First edition. xiv, 547; xvi, 540 pp.The complete account of one of the most famous (and infamous) African voyages of the nineteenth century. “The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1886 to 1889 was one of the last major European expeditions into the interior $175 of Africa in the nineteenth century, ostensibly to the relief of Emin Pasha, General Charles Gordon’s besieged governor of Equatoria, threatened by Mahdist forces. Led by Henry Morton Stanley, the expedition came to be both celebrated, for its ambition in crossing “darkest Africa”, and notorious, for the bloodshed and death left in its wake.” Very good. All three maps included in pockets. Boards a bit rubbed with two small bits of paper transfer on front board of second volume. 2. A Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States; Its Causes, Character, Conduct, and Results. Presented in a Series of Colloquies at Liberty Hall., in Two Volumes National Publishing Company, 1868. First edition. 654, [4]; xii, 827, [4] pp. 8vo. Leather spine & corners, black morocco spine labels, gilt titles, rules, & decorations, marbled boards & endpapers. Includes engraved portraits. $400 A contemporary account of the American Civil War, originally presented as a series of colloquies at Liberty Hall by the former vice president of the Confederate States of America, published in book form 1868-1870. Howes S-938: ‘Most elaborate—and best—argument for the constitutional validity of the doctrine of state sovereignty and the right of secession.’ Near fine. Boards a bit rubbed, but overall an excellent example of a notoriously fragile set. Hinges holding strongly. 4. Oxford University Press, New York, 1941. 1946 3rd printing. xxxi, 559 pp. 8vo. A guide to West Virginia covering ‘agriculture, geology, history, industries, cultural background of the State... [with] a section which takes up each city and follows with full information about tours. There are many maps, a general information section which deals with railroads, highways, bus and air lines, traffic regulations, accommodations, climate, fishing and hunting laws, sports events, recreation areas and a calendar of events. Sixty- $75 four pages of gravure illustrations...’ Very good in good jacket. Map included in rear pocket. 2 inch chip from jacket spine head, a few smaller chips from rear edges, flap price clipped. 4

A photographic tour of earlier twentieth century Rochester, with a brief $45 ‘biography’ of the city and its preceding the images. Features views of Genesee Falls, the New York Central and Hudson River Railway Station, Erie Canal and Aqueduct, Powers’ Hotel, the Frederick Douglass Monument, various municipal buildings, streets, and bridges, Genesee Valley Park, Seneca Park, and Ontario Beach. Quite scarce - at the time our copy was cataloged, we located none in the trade, and only five copies in institutional holdings. Good. Wrappers foxed, pages unaffected. 7. [Biography; Signed] Marie, Grand Duchess of Russia; Lord, Russell A Princess in Exile New York: The Viking Press, 1932. First edition. xii, 306 pp. 8vo. Photographs throughout. An autobiography by the Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia, who generally went by Marie (the French version of her name). It was published as a companion volume to Education of a Princess, and describes her life after the Bolsheviks $45 seized power and she was exiled. Very good. Signed by author without inscription on half-title page. Spine faded, front & end matter faintly foxed.

Photographic frontispiece and plates. A biography of the Native American who was an outdoorswoman and environmental activist, and served as a sniper for the Canadian armed forces. Very good. 17. [Juvenile] Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs David McKay Company / Walt Disney Enterprises, 1937. Unpaginated. Walt Disney’s classic tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This book was released the same year as the famous animated film, and includes numerous scenes, many reproduced in color. Snow White broke new ground in the world of motion pictures: it was the first full-length feature film to use cel animation, and the first installment in Disney’s Animated Classics series. Its overwhelming success quickly led to the production of Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi. Snow White was $75 named the greatest animated film of all time in 2008 by the American Film Institute. Very good. Edges a bit rubbed, pencil name on front endpaper. 18. [Juvenile] Baum, L. [Literature & Fiction] Christie, Agatha And Then There Were None Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1940. Reissue. 264 pp. 8vo. Christie’s most popular novel, and the best-selling mystery of all time, which also inspired a motion picture adaptation. This edition released 1 year after the original British publication in 1939, and the same year as Dodd, Mead’s U.S. edition. Very good. Ink name on front endpaper, jacket edges rubbed with minor $50 loss from corners, minor loss from fore-edge of last few pages (margin only). 33. [Literature & Fiction] Davies, Valentine Miracle on 34th Street Harcourt Brace & Company, New York, 1947. First edition. 120 pp. 7 5/8 x 5 1/4. Davies first wrote the story, which was first adapted into a screenplay for Twentieth Century Fox by George Seaton. This book was released in conjunction with the motion picture release on May 2, 1947. The original starred Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Natalie Wood, $125 and Edmund Gwenn. The movie was remade four times, most recently in 1994, and also adapted for television and theatre. Good. Jacket flaps affixed to endpapers, 1/2 inch internal surface tear to jacket spine, jacket edges trimmed, hinges just starting ink stamp & bookplate remnant on front endpapers. 9

A collection of previously published Sherlock Holmes stories. Originally published with seven stories, later editions (like the one offered here), include eight stories (The Adventure of the Cardboard Box was added). Good. Spine faded, ink name & owner bookplate on front endpapers, binding weakening at one point after first gathering. 35. [Literature & Fiction] Fielding, A. [Feilding, Dorothy] $30 The Case of the Missing Diary [A Chief Inspector Pointer Mystery] H.C. Kinsey & Company, Inc., New York, 1936. First edition. 252 pp. 8vo. A mystery written pseudonymously under the name ‘A. Fielding’. The author’s real name was Dorothy Feilding, though beyond that nothing is known of her identity, despite many attempts to trace her lineage. She wrote a total of 27 mysteries featuring Chief Inspector Pointer, which were quite popular during her lifetime. ‘Charles Dawnay $45 was a devoted husband, a loving father, and an honest and successful man of business. His one quirk, if it could be called that, was that he kept a meticulous diary in which he noted every appointment and encounter both past and future. Therefore, when his body was found with its head bashed in, the police had every hope that the diary might provide a clue as to who the last person to see him alive might be, as that person might well prove to be the murderer. However, when the diary is examined, it proves to be written in an indecipherable code. When Chief Inspector Pointer is called in to handle the case, he quickly determines that the diary found on the body is not the one kept by the murdered man, but a substitute. The search is on for the real diary, for only its recovery will allow Pointer to solve... The Case of the Missing Diary.’ Very good. The third mystery featuring detective Michael Shayne, written by Davis Dresser under the pseudonym Brett Halliday. The Shayne series was originally created in 1939 with the publication of Dividend on Death, and inspired a series of films, as well as radio and television series. We found only one record of sale at auction in 2012, and six copies recorded in institutional holdings. Near fine. Binding very slightly shaken, boards faintly rubbed, $375 minor bookplate remnant on front endpaper. 37. [Literature & Fiction] Hawkins, Paula The Girl on the Train Riverhead Books / Inc., New York, 2015. First edition. 323 pp. 8vo. Author’s first book. ‘A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people’s lives. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. The famous satirical novel set during World War II, which inspired a film of the same name in 1970. Following the exploits of Captain John Yossarian, a B-25 bombardier in the U.S. Air Force, Heller’s novel cleverly exposes the absurdities of war. 10

The success of the book contributed to the addition of the title the modern lexicon as a synonym for a logical double-bind, a device Heller employs throughout. Very good. A modern edition of Joyce’s stream-of-consciousness masterpiece, which was at the center of an important court case regarding literary censorship in the early twentieth century, and remains controversial for what some consider obscene content. Includes introduction, select bibliography, chronology, note on the text, and two appendices. Near fine. Ink name on front endpaper, bound-in ribbon slightly frayed at end. $25 40.
