A MESSAGE FROM MSGR. BOB

Jesus certainly depicts the dark side of human nature in today’s Gospel passage from Mark. Listening to the lita- ny of evils he mentions is disturbing enough and yet we see them being lived out in our society day after day. In this age of liberalism and permissiveness, we see choices that are leading people to personal and familial destruc- tion. These were not only issues for the people during the time when Jesus walked this earth. They continue to be evils that surround us everyday. He begins by referring to evil thoughts . We can all be guilty of that at times as we wish ill on someone else. The root may be jealousy or hurt or anger, but it is not an appropriate way for us to relate to one another, even for what we might consider an appropriate reason. He mentions unchastity . First of all, the word chaste is hardly ever mentioned these days. We have this attitude that we can do whatever we want with our bodies which often times leads us to deeper issues with which we have to deal. Chastity calls us to a respect for ourselves in the way we dress, speak and present ourselves to others. Theft and murder are com- monplace news items these days. It is amazing how many cities actually report the number of robberies and mur- ders that take place in their community every day! Adultery is also very commonplace in our society! Again, the permissiveness with which we live and make our decisions leads to so much hurt and damage to ourselves, to our families and to others. There are actually websites where a person can go and find someone who wants to have an affair! We cannot help but see greed in our materialistic and secularistic society. Jealousy is a real issue for many of us. It is easy to resent the good fortune and blessings of others that we feel we deserve more than the one who has them. Lying has also become an acceptable way of relating to one another. We tend to decide what we want people to believe, be it the truth or not. We can live in a world of deceit , but what does that say about our character? Licentiousness is a word we rarely hear in today’s conversations. It refers to a person who disre- gards the accepted rules and standards and is morally unrestrained in their behavior and morals. Do you know anyone who might fit that description? The list continues as Jesus encourages us to take a more honest look at ourselves and our behaviors and choices. We can make change for the good with his grace and help. Saint James encourages us to not simply listen to the message of Jesus but to make it a part of our lives. In doing so we will have all the hope, peace, love and happiness we need to be fulfilled. He writes: “All good giving and every per- fect gift is from above coming from the Father of lights.” Why live in the darkness of the perversion Jesus refers to which is darkness when we can live in the light of all that is right and good?

Thanks to the Knights of Columbus for another wonderful afternoon of fellowship and community as we gathered for the annual parish picnic. It is a lot of planning and work for these dedicated men to provide this event for us. We are truly blessed in the good works of our Knights here at Saint Rose!

From all indications, the school year is off to a good start! May the year be a blessed and safe one for all of our school communities.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at our annual Labor Day parade. This parade is one of the highlights of our community. Congratulations to Eunice, this year’s parade marshal. Eunice is a most generous friend to our parish for which we are always most grateful.

A PRAYER FOR LABOR DAY

LORD, ON THIS LABOR DAY, WE THANK YOU FOR THE BLESSING OF BEING ABLE TO WORK. WE ASK FOR THE STRENGTH WE NEED EACH DAY TO COMPLETE OUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES. WE ASK YOU TO GRANT US REST WHEN WE GROW TIRED AND PA- TIENCE WHEN WE GROW FRUSTRATED AND WEARY. WE ASK YOUR GUIDANCE FOR THOSE WHO ARE SEEKING EMPLOYMENT AND HOPE FOR THOSE NOT ABLE TO WORK. WE ASK YOU TO BLESS THE MANY UNSEEN FACES OF THOSE WHO WORK TO PROVIDE SO MUCH FOR EACH OF US. ABOVE ALL, WE ASK THAT YOU NEVER ALLOW US TO TAKE FOR GRANT- ED THE MANY BLESSINGS YOU POUR OUT ON US EACH DAY AS A RESULT OF OUR LABOR AND HARD WORK. BLESS US AND KEEP US EVER SAFE IN YOUR CARE AND LOVE. AMEN.
