We look forward to officially welcoming our new Bishop, Joseph Toal, as successor to Bishop Emeritus , as Bishop of the Diocese of Motherwell. As you have perhaps read in the newspapers, Bishop Toal has had 11 months to familiarise himself with our diocese and to get to know the priests and deacons, as well as some of the laity in our parishes, where he has found great heart and encouragement through the faith and sense of community in our diocese, as well as a warmth and great appreciation for the faith of the Church. We are surely happy that a new bishop has been chosen for us in a relatively short space of time, allowing us to build and work together for the future growth of the Church in Motherwell, at a time when many important decisions will have to be made to fit us for mission and not just maintenance of the life of the Church in our parish communities.

Please pray for our new bishop in the weeks leading up to his Installation as , which will take place in our Cathedral Church on Monday 23rd June at 7.00 pm, the Vigil of the Solemnity of the Birthday of St John the Baptist. Pray too for the priests, deacons, religious and laity of our diocese that we will all work together for Christ the Lord, and that Our Blessed Lady, Assumed into Heaven, Patroness of our Diocese, will draw us closer not only to her Son but to one another in a communion of faith and love. Praise be to God!

THE CATHEDRAL & ST LUKE’S SANCTUARY

For a long time—well, really, only for almost 3 years—I have wanted to speak about the Ambo (or Lectern or Pulpit) and its role in the liturgical life of the Church. Basically we are talking here about Mass and Devotions and any Act of Worship in the Cathedral. What is going to be said here applies to St Luke’s as well.

The word Ambo is a Greek word that means step or elevated. The great importance of the Word of God in the scriptures proclaimed at each Eucharistic celebration means that there is a special place for the Proclamation of the Word of God. The Ambo is the place on the sanctuary reserved for the Proclamation of the Word of God—the Readings, the Psalm, the Gospel, and perhaps also the Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful). The Ambo should be used exclusively for this purpose. As the place where the Word of God is proclaimed and where the Bishop, Priest or Deacon preaches on that Word of God, I think we need to take this opportunity to accord a reverence not just for the Proclaimed Word of God at the Ambo but as THE PLACE for the Word and not for any other words.

So we are going to put into practice from today this reverence for the Holy Scriptures. This means that the Ambo is to be used only for the Word of God. It is not the place for Appeals, Announcements, Commentaries, the leading of Congregational singing or rehearsals before parish and diocesan celebrations. If such practices are required then we will provide a microphone and lectern for these purposes at another location on the sanctuary.

Just as we should (and do) accord respect and reverence for the , the Presider’s Chair, the Bishop’s Chair and the Tabernacle so should we also show a similar respect and reverence for the Ambo, from which place God speaks to his people through the Word of Scripture and Christ speaks to his people when the Gospel is proclaimed.

Perhaps it is also a timely moment to say a word about the Sanctuary (commonly referred to as the altar).

The whole Sanctuary space should be treated with the utmost reverence and respect—this is the place where we celebrate the mysteries of our faith! Any casualness or “ordinariness” in the Sanctuary space is to be absolutely avoided! It is not the place for idle chatter or conversation. Nor should the altar, ambo or any other object on the Sanctuary be treated as a shelf, storage place, or just for leaning on, for whatever reason or purpose!

And while on this subject, do we not all need to re-evaluate our attitude while we are in the Cathedral or our parish Church? Sometimes our chatter and talk and comments seem to show a lack of reverence and /or unawareness of where we are and what we are about! I think we have to become more aware of those people who are praying before and after Masses and other Services and accord a respect for their right to have some silence in what is a very valid moment and time for personal prayer! So, in the Cathedral and the Church we need, I would suggest, to be more aware of the needs and rights of others to have time and quiet for prayer. Particularly before our Sunday Masses we need to avoid what appears to be idle chatter (perhaps pleasant and homely but maybe not helping to raise our minds and hearts to God!) and to help all who are gathering for Mass to have the opportunity to prepare mind and heart, soul and body for the worthy celebrations of the Sacred Mysteries. Any musical preparations for Mass should be completed well in advance of the congregation gathering for the celebration of the liturgy.

This is not intended to make the Cathedral or our parish Church into a place where we feel unwelcome or are afraid to speak a word to those around us but rather a serious call to a respect for the building where we worship and a serious respect for those who worship in this building with us.
