It took years of good-faith offerings, casual conversations and formal meetings to fi nally get some of these groups to realize this practice of sponsorship exclu- sivity was not in their own best interests – and besides, why on earth would national sponsorship be in confl ict with local sponsorship anyway? Despite this business making their feelings toward us clear by attempting to remove or obscure our logo whenever it appeared on a non-profi t ad, we assured the non-profi t groups that if we were allowed to sponsor them we would place no restrictions on who else they could deal with as long as it was done fairly and equally. By Rob Diaz-Marino Community | Spotlight November marks the half-way point for the reign of Calgary’s Emperor and Empress, so it was time to track down current reigning Empress 32 Nina Tron and Emperor 32 Michael Myte for an informal progress report. But fi rst, recalling how Empress Nina Tron encountered some interesting challenges when campaigning to become Em- press earlier this year, we asked her boy alter-ego Arin Chilton to refl ect on his experiences. “It wasn’t as much of a battle as some would make it out to be,” he said. “In every campaign there are people who want you to win, and then there are people that don’t want you to win. In this case there were some pretty loud people that didn’t want me to win, and it only encouraged me to make sure the people that did want me to win got out and voted.” Shortly after coronation, Emperor 32 Ashley Carmichael had to step down, and Mike Esbeth explained how things came about for him to be fi lling the role as Emperor in her stead. “When Ashley was elected as Emperor, she obviously want- ed to have a great year. She had to step down due to health concerns. Within the organization’s process of elevation, if one of the titles is unwilling or unable to fi nish their term, the title underneath is moved up. Recently the court raised an impressive $3000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation at Cougars bar in Turner Valley. Said Chilton, “It came through Debbie Leong who does business with the own- er of Cougars. They had been talking about it for some time, and it came to be when Justine moved back. …So through

By Rob Diaz-Marino Event | Spotlight Exposure, Edmonton’s Queer Arts and Culture Festival, launched just last year. Its overwhelming success has brought it back once again for what organizers hope to make an annual occurrence. The festival lasts nine days, and covers a huge array and virtually all disciplines of arts and queer cul- ture, kicking off with the 17th annual Loud & Queer Cabaret produced by Guys in Disguise and Work- shop West Theatre. The two evenings showcasing queer theatre, music, poetry and dance are hosted by Edmonton diva, Darrin Hagen. The festival runs from Friday November 14th, and ends on Saturday the 22nd. The festival was an initiative of Michael Phair, who is best known in Edmonton as fi ve term City Councilor. With an

By Evan Kayne Community In both Calgary and Edmonton, people lament the lack of a centralized gay neighborhood like what To- ronto has. However, is Toronto’s gay village becom- ing a victim of our struggles and successes in gain- ing acceptance? On a recent visit to Canada’s largest city I wondered if the Church Wellesley neighbor- hood would survive, and if Albertans could benefi t from having a village - or at least better support in our cities out west. These islands of tolerance and diversity were fostered in the years when you couldn’t be openly gay. This attitude is some- thing Dean Odorico of Woody’s Bar on Church Street remem- bers from his youth in Toronto. “When I was young, you went to a gay bar because you weren’t welcome in other places”. Ed Velasquez, Manager of in Toronto added: “the village was a safe haven…that’s where gay men went because there was power in ”. That feeling of “a safe haven” is still there on Church Street. As I walked around, even on a cool October months after Pride, I felt I could make a pass at 90% of the men with no problem. It’s rare you get the same level of on the whole has become more progressive and accepting of comfort in Alberta. gay men and lesbians. Is there still that need for the ghetto? Now we’re at a point where we have it. What do you them.” Tartaglio felt Calgary lacked a safe spot where all the do when you don’t have to fi ght as hard? We’re seeing teenagers coming out more frequently, because there’s more people on television (showing) how nor- mal it is in any community.” Gay as normal is not just hap- pening in Toronto. Much has been made of the gay village’s retreat from their glory days in cities across North America. Furthermore, there is the impact of the internet. You can create your own global village with accepting gay and lesbian friends from around the world, to help you realize you are not alone - you can live out a normal, average life. And “normal” to the gay community increasingly means achieving the dream of meeting the man or woman of your dreams, and then moving out to white picket fence suburbia and having 2.4 cats/dogs (or in some cases, kids). A gay vil- lage is usually set in an urban surrounding, and some may feel you can’t have your suburban dream in the middle of a city. There’s also the attitude attached to being in the village, which, according to Toronto city Councilor Kyle Rae, can be a turn-off. “There is a relentlessness to the gay culture. Getting back to the Church’s somewhat superfi cial and Wouldn’t it be amazing if the Roman Catholic Church unsophisticated understanding of homosexuality, it has welcomed and celebrated homosexuality, instead of placing always confused pedophilia (a sexual attraction to children, a blanket of dread, shame, repression and suppression over of whatever gender) and hebephilia (a sexual attraction to something as beautiful and self-affi rming as the love and teenage boys) with homosexuality (a sexual and affection at- appreciation one man can have for another? If the Church still insisted on celibacy but was open to celebrating human sexuality in all its forms, I could deal with that. But the Church is slow to change. It has held anti-sex beliefs for a millennium and shows no signs of re-evaluating its position any time soon. And when it does adopt modern ideas and methods, it goes in the wrong direction as is evidenced by the use of psychologi- cal tests (which, like IQ tests, are not terribly reliable and highly subjective) to weed out individuals who happen to be homosexual, but could be otherwise totally compatible with the priesthood. There is another biblical image that comes to mind here...that of the Scapegoat. The Tribes of Israel would symbolically transfer all their sins to a goat and release it into the desert, carrying their sins and transgressions with it. When the goat perished in the desolation of the desert, so too would their sins perish. In the modern sense, being a scapegoat has come to mean someone or something that gets blamed for some wrong or misdeed when, in fact, that individual had nothing to do with the situation. The Church is using homosexuals and by extension the gay community, as its scapegoat. It is heaping the whole sex abuse scandal upon us. As a spokesperson from SNAP, a US-based group for survivors of sexual abuse, said, “Catholic offi cials continue to fi xate on the offenders and ignore the larger problem: the church’s virtually unchanged culture of secrecy and unchecked power in the hierarchy. These broader factors are deeply rooted in the church and contribute heavily to extensive and ongoing clergy sex abuse and cover-up.”

“Brothers’ Reunion” by Lucas Entertainment, Courtesy of Adult Depot Cast: Wilfried Knight*, Ben Andrews, Jason Crew, Tommy Deluca, Anthony Marks, Arpad Miklos*, Jackson Wild. Wilfried Knight has just found out from his dad that he has a long lost brother in the city of New York. You wouldn’t think this was earth shattering news from the way Knight drops his father’s call to arrange a hook-up with his old pal Arpad Miklos. Though let’s be honest, for a hook-up with Arpad Miklos, some of us might forget about losing a left arm. Knight is quite a looker himself. The two go for some light mattress talk before things get hot and heavy. They mess around on a bed beside a 3rd storey window, through which you can see traffi c and people walking past unaware. The tinting can only do so much - jeeze, what must the neighbours think!? Nevertheless, what makes this scene out of the ordinary is that Knight does a bit of toe-sucking, and Arpad later returns the favour to clean up his climax. It’s not all hairy men in this movie. Knight’s buddy Ben is desperate for a lay, and Knight is his go-to guy. Soon a twink is there to service him, just like he wanted. I’m sure Knight’s brother will be fascinated to know his sibling is also a pimp! But never mind, Ben is HUMONGOUS, and there’s no way that twink is getting out of there without some inju- ries…and more toe sucking! Rent the movie to fi nd out what happens, though you have to know things will get pervy when the “brothers” unite. Oh, and look out for the unfortunate scene with the anal douche. So strap on your astronaut suit, because Smith is about to leave orbit. The man behind Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno recently announced that he’s planning a father-son comedy set in outer space. Sedaris and her Candy collaborator Paul Dinello have just signed a deal with 20th Century Fox TV for a new comedy series that Sedaris will write and create. She’ll also star on the new show, which will be partially scripted but will also allow Second City alum Sedaris - sister of gay essayist David and BFF of queer designer Todd Oldham - to improv. No word yet on what the sure- to-be-outrageous sitcom will actually be about, but Sedaris and Dinello will shop it around to networks before the end of the year, with hopes of winding up on cable. Romeo San Vicente once met a stranger with candy. They wound up living together for three years.

By Amanda Chapman Community | Spotlight In the fall of 2007, AIDS Calgary Awareness As- sociation relocated to a non-profi t complex at 16th Street and 10th Avenue in southwest Calgary. After a year in our new home we would like to take some time to refl ect on our successes and our ongoing commitment to the community. Our new location has allowed for several improvements to our service offerings, with the most signifi cant being the open- ing of the Calgary Cares Centre, which houses all of our client support and outreach programs. The building itself bears the name Calgary Cares Centre, which reduces barriers to access due to stigma. Other benefi ts of the new location include: visitor parking, wheelchair accessible and gender neutral bathrooms, a full kitchen for our weekly nutrition programs, client comput- er/internet access, and easy access via public transporta- tion.

By Jason Clevett Preview | Theatre Movie musicals have regained popularity in recent years. By James S.M. Demers Community | Event In the hustle and bustle of Christmas time we of- ten forget those who are left behind by circumstance. When low-income families are struggling to survive in this boomtown, affording a happy Christmas can be too much to ask. But it is an incredibly rewarding feeling to bring Christmas back to a child, especially when the whole family can be happy because of it. Toys for Tots is one such event that helps make Christ- mas miracles happen for children who might otherwise miss out. Dr. Richard Denny has been organizing the event for the past 13 years, and will be held for its seventh year at Money Pennies. The event was inspired by a similar project that he was in- volved with when living in Toronto. He held his fi rst Calgary incarnation at his own home in 1994, and things would get quite crowded with around 50 friends and family members

in attendance - it was a success, and it has continued to be ever since. Participation is very simple - bring a toy down with you, add it to the pile, and enjoy an evening of holiday cheer and atmosphere. Denny says that sometimes people are inspired to even bring three or four toys! This year’s event will fea- ture the musical styling of Toni Vere, a local folk musician, with lots of other entertainment and great food. After the last event, Country Furniture donated a truck to transport the toys to their destination at the Native Women’s Shelter and the YWCA, to be given out to those families in need. Even if you are unable to attend that particular evening, donations are accepted at Money Pennies starting at the beginning of December. Cash donations are also accepted at the event in lieu of a toy. Put a smile on a child’s face this year, feel good about yourself and demonstrate what Christmas is really about: giving. I assume you are with him or her because you truly value this individual – if that is not the case, you really need to look at what is still holding the two of you together. As- suming you do cherish your partner, he or she deserves the very best from you. There is really no place for dishonesty in an intimate relationship, and as you probably already know, outside sexual activity can put your partner at undeserved risk for contracting sexually transmitted diseases from you. Many gay coupled men actually like the idea of allowing out- side sexual activity, so don’t be afraid to discuss it openly. If your partner doesn’t want to go there, and you do, this is the kind of confl ict that is sometimes good reason to move on. One of the nice things about being gay is that we often maintain friendships with ex-lovers, so you don’t have to give up the person just because you have given up the sex. The village is no longer as central to gay life – people Harris provincial government, rules were changed to allow for are free to move out to other areas because of the evolution vacancy de-control. City council repeatedly asked the province and acceptance of society as a whole. Alberta is a province that had to be dragged kicking and screaming into accepting gay rights, who threatened to try to opt out of gay marriage. Same-sex couples still may not feel safe walking hand-in-hand in our cities. We live in an economic situation where there is no low cost housing or commercial properties because they’ve been sold out to make more condos. Then in our own queer community, people play king of the hill, saying “you better obey what I say or you ain’t part of my group”. I don’t know, I see progress, yet we need more. A gay business association would be a start. We may not have a physical village, but damn it, why can’t we harness that mythic Alberta maverick ornery spirit and put Toronto to shame - instead of being known as Texas North? I don’t have the answers, and god knows I’ve done my share of being self- ish at times – however, I do know in some ways we are falling behind. Maybe getting everyone holding hands and singing “Kumbaya” is a simplistic approach. But doesn’t it make a bet- ter solution than bitching and fi ghting, and wouldn’t it provide a better, lasting gay heritage for our own cities?

Jayson is one such comic that is celebrating 25 years of misadventures. The brain child of Jeff Krell, who began the comic in 1983, has made appearances in Philadelphia Gay News, Gay Comix, and Meatmen with the syndicated strip. The characters that colour this world are Jayson and his loyal best female friend Arena Stage, the cross dressing queen Robyn Ricketts, and Jayson’s previously puritan mother Ber- tha – she breaks with the norm and vehemently defends her son’s sexual orientation, with the point of a pitch fork in some cases. While relying on stereotypes works for the comic within these four characters, it grows tiresome as the story expands to other characters in the Jayson universe: a washed up clos- eted gay movie star, sperm hungry lesbian power lawyer, and religious fanatic farmers. Jayson has its moments and provides the intended light- hearted fl uff with a queer theme. The largely non-political strip does handle some interesting issues: skimming the surface of the gay porn industry, closet fame, self hating gay justifi cations, gender variance and parental motivations. Jay- son exposes the serious issues that surround queer life and sensibility without delving in to the heavier issues. Dear Editor, A Nurse Practitioner just came by to visit her mom who sits next to me in my offi ce. She was the NP that fi rst gave life to my little boy, Andrew and whom we got to know quite well during our stay in the NICU. She was with us when Andrew passed away. We were talking about my fundraising and the chairs we’re going to get for the unit. I mentioned that I will be at the hospital selling my pom poms on the 31st. She asked if I was going to be dressed up and I said yes. (Up until now, she re- ally had no idea I was “Marni” the Empress) She laughed and said one day, she was walking a colleague’s offi ce and noticed a magazine on her desk. She fl ipped through the pages not really getting why such a magazine would be in the NICU. She phoned her colleague to tease her to which she replied, “Take another look.” When she got to the story about me it all clicked. She thought it was great! I don’t know how the magazine got there but I thought you would really appreciate knowing that these articles get noticed even way outside of the community. I can’t thank you enough again for all of your efforts in supporting my reign and my fundraising efforts.

The very last track, “I Decided, Pt. 2” is a catchy dance remix of the somewhat bland “I Decided, Pt. 1”. I would say this track is my favorite, but that would be cheat- ing. So next best for me was “Sandcastle Disco”, which prob- ably has the widest appeal. “Dancing in the Dark” was also kind of fun and upbeat, and “Cosmic Journey” had a certain psychedelic appeal, taking a strange but exciting turn in the second half of the song. Solange makes great music for a relaxed evening, but how about a little more energy… “GlobalGroove: Live 4” by DJ Scotty K. If club music is more your thing, you’ve probably skipped right to this review anyway. Centaur Music is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to getting your fi x of dance groove, and this is the fourth CD in their Live series. This time they’ve enlisted the talent of DJ Scotty K., whose claim to fame is being the original DJ on the Ellen Degeneres show. “I was thrilled and excited when I was asked to work on a compilation for Centaur,” says Scotty K. “I make it a goal to provide music that makes people feel elevated and makes them feel happy to be alive. I wanted to keep the entire feel of the CD fun, fresh and familiar while putting my own signature sound and mark on it.” I found that the CD got off to an awesome start with some great melodic dance pieces like “Falling For You” and “Cry For You”. I also really liked DJ Scotty K’s remake of Linkin Park’s mega hit “Shadow Of The Day” – all wonderful rhythms with just the right amount of instrumentation to keep an uplifting mood. But shortly afterward, it slipped into the type of hardcore groove that I’m not particularly fond of – yes, it may keep your body moving to the beat, but it seems to numb your mind. The vocals are backed only by minimalistic counterpoints, leaving a somewhat barren sound. For instance, I was excited to see there was a remix of “I Kissed A Girl” (a song I quite like) but discovered that DJ Scotty K tore out the melody, slowed the tempo, and all that was left were Katy Perry’s time-stretched lyrics set to the same monotonous rhythm as the last song. What a shame. My conclusion: the Album is perfect if you want to lose yourself, but not so great if you like to express yourself.

She’s moved on to also become this city’s Heir Apparent, which is our connection to San Diego through the international Court system. …So that’s a big honour. Plus we also have Wolfgang who is a member of Parliament, and his job is to review and revise the whole system in itself, and he’s an excellent person for this job.” The ISCCA has a large component of fundraising nights that occur on a weekly or monthly basis. They host special shows every 3rd Sunday of the month at the Calgary Eagle, and every 2nd Saturday at Money Pennies; they sell shooters on Tuesdays and Saturdays at the Texas Lounge, and every 2nd Friday at the Calgary Eagle alongside of coat check. Their regular Barbecue fundraisers have now ended due to the change in season – although this is their mainstay at Backlot, Chilton says they hope to have something new at Backlot around Christmas time. Some upcoming special events include a Sunday show during World Aids Day weekend, a Crowns for Kids show at the beginning of December, and a booth sponsored by GayCalgary and Edmonton Magazine at the Taboo Exhibition and Sex Show (in Calgary from Novem- ber 14th to 16th). “I’m out of town in Regina for their investitures, but Michael will be [at Taboo]. We’re selling [teddy bears] and also Court pins as a fundraiser. The bears are coming with me to Regina as well.” Esbeth adds that the teddy bears are selling for $15 each, toward charity of course. Esbeth left us with some fi nal thoughts. “I really thank the community for their support, and GayCalgary and Edmonton Magazine for all the things they do for us above and beyond the call of duty. At the end of the day, without the support of the community and the city – everybody that’s involved – this organization is only a name.” The Imperial Sovereign Court of the Chinook Arch www.iscca.ca
