GOD’S MISSION IS MY MISSION

AND GOD’S MISSION IS URGENT! 1

“500th Anniversary of the

Reformation is…this year!”

1517-2017

Recently, along with four of the men of ORLC, I attended the Men’s Retreat at Lutheran Island Camp. An awesome men’s ministry that has been in existence at LIC for 23 years. I have attended about fifteen of these and did serve on the planning/presentation team for about fourteen years. Pastor Dan Domke began this ministry while he served at Trinity in Fergus Falls (he has been pastor at Huron SD, former Vicar Eric Van Sharrel’s home church, for the past seven years).

Anyway, here are just a few thoughts/highlights from the retreat, which had some excellent presentations. The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod’s theme for the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation is: Reformation 2017 It’s Still All About Jesus! One might think it should be obvious that the reformation was all about Jesus. In my opinion it is NOT so obvious for a great many people today. People and churches all around us have compromised the singular confession of faith or have forgotten that the church as the ‘Body of Christ’ (1 Cor 12:27) has the mission of proclaiming Christ crucified. Mission and ministry are still all about Jesus. The church is still ‘suppose’ to be about proclaiming salvation by means of Jesus suffering and death on the cross. The purpose of the church is simple: We are to be “seeking the lost while also strengthening the faith of the faithful.” Both are accomplished through the faithful proclamation of both law and gospel.

In Luther’s day, Christ had been lost in great measure. The gospel was undermined when the church taught that Jesus’ death was not sufficient for complete forgiveness and salvation. Some of the Roman Catholic doctrines that Luther and the other reformers came to question included:

• Prayers for the dead • Purgatory • Devotion to Mary and the rosary • Penance • Mandatory confession to a priest • Celibacy • The Mass as a bloodless sacrifice • Transubstantiation • Mary and the saints • The 7 Sacraments • Masses for the dead • Indulgences • The institution of the office of Pope

The Reformation refocused people to turn to the Bible for the truth and there they found all the above doctrines to not be true.

As much as things change around us and as much as the world (and even some churches) tries to compromise away the teachings of the Bible the church must always stand firm in teaching and living by the pure unchanging truths as revealed in God’s Word. For it is through that Word by which people are won and kept in Christ. That is the heart of what the Christian church must be faithful to.

Heavenly Father, you gave Your only Son Jesus to save us and to save the world through His death and resurrection. Make us both bold and yet gentle in proclaiming Christ alone as the Only Way to heaven. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Some other tidbits garnered from the Men’s Retreat to pass on:

• “Let the wife make the husband glad to come home and let him make her sorry to see him leave” –Martin Luther • Almost half of all Americans don’t feel lying is wrong, at one time almost all considered lying to be a sin. • From a 2015 Barna study: o 48% of millennials believe Jesus is not God. o 65% of millennials believe Jesus committed sin.

• There is constant pressure in society (even in the many churches) to compromise the Word because people are afraid to offend someone. But Jesus said we need to be more concerned about offending God. Matt 10:28 “Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” • President Don Fondow shared this from a conversation he had with an ELCA member. The member said: “You LC-MS people are so narrow minded.” Don’s response was: “Yes we are so narrow minded that our ears match. Since you in the ELCA are so open- minded why don’t you accept us as we are and leave us alone.”

Women of Our Redeemer let us…

Study God’s Word about

“Women with Jesus at the Cross

and the Tomb”

As we approach and journey through Lent let us focus on the women who were

present when Jesus was crucified on Calvary and later at the tomb. Come, let us

enjoy some Bible study, skit, music, food and fellowship.

MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT March is awareness month for the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross is dedicated to helping people in need throughout the and, in association with other Red Cross networks, throughout the world. Today, the supporters, volunteers and employees of the American Red Cross provide compassionate care in five critical areas:

• People affected by disasters in America • Support for members of the military and their families • Blood collection, processing and distribution • Health and safety education and training • International relief and development

The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet. Although the Red Cross is not a government agency, it is an essential part of the response when disaster strikes.

The Red Cross helps military members, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to the challenges of military service. Emergency communications, training, support to wounded warriors and veterans, and access to community resources help an average of 150,000 military families and veterans annually.

The Red Cross is the nation’s leading provider of health and safety courses, such as CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard training. Each year, more than 9 million Americans participate in our training programs, including first responders, educators, babysitters, and people who want to be prepared to help others in an emergency.

The American Red Cross has 5 office locations throughout the Dakotas Region and numerous sites where we offer classes or have area disaster staff/resources. Serving Eastern & Northwestern Minnesota: 2602 12th Street North, Fargo, ND 58102, Phone: 701-364-1800.

The Red Cross Depends on Volunteers

• Volunteers constitute about 95 percent of the American Red Cross workforce. Volunteers make it possible to provide services such as... • Responding to nearly 70,000 disasters every year, most of them home/apartment fires. • Teaching millions of people first aid, CPR, swimming and other lifesaving skills. • Helping the American Red Cross collect approximately 6.3 million units of blood from roughly 3.7 million volunteer donors. • Delivering urgent family messages to members of the military—around the clock and around the globe. • As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Network, reconnecting hundreds of families separated by war and disaster around the world.

From the CCC Director Angela Wheeler… In like a lion, out like a lamb. As I am writing this article it is almost 40 degrees outside and feels like summer! Hard to believe we still have some winter left. So far, this winter has gone quickly for us on the center side of things. We are excited for spring to come and for the completion of our new playground and to be able to play on it! Please come out to support the CCC on March 22 for our Lent Dinner Fundraiser. We will be serving spaghetti again this year!

We had a big cleaning day in February, so I feel like our center is all shiny. NAEYC is coming to revisit us in March, please pray for a positive outcome from this visit. We are busy planning our CCC Sunday songs (April 23) as well as many fun activities for the week of the young child.

As always, we are so thankful for all the support the church gives to the CCC. Continued support through prayer, time and donations are always welcomed. Thank you!!!

Donation Items: egg cartons, paper towel/toilet paper rolls, cotton balls, q-tips, brown lunch bags, paper plates, paper cups.

PRAISE THE LORD for HE is good! My heart is singing with His praises once again! January turned out to be a good month. The Lord continued to move the hearts of our members. Through your contributions, we were able to pay all of our January bills including a $6,615.75 boiler repair and maintenance bill AND pay back the $10,000 we owed to the Budget Support Fund! Praise the Lord! I’ve been warned not to get used to this as the lean summer months are ahead. However, I have faith and continue to pray that the Lord will help our church to remain faithful to our higher mission, even through the warmer weather and transitions we face in our future. HE is always faithful and will see us through!

Jerilyn Kazeck, Business/Facilities Manager

Facilities Fun Fact:

Let’s talk trash! Did you know that there are 62 garbage cans in the church building? That’s a lot of trash! Thankfully, members of our faithful board of trustees have decided to start a recycling program in the church. Please look for the new black bins placed in the dining hall and college room as collection locations for cans, bottles, and cardboard. Volunteers from the Trustees group will be emptying the bins once or twice a week. Thank you, Trustees, for your faithful service and helping to keep God’s good earth green!
