Trachtenberg, Henri, "Sport Olympiques & Scoutisme Catalogue". Paris: compiler, 1971 edition, 77 pp. ($2.00 plus postage). The 1971 edition of Henri Trachtenberg's "Catalogue of Sports, Olympics, and Scouts" has just reached the reviewer. New issues since the last edition (1968-69) have forced a twelve per cent increase in the number of pages; the size remains 5 l/2" x 8 1/4". The heavy cov er will stand a lot of wear (and it will get it with my copy!). Essentially a price-list, Trachtenberg's catalogue is a gold mine of information for the sports collector. The contents are two-fold: 1. Olympic Games (1896-1968)(by Olympiad, then by country)—gives the year, country, Yvert catalogue number, and price in French francs. 2. Sports and scout (by country)—gives the year, Trachtenberg chack-list number, Yvert catalogue number, description, quantity is sued, and price in French francs. Particularly valuable is the listing of immerforate stamps and souve nir sheets, especially for France and former French colonies remaining under French influence. Imperforate items not identified in other sources also appear from time to time. The preparation in French and the use of Yvert catalogue numbers do not offer severe handicaps., A small French dictionary will solve the first problem and Yvert catalogue numbers offer another identify ing system for sports stamps, especially for those who correspond with sports collectors in France and southern Europe. Although designed as a price-list (and Trachtenberg is a good supplier, especially of the more exotic essays, proofs, deluxe sheets, imperforates, etc.), his publication is a valuable and up-to-date re ference for sports collectors. I recommend it highly.

I must apologize to those of you who have had to wait for replies to your let ters. I have been facing tremendous per sonal problems since my return from Mexico. Things are beginning to straighten out, and I will do my best to catch up soon. Helen Long has been able to take over some of my mail, Bless her, and my thanks to all of you for bearing with me. In case you haven't seen it, this is the souvenir sheet which was issued by Mex ico for SPORTMEX. This is the first time the SPI emblem has been shown on a legiti Barbara T? Williams mate postal issue. The designer, Gregorio Gutierrez Balderas, is a young man, with a lovely wife and daughter Nina. I tried to bring Nina home with me, but Mexican hos EXPOSICION pitality doesn't stretch that far. (Each FI1F FILATELICO sheet has a serial number on the bottom DEPORTIVA which is not shown on the illustration. Al $2 MEXICO AEREO so see 'News Of Our Members' column, ed) I spent a good deal of time with him, as well as two other Mexican designers, Lance Wyman and Sr. Rodriques. Lance Wyman is the American from New York, who has liv ed in Mexico City for some years. Sr. Rodriques has two designs being issued soon. I saw the designs, and they are lovely. I first met him in San Diego, at SANDIPEX, when he was in charge of the display sent up by the Mexican government. The story behind some of the late stamp designs would fill a book, and is a fascinating one. Lance Wyman was able to show me the Olympic designs which were turned down, as well as the original sketches for those which were used. Some of these will soon be on sale here in the United States. Any of you who are inter ested might drop me a line, and I will see that you are notified of the sale.

In the July 28, 1970 Issue of Western Stamp Collector, there were several comments questioning the Inclusion of certain countries in our New Issue column by Barb Williams. The article stated that the stamps of Cuba are banned in the United States. True, but we have many members in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Great Britain, Spain, the Philippines Islands, and a number of other countries. It is only fair that we report these emissions as they are not banned in most other areas of the world where our members reside. There is also a second consideration. The political winds are always changing and someday the U. S. and Cuba will resume diplo matic and trade relations and these stamps will no longer be banned. Although I'm not old enough to remember the situation during World War II, I'm sure philatelists were not allowed to import stamps of Germany, Italy and Japan. Of course, everyone knows that the postal emissions from these countries during World War II are now recognized by the catalogs and are collectable items today. Someday the same may be said of Cuba. The comments also stated that we list the stamps of Para guay and Panama which never fail to make the "Black Blot" listings. This is also true and there is really nothing good to say about the philatelic status of these countries. These issues are listed solely for one reason and that is to let our members know that they do exist. To sum up, we feel that our members have the right to know of every sport issue and should have the right to make their own choice of which to Include in their collections. As this Journal supports the "Black Blot" program of the American Philatelic Society, we shall resume the "Black Blot" listings of the American Philatelist. We shall endeavor to give the status of various issues as the infor mation becomes available for the benefit of our members.
