Cornerstone Community Outreach
Addressing Homelessness, Providing Shelter, Accep ng People, Finding Home.
Annual Report 2013 A Le er From Our Execu ve Director
This year has been filled with many adventures. Corner‐ stone Community Outreach (CCO) has been privileged to walk with many families and individuals as they pass through a very difficult me in their life. By the me they reach our doorstep, the majority of our shelter guests have lost everything. Unfor‐ tunately, some have suffered more loss than you and I can im‐ agine and homelessness is just one more thing on their plate. Regardless of the circumstances, we are commi ed to walking with our shelter guests through this me by assis ng them in stabilizing their finances, housing, and ul mately their lives. It has been an honor to help those who come through our doors. It is an experience and an adventure that we would not trade and we look forward to another year of serving those who are less fortunate. Our mission at CCO is to help people recover from the hardships of homelessness with dignity while helping them restore their God‐given worth and self‐esteem.
‐ Sandra Ramsey Execu ve Director, Cornerstone Community Outreach 2013 CCO Awards & Recogni on

Vol‐ unteer Fund Managers are located throughout the city and do work on the “front lines” with families and individuals who are in crisis. Congratula ons, Jeremy! Mission
Addressing Homelessness, Providing Shelter, Accep ng People, Finding Home.
History
Cornerstone Community Outreach (CCO) began as a grass‐roots effort in 1989, with a few people working to meet the needs of their neighbors. In the 1980’s, women with children were becoming the new faces of homelessness in America. CCO began to welcome, serve and shelter women with children. Over the following 25 years our programs have expanded to serve nearly 500 men, women and children daily. As a result, hundreds of single individuals and families are given an opportunity to reclaim their lives from the devasta ng effects of poverty and homelessness. No ma er the background or situa on, all of our shelter guests have come to CCO seeking help. Our goal is to meet people where they are at and help them begin building a new life, one step at a me.

People become homeless for many reasons. CCO believes that everyone deserves safe, affordable housing and while that is being established families and individuals are en tled to safe shelter. The homeless father with children, parents with teens, pregnant women, persons of all orienta ons, the elderly and aging, the physically challenged, o en have difficulty finding shelter. This only reinforces a sense of isola on that so many feel while struggling with homelessness. CCO has chosen to shelter people who are o en ineligible for serves at other agencies giving them an opportunity for a brighter future. Shelter to Housing
“The night before I came to CCO I slept out on a park bench. I said I would never stay in a shelter. And what did God do? He put me right in a shelter and blessed me there.” “I thought people in a shelter had to sleep on the floor. I was afraid that people would steal my stuff and that it would be dirty. I thought I would have to leave in the early morning and stay out all day. Naomi House has been totally different. I have a case manager, three meals a day, I didn’t have to sleep on the floor or leave during the day. It isn’t dirty. I’ve improved mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally.” It would be difficult to talk to Carla and miss her determination and gratitude. She recently found out that after months of hard work she has an apartment! “Recently, I got a housing call and I was told, ‘It’s a go. Start packing!’ Now, I have a place and I’m so excited “Now, I have a place and I’m so excited about about my little apartment. It’s perfect for me. And it makes me think about how good God is!” my little apartment. It’s perfect for me.”

Over fi y years of living under a Congolese dictatorship was long enough for Ildevert Mboungou. In the Congo, Ildevert worked as a chef for the employees of a major oil company. When it was found out that he was a supporter of the Democra c party the dictatorship that ruled and mistreated the Congolese people for decades began to severely abuse him. Ildevert was forced to leave his employment, his home, and all he knew. He had to escape his homeland and flee to America. “I flew directly to Chicago. I did not know anyone. I was alone and deeply sad. I was living in the el train sta on and a man approached me and spoke my lan‐ guage. He told me that he knew where I could get help and he brought me to CCO (Cornerstone Community Outreach). I don’t know who he was.” Homeless shelters do not exist in the Congo and Ildevert was not aware that help was available or how to find it. This kind stranger took him from being isolated and living outside, to CCO where he could find a sense of community, support, and help for the future.
“I came to CCO with only a plas c bag that held my Bible, documents, passport and coat. That is all I had but I was happy to find shelter. I met Franke, Andre and Jeremy and they made me feel welcome. I was able to have meals, clothes, “I was no longer alone and outside. Coming showers, and a bed. I am no longer alone and outside. Coming to the shelter was extraordinary!” to the shelter was extraordinary!” Ildevert’s me is full. He is an on‐going volunteer in the CCO dining room. He also volunteers at the Kovler Center for vic ms of torture. He con nues to take a course in English as a second language and pursue culinary training. We look forward to seeing great things from this humble, gentle and grateful man.

“I always wanted my boys. Nathan, Jr., and Isaiah needing me caused me to change my life.” Nathan spoke openly to me about his ordeal to gain custody of his two sons, his efforts to bring them to a safe place, and how that path led them to Cornerstone Communi‐ ty Outreach (CCO).
Nathan received a call from a family member telling him he needed to come and get his boys. They had been living with their mother and the situa on with her had rapidly deteriorated. He was told if he didn’t come immediately and take them they would go into protec ve cus‐ tody. He felt that this was an opportunity to be a full‐ me father to his children. He went to get them.
He needed a place to get on his feet, not only for himself but for his sons, as well. Fathers find it par cularly difficult to get shelter for themselves and their children. Most shelters are de‐ signed for single adults or women with children. But there’s a growing need for dads to find a place to be the fathers they want to be.
“I had never been homeless before. I went to the Department of Human Services office and told them that I wanted to raise my boys and we needed shelter. They said, “Have you ever been to Cornerstone?” I was skep cal at first. My boys had lived in some rough places with their mother but they had never been in a shelter. I was surprised, it’s a nice environment. Of course it has its challenges, living so closely with other families. CCO is close to the lake and some mes we go for a walk on the beach at Lake Michigan. We can be together and watch the dogs run and play. We can just enjoy being a family.”
Since moving into the shelter, Nathan has worked with his caseworker to secure full‐ me employment. When talking about crea ng a life with his boys, Nathan said, “You have to have “You have to have a star ng a star ng point, a place to begin.” point. A place to begin.” We are glad Nathan turned to Cornerstone as “a place to begin.” Today, Nathan con nues to be employed full‐ me and has retained his permanent housing.
Over the last few years we have seen an increase in fathers with children seeking shelter. We applaud the men who choose to raise their children even under the most difficult circum‐ stances. CCO considers it a privilege to con nue serving and welcoming this underserved pop‐ ula on.
