◌ The Paris Opera Ballet School ◌

Located near Nanterre’s André Malraux Park, not far from the underground rail line linking it to the Palais Garnier, the Ballet School was conceived in order to reproduce spatially the different times in children’s day. Three building wings connected by walkways stand aside one another on a vast parcel of land bordered on one side by the town and nature on the other: the dance building, the general education and administrative wing, and the hall of residence.

Facing the park, in the dance wing, a large spiral staircase provides access to the studios via a panoramic promenade punctuated by landings where students can gather. From the entrance, a covered gallery leads to the general education wing where elementary and high-school level classes take place. The residential wing is linked to the other buildings by a glass arcade channelling the students’ movements © Agathe Poupeney / ONP throughout the day.

The rooms have been designed for three students. Each student has a window view and a bed-cabinet-desk unit separated by a low partition. The windows look out on the distant city to dissociate the dance activities of the day from the evenings which are set aside for rest and relaxation. Finally, the courtyard and garden surrounds the entire building. Here, the children can relax. © Agathe Poupeney / ONP

◌ The Summer School ◌

Created in 2013 on the occasion of the Tercentenary of the School, the Summer School of the Paris Opera Ballet School offers the unique opportunity to young pre-professional dancers to enjoy the specificities of the “French Style”. On this event, Elisabeth Platel, Director of the School since 2004, makes her teachers available to students from around the world.

For the first edition, the Summer School housed 206 students during the ten days of the programme, 127 of them were non-French. In 2015, 274 students took part in the adventure for one or two weeks.

Here are some feedbacks from some of our former Summer school students:

“Congratulations and thank you for your pedagogy, and for your open-mindedness, as we perceived it: it was a cocktail of application, elegance and tenderness” – Parents of Margot, 11 years old.

“The organisation was perfect and everybody was very professional. I learnt a lot and met a lot of nice people. I would recommend it to everyone who wishes to become a ” – Amphitrite, 13 years old.

“I was impressed by the quality of the presentation. There is high level, highly professional work, as well as benevolent and thorough consideration from the teachers. The way they address their students in class convey passion, will and enjoyment to hand down their knowledge” – Mother of Alicia, 12 years old .

“Balance is the best word I can use to describe all the aspects of this programme. All the teachers were wise in sharing their knowledge with us and yet treating us with individual care and pushing us to see results as if we were their own full year students. (…) the insight shared in partnering class was irreplaceable. (…) Non dance related, everyone involved was friendly, welcoming and truly helpful. The facility is gorgeous and the students are privileged to a campus like that. The food was really healthy and tasty. When admitted to an environment like that, there is an unspoken energy. The mood brought out the best in the students.” – Colin, 19.

Elisabeth Platel started dancing at the conservatoire of St Germain-en-Laye then followed Christiane Vaussard ’s class at the National Conservatoire of Paris. Her National Conservatoire first Prize in 1975 granted her the admission to the Paris Opera Ballet School. Hired in the in 1976, and then promoted to “ Première danseuse ” in 1979, she was finally nominated “ Danseuse Etoile ” at the end of her first Giselle on December 23, 1981. Until 1999, her farewell in the Sylphide, she is the of all great classical choreographers including George Balanchine, and especially for whom she created numerous productions. She has been awarded the Prix Benois de la danse for her lifelong achievements and in particular for her role as ambassador of the French school throughout the world. Whilst continuing to perform as a guest Etoile, the need to pass on her art and take a more global outlook rapidly became vital. As a guest teacher both in and abroad, Elisabeth Platel also revived and coordinated State Diploma studies for the Paris Opera's Corps de Ballet. In September 2004, she became director of the Ballet School.
