranier de Mandel, and Lang Stanley was coached by Estel Johnson, and Joe Barry. - 1 - •'HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TRACK & FIELD RECORD ;'F: or having been chosen Southern California High School Track & : Field Athletes of the Year, for 1950, Glendale's Steve Turner, and Jefferson's Lang Stanley have had. their names engraved upon the Paul H. Helms Trophy which is lodged in Helms Hall, in the High School Hall of Fame section. Steve Turner's name has also been engraved upon the Charles W. Paddock Memorial Trophy, and Lang Stanley's name has been en- graved upon the Fred W. Kelly Trophy, both of which are lodged in Helms Hall. Turner and Stanley were both the recipients of the Helms Athletic Foundation medal awards. Selection of Turner and Stanley as Athletes of the Year was made by members of the Helms Athletic Foundation's All Southern Califor- nia Board of Athletics. This Board has made such selections since 1937. Members of the 1950 Board were as follows: Ralph Alexander, Bud Furillo, Mory Kapp, Robert Weide, Dick Nash, Jerry Weiner, Pete Kokon, Mil Chipp, Mannie Pineda, Russ Cochran, Eddie West, Ward Gillilan, Tom Burdick, Francis Tuckwiler, James Leigh, Bill Whitney, and W. R. Bill Schroeder, Chairman. Jerry Lamb served as Secretary. Davis led Hoover High School to the Southern California C.I.F. Meet title, and to second place in the California State Meet, competing in the hurdles, broad jump and relay. Brown competed in the broad jump, sprints and relay, establishing a new National Interscholastic record of 25 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Milt Campbell (Plainfield HS, N.J.) 10.9 Jim Golliday had won the '51 AAU by 2 meters in only his second year of running, and the '52 NCAA two weeks before the trials by 1 1/2 meters from Art Bragg. The hot favorite to win the Olympic gold had injured himself in an AAU semifinal, and here took one stride in his heat and stood up clearly in pain, and then hobbled his way through the race finishing untimed. Remigino, who had finished 5th in the NCAA and hadn't qualified for the AAU final, surprisingly won the heat, and Bragg won the other race from Dean Smith.
