TCS 01 • Season 2016/17

The idea behind Tuscany Cycling Season is to cel- ebrate the Tuscan region through its long-standing love affair with cycling. It is a story both about the region and about bikes, illustrating that the best way to enjoy the stunning local landscape is through the many cycling events and bike itineraries on offer. We take inspiration from legendary cycling lo- cations around the region and its most heroic cy- clists, such as historic champions like , and Gastone Nencini. Today, Tus- cany still hosts some of the most important cycling races in the world, which pass through towns and countryside to become an essential part of the lo- cal heritage. The region is full of places and events that all have their own unique take on cycling, with everything from bicycle tourism to mountain bik- ing and Enduro trails. Tuscany is home to many fascinating cycling routes for all levels, such as the ancient Via Francigena pil- grims’ way, the Etruscan coastline, UNESCO site trails, Apennine tracks and the white gravel roads of L'Eroica race - to name but a few that are featured on the following pages. Tuscany Cycling Season reveals what a unique and authentic experience it is to cycle in Tuscany; we give voice to the stories, events and people who keep the Tuscan cycling season alive all year round. It’s become a classic competition that marks the beginning of the profes- sional cycling season: the Strade Bi- anche is a long-distance bike race open to professionals and amateurs alike. The race gets its name from the white gravel roads that crisscross the extraordinary landscape around Sie- na; the strade bianche are the classi- cally Tuscan off-road tracks that con- nect villages and vineyards, hills and scenery. The race starts and ends in the medieval city of Siena, taking in the Chianti region and the Crete Se- nesi on the way. This race – and its sister race, L'Eroica - are for real cy- cling heroes, people who not only love cycling, but who also understand and want to connect with the region’s his- tory, artistic heritage and authentic way of life. It is as iconic as a glass of Chianti Classico.

The white of the grav- el roads traces a line between the dappled green of overhanging olive branches and rows of cypress trees. It passes through the clayey grey of the Crete Senesi, the red of Siena’s soil and the bricks of the an- cient walls and medieval villages. It crosses the yellow hue of farmed hills and, finally, meets the intense deep red of Chianti wine. These are the iconic colors of this vast landscape, famous for its network of white gravel roads, where an equally unique race has shot to fame. Every March, the Strade Bianche opens the professional cycling season with a race that, in less than ten years, has be- come an event comparable to the great classic races of Northern Europe. The race has a truly spectacular start and finish in Piazza del Campo, in the heart of the medieval city of Siena, a location steeped in centuries of history, art and culture. manage to reserve a place, you can still enjoy the year-round well-marked path that runs for about 200 km through the heart of the Siena region and some of Tuscany’s most iconic landscapes, in- cluding Chianti, the Crete Senesi and Val d’Orcia. Chianti is ideal for both road cyclists and tourists, as there are plenty of mixed routes on both asphalt and white roads that gently climb and descend over rolling green hills. These can be mixed with sprints and tougher climbs if you want to put yourself to the test, although the maximum altitude never exceeds 900 m. I forced myself to ride only during daylight- hours, so that I would not miss any of the places along the way. Or, should I say, in which I would have “immersed” myself, given the amount of water that rained down on me. At times, I felt as if I was swimming rather than pedalling. A long descent with sweeping curves accompanies you down to Pontremoli, where you can stop and savor the typ- ical local dessert, the Amor. Crossing the medieval bridge across the Magra, continue along the right bank of the river, first on a county road and then moving onto a secondary road that heads through the woods and brings us to Lusuolo Castle and a small village with typical stone houses. From here, descending along a short stretch of highway and crossing the river, we enter Aulla cycling on a wide cycle lane. After Aulla, two different routes are possible: the fittest can tackle the long climb towards Ponzanello, and your efforts will be rewarded with beautiful glimpses of the Apuan Alps, like snow- white jagged teeth. Choose the other route and take your bike on the train, getting off at Santo Stefano Magra, pick- ing up a cycling route that coasts the canals and leads to Sarzana; a patch of Liguria wedged into Tuscan territory. For some people, riding in the mountains feels like going home, or is a way of getting back to nature. Even if you've made it to the top of a mountain a thousand times, no peak is ever taken for granted. Pedalling along a ridge with the wind in your wheels is always a treat and an ex- perience to be savored, especially here, where the dark side of the Apennines opens onto the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. History books teach us that it was along these ridges, in 217 BC, that the Carthaginian general Hannibal passed on his way to Rome with an army of 40,000 men accompanied by elephants. The Hannibal Pass lies at an altitude of 1,798 meters, overlooking the peaks of the Tre Potenze Alps, dominating the Black Lake, a reservoir formed from the excavation of an ancient glacier.
