Concerning Anniversaries, , Consecrations, & Dedications

We are very excited to welcome , the chief shepherd of our Local Church, the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis this Sunday as we celebrate the 12th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Church of the Sacred Heart. Our parish was founded by Archbishop in 1911. The “new” church was built and opened for service in 1958. It would have been blessed at the time of its opening, however, the rite of solemn consecration known to us today as the Rite of a Dedication of a Church only took place in 2006 after a sanctuary redecoration project. To understand better the idea of a consecration and how it differsfrom a simple blessing the Catholic Encyclopedia is quite helpful. Below is an excerpt of the article on “Consecration” found at www.newadvent.org/ cathen/04276a.htm.

“Consecration, in general, is an act by which a thing is sepa- rated from a common and profane to a sacred use, or by which a person or thing is dedicated to the service and wor- ship of God by prayers, rites, and ceremonies. Among the Romans whatever was devoted to the worship of their gods (fields, animals, etc.) was said to be consecrated, and the objects which pertained intimately to their worship (temples, altars, etc.) were said to be dedicated. These words were, however, often used indiscriminately, and in both cases it was understood that the object once consecrated or dedicat- ed remained sacred in perpetuum (In perpetuity). The Church distinguishes consecration from blessing, both in re- gard to persons and to things. Hence the Roman Pontifical treats of the consecration of a and of the blessing of an abbot, of the blessing of a corner-stone and the consecra- tion of a church or altar. In both, the persons or things pass from a common, or profane, order to a new state, and be- come the subjects or the instruments of Divine protection. At a consecration the ceremonies are more solemn and elabo- rate than at a blessing. The ordinary minister of a consecra- tion is a bishop, whilst the ordinary minister of a blessing is a priest. At every consecration the holy oils are used; at a blessing customarily only holy water.”

COMMEMORATIVE SCROLL OF 2006 DEDICATION Likely reasons why the Consecration did not take place in 1958 relates to two factors. First, it was not the practice of the time to sol- emnly consecrate a Church until after it was debt free. Second, the solemn rite of consecration as it existed in 1958 took between four and five hours to complete! The Basilica of St. Mary was only consecrated in 1941 during the Ninth National Eucharistic Congress that the Archdiocese hosted that year several decades after the Basilica first opened. According to the website of the Cathedral of Saint Paul “Archbishop William O. Brady consecrated the Cathedral in 1958 in a five-hour rite. The Rite of Consecration is not often performed and a church must meet strict canonical requirements: it must be durably constructed, monumental in character, substan- tially complete and there must be absolute certainty that the building will never fall out of the hands of the Church. When this sol- emn ceremony was performed, it raised the Cathedral to a higher level of prestige.” Sacred Heart Catholic Church • 3 • June 10, 2018 Appointed Sunday Readings 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time- 6/10/18 Administration First Reading: The woman answered, "The serpent tricked me into it, so I ate it."
