As you may already know, after being notified by the Diocese regarding a pending School closure, our Board was granted a 2-month extension on the Diocese’s decision for closure. Everyone was encouraged by this extension on the decision, hoping that our combined efforts would be successful and allow the School’s continued operation. Furniture History Talk Contributing Article by Fenton History Center Come hear about an important part of our area’s history during the lunch hour on Wednesday July 11 beginning at noon. Fenton Trustee and local historian Clarence Carlson will talk about the evolution of the Swedish Furniture Co., started in 1883, that eventually became Crawford Furniture. The talk features images, stories and more about the once bustling local furniture industry. Carlson says,” My interest started with my dad. He was a cabinet maker in Jamestown from about 1929 to 1959. I was interested in the factories he worked at; Maddox, Crawford’s and Union National. After reading a little about them I wanted to know more about the manufacturing of fine furniture in Jamestown.” The lecture will be in the education room of the Fenton History Center, 67 Washington St., just south of the Washington St. Bridge on Route 60. The lecture is free, but donations are welcome. The series continues the 2nd Wednesday of each month through October. The next topic on August 8 is about the War of 1812 and its affect on Western New York. Steve Johnson will talk about the military uniforms and equipment of the time. The Park surrounds the 1863 Fenton Mansion and the historic Hall House next door. Old time crafters, food vendors and craft vendors are needed to show the skills involved in woodworking, leatherworking, quilting, weaving, handcrafts and more. The theme this year is the theaters of Jamestown. The theaters were numerous from the later 1800s up until the 1920s when all but four remained. The current Reg Lenna Civic Center and Little Theater are all that remain today. “We would like to feature vaudeville type performances during the day. We know dog acts, dancing, magic acts and juggling are part of our stage tradition. Anyone interested in volunteering their talents can call me at the Fenton History Center,” says Joni Blackman, director. The festival is free to the public. Crafters are encouraged to sell their creations. For more information call the Fenton History Center at 664-6256. Page 16 • www.JamestownGazette.com Jamestown Gazette July 9, 2012 HOW DID I GET HERE?
