The Great Ocean Walk – 5 days
Discover beautiful Victoria on the striking Great Ocean Walk coordinated by the good people at bothfeet. Stroll through the seaside village of Apollo Bay, continue on through cool-climate rainforest, remote beaches and coastal cliff tops, concluding with a Twelve Apostles scenic helicopter flight.
On this trail, you’ll explore Marengo Marine Sanctuary, and trek through old-growth rainforests on the stretch between Shelley Beach and Parker Inlet. In the warmer months, perhaps take a relaxing dip in the secluded waters of Blanket Bay.
All nights of the walk are at the one lodge, which means there’s no packing up until the last day, and you’ll only carry day-packs containing lunch, water and personal needs. With walking groups no larger than twelve hikers at a time, this an intimate way to experience one of the great coastlines of the world.
Day One: Apollo Bay to Shelley Beach Stroll through the seaside village of Apollo Bay to Marengo Marine at Marengo Point. See unique birds, marine life and wildflowers and lush cool-climate rainforest with Mountain Ash and tree ferns.
Day Two: Shelley Beach to Parker Inlet A day of beach walking from Shelley Beach to Blanket Bay and Parker River. Lovely for swimming in the warmer months.
Day Three: Parker Inlet to Aire River Walk through this perfect koala habitat to the Cape Otway Lightstation, and walk the sandy trail with expansive ocean views to Aire Valley – a wetland estuary home to many rare birds and greenery.
Day Four: Aire River to Johanna Beach Walk through a canopy of coastal heath to Castle Cove, with sheer cliffs dropping to sapphire ocean, rough grass-tree forests, wild flowers and breathtaking Johanna Beach. (Option to walk into the lodge).
Day Five: Johanna Beach to Moonlight Head Country lane walking that is the highest point of the whole trail. Here begins the ‘Wild Side’ – dramatic changes in elevation deliver wild and remote Southern Ocean views.
