L OURENÇO Abstract: A synopsis of the fossil scorpions found in amber, from the Lower Cretaceous to the Miocene, is presented. Scorpion remains are rare among the arthropods found trapped in amber. Only five specimens are known from Cretaceous amber, repre- senting four different taxa, whereas eleven specimens have been recorded from Baltic amber, representing nine genera and ten species. A few, much younger, fossils have also been described from Dominican and Mexican ambers. Key words: Cretaceous, Paleocene, Miocene, Scorpiones. Taxonomy and distribution data of species are reviewed based on scientific literature until August 2008. We report the presence of 48 valid species in the area, belonging to four families and 16 genera. Examined material of nine buthid species collected from Egypt (including the Sinai Peninsula) and Libya is recorded. The current knowledge on taxonomy, chorotypic status, and origins of species, complexes, and genera in relation to their biogeography and phylogeny is also discussed. Key words: Scorpion taxonomy, E-Mediterranean chorotype, Buthidae, Euscorpiidae, Iuridae, Scorpionidae INTRODUCTION The scorpiofauna of the Eastern Mediterranean area has long ago attracted the inter- est of scorpiologists worldwide in terms of taxonomy and biogeography, due to the diversiform morphological characters and the high venom toxicity of several genera. The number of publications dealing with the systematics of scorpions of the Eastern Mediterranean since Linnaeus (1758), Amoreux (1789), and Herbst (1800) amounts to several hundred. -

80 Jordan Journal of Natural History Invertebrate Fauna of Wadi Al-Quff Protected Area, Palestine Mazin Qumsiyeh Palestine Museum of Natural History and Palestine Institute of Biodiversity and Sustainability, Bethlehem University ABSTRACT We report results of a preliminary survey of the invertebrate fauna of Wadi Al-Quff area (occupied Palestine). We recorded 23 species of butterflies in 5 families. Moths were a difficult group to classify but we have at least 45 species. Dragon flies and damsel flies were noted in the Wadi Hasaka area. Four mantids in three families, two species of stick insects, one earwig species (Dermeptera) and at least seven species of Orthoptera were noted. There were at least 13 species of Hemiptera (true bugs) and 5 species of Neuroptera (netwing insects). We noted at least 13 species in ten families of the Order Diptera (the flies). We also collected/observed at least 17 species of Hymenoptera in eight families. In the Order Blattoidae (roaches), we noted two species only but the Order Coleoptera (Beetles) was very richly represented with at least 23 species in 10 families. Among parasitic arthropods we collected two species of fleas and three species of ticks (Ixodidae), one of the latter involved in transmittal of spotted fever. Five species of scorpions were noted, the largest being the Jericho or Mt. Nebo scorpion Nebo hierichonticus and the smallest being the brown scorpion Compsubuthus werneri. Two species of pseudoscorpions and two species of camel spiders were collected. A more difficult group was the regular spiders (Araneae) and we noted over two dozen species in at least 8 families. -

GRAHAM Department of Biological Sciences, Marshall University Huntington, West Virginia 25755-2510, USA email: [email protected] Summary Being lungless, plethodontid salamanders respire through their skin and are especially sensitive to environmental disturbances. Habitat fragmentation, low abundance, extreme habitat requirements, and a narrow distribution of less than 70 miles in length, makes one such salamander, Plethodon punctatus, a species of concern (S1) in West Virginia. To better understand this sensitive species, day and night survey hikes were conducted through ideal habitat and coordinate data as well as tail tips (10 to 20 mm in length) were collected. DNA was extracted from the tail tips and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene fragments. Maximum parsimony, neighbor-joining, and UPGMA algorithms were used to produce phylogenetic haplotype trees, rooted with P. wehrlei. Based on our DNA sequence data, four disparate management units are designated. Surveys revealed new records on Jack Mountain, a disjunct population that expands the known distribution of the species 10 miles west. In addition, surveys by Flint verified a population on Nathaniel Mountain, WV and revealed new records on Elliot Knob, extending the known range several miles south. -

Included in our review is discussion of the many contributing factors that may cause error in epide- miological estimations and in the determination of medically significant scorpion species, and we provide suggestions for future scorpion research that will aid in overcoming these errors. 1. SINCE 1870 there has been no detailed work on the de- velopment of the Scorpion. As it seemed likely that with modern methods of section-cutting and the great advance which has been made of late years in the field of embryology, a renewed examination might yield interesting results, I have, at Professor Lankester's suggestion, examined and cut sections of a large number of embryos of Euscorpius italicus preserved for him by the Zoological Station at Naples. I have also examined- a number of embryos of Scorpio (Buthus) fulvipes preserved and sent over from Madras by Professor Bourne. These, however, chiefly owing to the small amount of food-yolk, show such a great difference from E. italicus in their mode of development that it seems better to postpone the description of them to a future paper. The Scorpion is interesting not only as being the lowest, and, as far as we know, the oldest type of air-breathing Arachnid, but also as being exceptional among Arthropods in that the whole development takes place within the body of the female— in the ovarian tubes. The only other instances of this with which I am acquainted are Phrynus, which is also viviparous, VOL. XXXI,. PART II. NEW SER. H 106 MALCOLM LAURIE. and Sphoerogyna ventricosa, one of the A.carina in which the young are born sexually mature. The Scorpion Tityus Macrurus Koch, 1845, Was Described on the Basis of One Male an D One Female from Mexico

RESEARCH NOTE THE IDENTITY OF TITYUS MA CR UR US KOCH (ARACHNIDA, SCORPIONIDA, BUTHIDAE ) The scorpion Tityus macrurus Koch, 1845, was described on the basis of one male an d one female from Mexico . At the time this species was described the genus Tityus Koch was poorly characterized, and Koch assigned numerous species to it . Since then, the genus Tityus has been restricted to species found only in South America and southern Centra l America, and T. macrurus has been assigned to the genus Centruroides Marx, foun d mostly in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean islands . The position of the species within this genus, however, has not been clear . While T:horell (1876) indicate d that T. macrurus is a junior synonym of Centrurus biaculeatus (Lucas) [=Centruroides gracilis (Latreille)] and Kraepelin (1899) listed the species as a synonym of C. gracilis, Pocock (1902), Hoffmann (1932), Moreno (1939), and Mello-Leit "o (1945) referred T macrurus to the synonymy of Centruroides margaritatus (Gervais) . Both C. gracilis and C. margaritatus occur in Mexico, and since the placement of T. macrurus within the genu s Centruroides is uncertain, we examined the male type of T. macrurus to determine its identity. The type of Tityus macrurus is definitely a species of the genus Centruroides and is very closely related to the species occurring in coastal Veracruz described and identified by Hoffmann (1932) as C. gracilis. However, as pointed out by one of us (Wagner, 1977), the name Centruroides gracilis is currently applied to a poorly understood complex of species and subspecies from a wide geographic area (Florida and Texas in the USA , Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean Islands, and northern South America to Ecua- dor). -

Craig P.o. Box 545 Monte Rio, CA95462, USA SYNOPSIS A new specimen of Palaeoburmesebuthus grimaldii Lourenco, 2002, recently described from Cretaceous (Albian) Burmite, is reported. This is more complete than the holotype consisting of five scattered, unequal parts: a complete metasoma with an attached partial mesosoma bearing a visible stigma, a right pedipalp chela and three leg fragments. Comparisons to extinct and extant lineages of scorpions are made, although the partially observable trichobothrial pattern of the pedi palp chela precludes definitive family placement. The relative position of the fragments and the severe damage they have suffered imply that it was dismembered by a predator and provides the oldest evidence of scorpions being preyed upon by other animals. Extraordinary karyotype variation has been observed particularly in the family Buthidae, which is unique among scorpions for its holokinetic chromosomes. We analyzed the karyotypes of four geographically distant species of the genus Androctonus Ehrenberg, 1828 (Androctonus australis, Androctonus bourdoni, Androctonus crassicauda, Androctonus maelfaiti) (Scorpiones: Buthidae) using both classic and molecu- lar cytogenetic methods. The mitotic complement of all species consisted of 2n = 24 elements. Fluorescence in situ hybridization with a fragment of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene, a cytogenetic marker well known for its mobility, identified a single interstitial rDNA locus on the largest chromosome pair in all species examined. Our findings thus support the evolutionary stasis of the Androctonus karyotype, which is discussed with respect to current hypotheses on chromosome evolution both within and beyond the family Buthidae.
