These papers of Phillip Van Horn Weems (1899-1979), retired U.S. Navy Captain; author; former partner of Weems System of Navigation; and inventor and teacher of marine, air, and celestial systems of navigation, were given to the Manuscripts Section by Captain P.V.H. Weems in 1965. The book which accompanied the collection was transferred to the State Library Section. The materials in this collection measure 31.29 cubic feet. There are no restrictions on the materials with the exception of the audio interviews which require permission from the donor to access. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in Phillip Van Horn Weems the may be made for purposes of scholarly research.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The papers of Phillip Van Horn Weems, numbering approximately 15,000 items, are for the period 1833-1973 and contain accounts, correspondence, diaries, biographical and genealogical data, inventions, photographs, materials on naval matters and navigation instruments, audio interviews, records related to the Weems System of Navigation as well as student and course records on the teaching of this system. Most of the correspondence falls in the interim of Weems’ college days at the U.S. Naval Academy through the middle 1940’s when Weems’ navigation firm was doing record business due to wartime needs. While a naval officer in 1928 Weems established the Weems System of Navigation in partnership with his wife. The correspondence is of a personal and business nature, and because the two categories were usually found together in letters no attempt at separation was made on this basis. Incoming correspondence is filed alphabetically by author and outgoing correspondence is chronological in arrangement. Much of the correspondence to Weems was from business associates and clients such as Bastian Brothers; Beacon Book Shop; Air Associates; Albert Woodley Company; L.J. Comrie; Jerome Dossat; L.R. Gray; Institute of Aeronautical Sciences; International Map Company; Assen Jordanoff; Alexander Klemin; Thoburn C. Lyon; McGraw-Hill Book Co., Inc; Creighton Merriall; Motor Boating Magazines; National Geographical Society; New York University; Nicholas-Beazley Airplane Company, Inc.; Karl Ort; Ryan School Aeronautics; H. Schbrebak; Scripto; George Smith; Supply Division, Inc.; Thomsen- Ellis Company; Mary Tornich; U. S. Government; U.S. Naval Academy; U.S. Naval Institute; W. and L.E. Gurley Company; War Production Board; R.J. Weake; Willie– Owen-Otis-Farr-Gallagher; and Yachting Magazine. Weems belonged to an organization which sold land in Maryland called the Deep Creek Lake Syndicate. Correspondence involving these dealings may be located under Weems’ incoming letters from such men as Enoch Garey and Swepson Earle. Family correspondence contains letters of George Hatton Weems (Brigadier-General, U.S. Army), William Loch Cook, Andrew Gennett, Joseph B. Weems, P.V.H. Weems (no relative), Emily Weems, and Margaret T. Weems (wife of P.V.H. Weems). Photographs in the collection include scenes taken by Weems while a midshipman on summer cruise from the U.S. Naval Academy, ca. 1910-1912; the Wright brothers and their aircraft; Trans-Oceanic Flyers Convention in Rome, 1932; Long Beach, California, earthquake results, 1933; aircraft; U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland; U.S. Naval Academy class of 1912 reunion; and U.S. Navy Yard, Philadelphia, 1906-1922. Genealogical data on the following families is contained in the papers: Atlee, Barber, Carmichael, Haldeman, Jenkins, Riegard, Rush, Robbins, Chapman, Hagewood, Lansdale, Lock, Pearson, West, Philips Van Horn, Weems, and Weems’ kindred families. Charts for the Weems family have been included with the printed register. The largest single concentration in the collection is one of student files of the Weems School of Navigation (founded in 1927). These are arranged alphabetically by names of student. Potential students’ inquiries regarding the Weems System of Navigation course are kept separate from correspondence. Accounts of the Weems System of Navigation are arranged by name of company followed by the inclusive dates. Materials of earliest date are in the Weems family correspondence; included are letters of Bessie Rye and Eleanor Ann Hatton. Dates of the old family correspondence range from 1837 to 1902. An 1857-1861 diary and account book kept by a medical doctor in Tennessee, Thomas H. Rye, gives information such as medical fees during those years. There are 30 volumes of diaries which cover the years 1911-1963 intermittently, the heaviest concentration of which is on the years Weems was a Midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy. Besides glimpses of Academy life, one is able to discern something of the life of midshipmen on summer cruise. For example, Weems describes his visits in 1910 to London, Marseilles, Tangiers, Gibraltar, Madeira Islands, and other places. Weems (U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1912) was active in alumni affairs of the U.S. Naval Academy and in the civic affairs of the City of Annapolis, Maryland. Papers of his involvement in these activities may be found in the collection. A brief business history of the Cuatotolapam Sugar Company, manufacturers of sugar and alcohol, in the State of Veracruz, Mexico, of which Eugene V. Weems was President from 1904 (then the San Juan Sugar Company) until 1922, is also included in the papers. From P.V.H. Weems’ naval career appear some official papers concerning naval operations in which Weems participated including the period during World War I and World War II. Several World War II ships and overseas military newspapers or releases, in addition to war songs, are included in the papers. The audio interviews consist of taped interviews with various members of the Weems family, concentrating on the life of Phillip Van Horn Weems. The interviews were recorded on reel to reel tape, with audiocassette copies created from each reel. The originals have been retained. There are no transcripts available.
