REGION 2 SENSITIVE EVALUATION FORM

Species: ( flavescens)

Criteria Rank Rationale Literature Citations The species is found in all states of Region 2. • www.natureserve.org 1 C Distribution within R2 Confidence in Rank High

Great Plains and intermountain basins from Minnesota, North Dakota, southeastern • www.natureserve.org 2 C Wyoming, and eastern south to Arizona, northern Chihuahua, and northwestern Distribution outside R2 (Monk and Jones 1996).

Confidence in Rank High There is no information in the literature on the dispersal of this species • 3 D Dispersal Capability Confidence in Rank High

There is no abundance data for this species but it is likely common based upon state • 4 C rankings by Natural Heritage programs. Abundance in R2 Confidence in Rank Medium

The species is viewed as secure in , Nebraska, and South Dakota, vulnerable • www.natureserve.org 5 B in Kansas, and imperiled in Wyoming. However, there are no data to establish Population Trend in R2 population trends in Region 2. Perhaps the species is viewed as imperiled in Wyoming because its range in Wyoming is restricted to the extreme southeast corner of the state.

Confidence in Rank Medium Prefers sandy areas with shortgrass prairie. Recorded also from rocky, brushy ravine • 6 B slopes in extreme northwestern Oklahoma (Caire et al. 1989). Sleeping and birthing Habitat Trend in R2 occur in underground burrows. There is probably extensive shortgrass prairie habitat remaining but again no studies have been conducted specifically to ascertain the mouse’s habitat and the current status of that habitat.

Species: Plains pocket mouse (Perognathus flavescens)

Criteria Rank Rationale Literature Citations Grasslands continue to be converted to cropland but less so in the shortgrass region • 7 B of the Great Plains. Habitat Vulnerability or Confidence in Rank Medium Modification • 8 D Confidence in Rank High Life History and Demographics
