A Guide to Choosing the Right School for Your Child at 11+ & Nearby Schools

Steps into choosing the right school for your children:

1/ Read carefully the Sophia Guide to Independent Schools in London or near London, and digest all the key data.

2/ Make a short-list of the five schools you would consider. Decide what is important to you. Type of school, location, its academic results, its facilities, its extracurricular activities, its fees etc?

3/ Download the Inspection report of each of these schools – this gives a flavour of the school; what they do well and the areas they need to develop.

4/ Visit the school on of their Open days/evenings – this will be on their website.

5/ Book a personal visit to the school – read our Director of Education David McCarthy’s article below on the sorts of things you should be looking out for: https://www.sophia.app/sophia-articles/sophia-article-open-day.html

6/ Look at the closing dates for these applications – these will be on their web site

7/ Once you have chosen your school, register for it.

8/ Enter your child for their entrance exams. The dates of these are published on their website.

9/ Practise, practise, practise those 11+ papers – I have included many samples of these (see profiles of the schools below).

10/ Hire a tutor for 1-to-1 sessions with your children. This will give them the best possibility of passing these exams. At Sophia, we have experienced and qualified teachers who have a track-record helping students get into their senior schools.

With Sophia you can book bespoke and individualised 1-to-1 tuition for your child, or you can join our 11+ Virtual School (where we have maximum class sizes of two students per teacher). To book click on the hyperlink below:

Ibstock Place School Co-ed- Roehampton Description:

Ibstock Place School is a coeducational independent school for children aged 4–18, made up of a prep school and senior school. It is located on the edge of Richmond Park – a National Nature Reserve and a European Special Area of Conservation – in Roehampton, South West London. The school first opened in 1896 as a demonstration school for a teacher training college, which was established upon the educational principles of Freidrich Froebel. Froebel’s ideas were considered radical at the time, because of the emphasis they placed on the learning experiences of young children, but both the college and school proved to be very successful. The school was originally located in Kensington but had to be evacuated to Hertfordshire at the start of World War II. When the school returned to London, it was re-housed at Ibstock Place in Roehampton. The school remains on this site today but is now independent of the Froebel Trust. The school states that it is committed to providing a ‘liberal and humane education.’ It offers a broad, flexible and challenging academic curriculum with a strong focus on traditional academic subjects.
