2017 DAYTONA 500 ON FOX PRODUCTION ELEMENTS

DIGITAL CAR CHANNELS FOX Sports provides channels dedicated to specific cars throughout Daytona Speedweeks. Each “Car Channel” contains advanced data, a dedicated in-car camera with unedited team communications audio and multiple camera angles along with dedicated cameras in the pits. These channels stream on FOX Sports GO and will be utilized at times during the broadcast on FOX. The Car Channels debut during The Clash at Daytona on Saturday, Feb. 18, featuring seven-time and defending NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series champion and former champion .

TOUCHSCREEN CUTAWAY CAR FOX Sports has enhanced its 3D-cutaway car, putting these graphics in the hands of the broadcast team. In addition to a touchscreen in the Hollywood Hotel, this year FOX NASCAR analyst Larry McReynolds has his own dedicated touchscreen inside the booth, allowing for immediate access to enhance any technical story, giving the viewer clear illustrative explanations.

VIRTUAL GRAPHICS Camera-tracking technologies from Stype provide FOX Sports the ability to place 3D-graphics in the real environment by combining with VIZRT for the graphic rendering. For example, specialty graphics including virtual leaderboards, sponsor enhancements and race summaries, are placed on Turn 3 as giant virtual billboards.

MORE SUPER MOTION AND HIGHER FRAME RATES High- cameras are placed in strategic areas to replay the action in super slow motion.  FOX Sports uses more super-motion and high-resolution cameras than ever before in a Daytona 500, including: o Next generation high-frame-rate 4k cameras; with these cameras, FOX can break down a wreck in multiple ways using a single camera shot, including zooming into the car that caused the wreck, the car that got caught up in it and the one that got away.  Gopher Cam returns for its ninth season of NASCAR, now with a new lens and new positions including directly in harm’s way right in the middle of the track as the full lineup of cars drive over it.

GOPHER CAM – A CAMERA IN THE TRACK FOX’s Gopher Cam is a tiny high-definition point-of-view camera buried underneath the asphalt track surface. The cameras have been paired with high-quality condenser microphones for an unbelievably realistic audio/video experience. Advances in lens quality and materials enable FOX to provide a much wider and clearer field of view. For Daytona, there are three cameras placed in harm’s way, including one in Turn 4 and another on the backstretch, positioned so cars run the cameras over at more than 200 mph.

8

HAT CAM and PIT WALK Viewers can go for a pre-race walk with two-time Daytona 500 winner and FOX NASCAR analyst down pit row – seeing what Michael sees with the RF hat camera.

CRANK IT UP! As always, FOX Sports gives viewers a chance to truly test the ability of their home stereo system with its hugely popular “CRANK IT UP” segment, in which FOX Sports Emmy-winning audio team allows viewers to listen to the action on the track as if they were there.

During the 59th running of the Daytona 500 on FOX, look out for the “CRANK IT UP” channel on FOX Sports GO.

EQUIPMENT BREAKDOWN FOX Sports employs seven main mobile production units in the multi-network television compound at Daytona International Speedway. In addition, the network’s coverage from Speedweeks requires two satellite uplinks and a set of mobile generators that provide nearly two megawatts of power independent of the local power source. This command center directs the following arsenal of production equipment:

 20 manned cameras  3 in-track ground cameras  2 High Frame Rate 4K Cameras  2 Xmo cameras located at the end of pit road and the start/finish line  4 Super Slow Motion Cameras  10 Robotic Cameras around the ring  3 robotic Hollywood Hotel cameras  Jib camera with Augmented Reality Enhancement  8 in-car camera packages, each featuring three different camera angles  4 wireless roving pit/garage camera crews  2 in-car Gyro-Cams  Massive amount of digital replay devices and a rolling archive of past races  43 race team communication radios, one for each car on the track  More than 150 microphones placed along the track and throughout Daytona International Speedway  Racing Radios edit unit – deployed to get the most radio chatter on the air as possible.  The iconic Hollywood Hotel mobile studio

The 2016-17 season is highlighted by the debut of Formula E in New York -- racing in Brooklyn on a 13-corner, 1.21-mile track on the shores of New York Harbour at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. The race -- the first FIA-sanctioned open-wheel race to take place within the five boroughs of New York City in modern history -- runs through Red Hook and will be called the New York City ePrix, a doubleheader over two days in July.
