FREEMASONRY IN CASTLEDERG AND SURROUNDING AREA

Foreword

Ready access to information is one of the expectations of today’s fast moving world.

Business and organisations are expected to have available the means of easy discovery of detail about their life and structure.

It was with these thoughts in mind our initial task was to set about compiling some information on the Past Master’s of Castlederg Masonic Lodge No. 799.

As we researched this detail we soon discovered how the Warrant of Lodge No. 799 came to rest in the town of Castlederg and other relevant pointers to our Lodge’s history.

We trust our work will be an invaluable source of information not only to newly Initiated Brethren but to all the members of the Lodge and indeed to anyone else who may be interested in the story of Lodge 799.

We acknowledge the assistance of R.W. Bro. Norman Humes, J.P. recently appointed Prov. Ass. Grand Master of Tyrone & Fermanagh and Past Master of Lodge 799. W.Bro. James A. Emery, Past Master of Lodge 799. W.Bro. Andrew McDermott Past Master of Lodge 332 , Bro. Nigel Bogle of Lodge 799 and Miss Rebecca Hayes, Archivist at the Freemason’s Hall Dublin.

We have discovered ample evidence of the workings of Freemasonry in the Castlederg area since 1793.

A report in THE NORTHERN STAR Newspaper published on the 16th January 1793. States “A meeting of the General Committee of the Free and Accepted Masons of the County of Tyrone was held in the Committee Rooms in on the 6th January 1793 to determine what conduct should be pursued as Masons and Citizens at this momentous crisis”. One of the five Lodges named is No. 664 . The Worshipful Master is given as William Caldwell and the Lodge was said to have 26 Members. An entry from Grand Lodge Minutes of 2nd October 1794 states how Grand Lodge. “Ordered a Warrant No. 799 to Robert Kile, William Robb and Jon Matthews, to hold a Lodge in Lislaird, Co. Tyrone. A document published by The General Masonic Committee displayed in the present Castlederg Lodge Room refers to Thomas Porter being Worshipful Master of Lodge No. 799 in the year 1799. Correspondence between this Lodge and Grand Lodge reveals how the Lodge had recurring difficulties in meeting its debts to Grand Lodge. It would also appear that the Lodge administration was poor, as in year 1827 there was difficulty in determining just who were registered as members with Grand Lodge. A letter, held in Grand Lodge archives, dated the 24th June 1829 refers to 13 Brethren having met under the warrant of Lodge No. 799 on St. John’s day and of how the Lodge meetings were held in the kitchen of Charles Irvine, Castlederg, this Warrant was subsequently cancelled in the year 1835. A further entry from the minutes of The Grand Lodge of Ireland dated 4th February 1841 states “Read a memorial of T.H. Walsh, Hugh Harper and Henry Gay to be reformed into a Lodge of Freemasons at Lislaird near Castlederg.” In June 1841 Christopher Craig, who we mention later, was initiated into the Lodge. By the year 1855 the former financial and administration problems had returned. In 1856 the W.M. wrote to Grand Lodge stating “The Lodge hoped to liquidate its debt to Grand Lodge by next Saint John’s day, if not previously.” On the 27th December 1861, with the Lodge owing £5.13.6 in Dues to Grand Lodge Bro. Christopher Craig wrote asking for the advice of Grand Lodge in their present financial difficulties and enquiring if the warrant could be sold. He also spoke of poor attendances, infrequent meetings and how the Lodge met in his house. The Lodge’s warrant was subsequently suspended on the 2nd July 1863. In year 1872 the former Secretary wrote to Grand Lodge enquiring about the further restoration of the warrant, however this did not happen until the year 1886. The first Minute Book of Lodge 799 as it is Constituted to-day states, “that the first meeting of the Brethren interested in opening a Masonic Lodge in Castlederg was convened by Bro. H. H. Wood of Lodge No.547, by letter, dated 22nd March 1886.” The meeting was held in the Ferguson Arms Hotel on Wednesday 24th March 1886.

3

The subsequent meeting was also held in the Ferguson Arms Hotel on the 2nd April, 1886, when the following were nominated to be the first Officers in the Lodge.

W.M. Bro. Wm. McErvel Lodge 332 S.W. Bro. Wm. Irwin Lodge 251 J.W. Bro. T.J. Robert Johnston Lodge 332 and 251 Hon. Sec. Bro. H.H. Wood Lodge 547 S.D. Bro. A.T. Love Lodge 332 J.D. Bro. A. Anderson Lodge 547 I.G. Bro. Jos. Hall Lodge 547

Bro. James Craig, Drumnabey who attended the meeting, intimated that he held the suspended Warrant of Lodge No. 799. It was agreed that before taking further steps, regarding a memorial for a New Warrant, a deputation consisting of Bros. McErvel, Johnston, Irwin and Wood go to W.Bro. Craig’s house inspect the Warrant and report to the next meeting to be held on the 10th April 1886. Present on that occasion were Bros. H.H. Wood, A. Anderson, J.T.R. Johnston, R.A. Todd, Wm. Irwin, J. Hall and A.T. Love. Deputation reported that they had seen the Warrant, but W.Bro. James Craig would not give it up until he was paid £6.0.0. It was ascertained from Grand Lodge that the Warrant was suspended in 1863, the sum of £5.13.6 had been due from the former Lodge. The deputation were asked to see Bro. Craig again and secure the Warrant if possible, for a sum not exceeding £4.0.0. They agreed a sum of £2.0.0.to be paid for the warrant. Subsequently a memorial to Grand Lodge for the removal of the suspension was prepared and forwarded to Grand Lodge. The following three local Lodges, 251 , 547 , and 332 Omagh supported the memorial being prepared by the Castlederg Brethren.

In October 1886 the suspension was removed and the Warrant reinstated. Grand Lodge were paid the sum of £5.13.6. This being the amount of money due by the former Lodge.

The new Masonic Lodge under Warrant No.799 was constituted in the Courthouse, Castlederg on the 4th May, 1887. The constitution deputation from Provincial Grand Lodge, consisted of, W. Bro. O. T. Terman in the Chair, other Officers were W. Bro. G. Guail, Bro. A. Anderson, Bro. Major Irvine and Bro. R.G. Neilson. A letter held in the Grand Lodge archives, from the Prov. Grand Secretary states that, “He attended the meeting expecting to meet some farmers and others. To his pleasant astonishment he met well dressed farmers, gentlemen farmers and other well to do people”

The Lodge having opened in form on the first degree the Ceremony of Dedication was proceeded with after which the following Officers were Installed in accordance with Ancient Custom:

CONSTRUCTION OF PARISH / MASONIC HALL

Having first met in Castlederg Courthouse, the Brethren of the Lodge sought a permanent meeting place of their own. In May 1888 it was proposed that the old gas house in Meetinghouse Lane could be regarded as suitable premises to convert into a hall, however in August this suggestion was, for some reason which is not recorded, withdrawn.

In January 1889, Brothers McCormick, Leary, Johnston and Irwin were asked to seek a suitable site, no specific suggestions were made as to its location but provisional plans were drawn up by Bro. McElwee of Londonderry and discussions entered into as suitable sites with Mr. James Anderson the local agent for the landlord, Major Smyly.

By coincidence, the hand of the Great Architect of the Universe, the Rev. James Henry Gatchell, Rector of Derg Parish had recently been Initiated into Lodge 799, it is to him belongs the credit for the construction of the Parochial Hall and the Masonic Hall under one roof, thus cementing the amicable relationship between the Parish and Freemasonry in Castlederg. It has been rightly said, “If you want to see a memorial to Rev. Gatchell, just look at the bottom of the town”.

It was typical of this devoted Pastor and dedicated Freemason, that on the 5th June 1889 he announced in open Lodge that the site had been secured, carrying a ground rent to the Smyly Estate of £2 per Annum, that Major Smyly was donating the sum of £57 and that he was personally donating £50 to the building Fund. In the 1990’s Mr. David Smyly the then Landlord generously waived the ground rent paid equally by Church and Lodge, leaving the property freehold.

Subsequently plans from W.C. Wilson of Dublin were accepted by the Church Body and the Lodge, he was paid a fee of five guineas. In 1889 tenders for the construction of the building were sought, by February 1890 no acceptable tender had been received.

The Lodge minutes record how “as we failed to get a contractor at a reasonable price we should undertake the work ourselves”. It was further agreed that each member of the Lodge should join in a guarantee to indemnify those Brethren responsible to the Ulster Bank for the loan of £300, the Lodge’s share of the cost. Unfortunately neither the minutes of the Lodge nor of the Derg Parish Select Vestry record any detail of the construction of the building, so at least this paragraph of the hall’s history must remain unwritten. Subsequently the Freemason’s hall appears in the minutes with surprising suddenness.

The New Hall was dedicated on the 15th October 1890 at 12:15 p.m. in the presence of, His Grace The Duke of Abercorn, the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ireland, along with Col. G. Grant Irvine, The Right Worshipful Deputy Grand Master of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Tyrone and Fermanagh, Major Henry Irvine The Very Worshipful Senior Grand Deacon of the Province of Tyrone and Fermanagh, together with thirty-two visiting Brethren representing Lodges 102 Lifford, 164 Londonderry, 230 Aughnacloy, 251 Strabane, 256 , 281 St. Johnston, 320 Culmore, 332 Omagh, 438 Raphoe, 547 Newtownstewart, 588 Donegal and 891 Enniskillen, no mean feat considering the difficulties of transport at that time. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our former Brethren for the provision and maintenance of the building we have today.
