OF ULYSSES ACT I The Spartans are mourning the death of their king, Castor, slain by Lynceus. Castor's beloved, Telai·ra, confides to the princess Phebe that nothing will ever console her at this Netherlands Opera loss. But Pollux, Castor's immortal brother, has avenged him and lays the remains of PIERRE AUDI, Director Lynceus at her feet. He declares his love for Tela·ira who skillfully rejects him and asks him ANTHONY ROLFE JOHNSON as Ulysses to intercede with his father, , to restore Castor to life. GRACIELA ARAYA as Penelope

ACT II Pollux is confronted by a painful dilemma: "Friendship [for Pollux] burns to obtain what love [for Telaira] shudders to hear." He finally surrenders to TeIaira's entreaties. Jupiter in the informs his son that Castor can return to earth only on condition that Pollux takes his place BAM Majestic Theater in Hades. DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM THE WORLD FAMED THE BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF MUSIC ACT III HAYDEN PLANETARIUM Phebe, secretly in love with Pollux, tries to prevent him from gaining access to the cavern of Hades. ACTrv In the Elysian Fields the Happy Shades try to divert Castor, inconsolable at the loss of Telaira. Pollux joins him and tells him of his personal sacrifice, which is all the greater since he, too, loves Tela"ira, a rivalry that he had never confessed to Castor. Mercury comes to fetch Castor who declares that he will not stay on earth for more than one da y in order to see Tela"ira one last time, after which he will regain his place in Hades and render his brother "life, his throne and his altars." He pays no heed to the Happy Shades who invite them both to remain in their "abode of eternal peace."

ACTV Phebe discovers that Castor has returned to life; mad with rage at seeing him beside Telaira, she plans on avenging what whe considers an insult to the immortal Pollux before deciding to commit suicide in order to join him in Hades. Castor, in turn, discloses to Telaira the henry's end vow that he has made to Pollux. Unable to resign herself to such a situation, she accuses Castor of never having loved her and inveighs against the cruelty of the gods, indifferent to their love. Their response is prompt: a terrible storm causes the young woman to faint, Jupiter appears from Olympus and decrees that the two brothers shall share immortality. Then he invites Castor, Pollux returned from Hades, and Telaira to watch a final divertisse ment before the Palace of Olympus amidst the stars, planets, the sun and the satellites, and the Twins are inducted into the Zodiac.
