PASTORAL STAFF THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT Reverend Edward J. Quinlan In today’s Gospel, the dialogue between Jesus and a woman from Pastor Samaria is among the most lengthy and most theological found in Scripture. The most startling aspect of the conversation is that it happens at all. Jesus, an Reverend Matthew E. Cannon observant Jew of that time, was expected to avoid conversation with women in Parochial Vicar public. The animosity between the Jews and the Samaritans should have prevented the conversation as well. The woman herself alludes to the break from tradition: “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?” Yet Deacon Joseph J. Wrabel Jesus not only converses with the woman, he also asks to share her drinking Permanent Deacon vessel, an action that makes him unclean according to Jewish law. The high point of the conversation is when Jesus reveals himself to her Deacon Jerome T. Foerster as the Messiah. His answer to the Samaritan woman’s questions about worship Permanent Deacon is meant to predict a time when worshiping in truth and spirit will become the way to worship. MASSES After the conversation, the Samaritan woman becomes a disciple. Even Weekends: though she is an outcast and not a Jew, she returns to her town to lead others to Saturday Vigil5:00 p.m. Jesus and to wonder whether she has found the Messiah. The Samaritan Sunday8:00 a.m., 10:15 a.m., townspeople return with her to meet Jesus for themselves, and many are said to come to believe in him. 12:00 noon, 6:00 p.m. The significance of the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan Weekdays: woman has many levels. The first is personal: The woman is herself converted to (Weekday schedule subject to belief in Jesus as Messiah because he knows her sin but speaks with her just the change - please see inside bulletin) same. The second is social: Having come to know Jesus as the Messiah, the Mon-Thu.6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m. Samaritan woman becomes an evangelist to her own people. Friday..6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. The third level of the story is educational: Jesus uses his encounter with Saturday8:30 a.m. the Samaritan woman to teach his disciples that God’s mercy is without limit. The disciples return from their shopping quite confused to find Jesus talking with a CONFESSIONS Samaritan, and a woman at that! But the conversion of the Samaritan Saturday9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. townspeople is a foretaste of the kind of open community that will be created 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. among those who believe that Jesus is the Messiah. - Excerpted from Sunday Connection, Loyola Press Visit us on the web at www.HolyNameOfJesus.com/Parish Third Sunday of Lent March 15, 2020

2020 DIOCESAN ANNUAL CAMPAIGN “ROOTED IN FAITH” Bishop Gainer tells us that our love of God is demonstrated when we reach out in love and mercy to those in need. Each year we are asked to support the Diocesan Annual Campaign. Our priests want to reassure you that your gift to the Diocesan Annual Campaign will be used to support the many ministries and programs that receive funding through this effort. Please be aware that your gift WILL NOT be part of the recent bankruptcy proceedings. The Bishop selected “Rooted in Faith” as the theme of the 2020 Diocesan Annual Campaign, which reminds us that in giving to others our lives are greatly enriched. One program that will benefit from your generosity includes Catholic Education, where your donation will help educate over 10,000 students. Campus ministries, CCD programs, and our Seminarians will directly benefit from your financial support. Diocesan Evangelization supports Prison Ministry and Respect Life Programs. The Human Service Ministry helps families with Adoption, Foster Care, and Addiction Treatment Facilities. Other Charitable Works support food for the hungry and shelter for the homeless. Collectively, over 90 programs benefit from your generosity. While you may be uncertain about making a gift this year, I want to reassure you that your gift does have real impact and meaning. Our Diocese is committed to continuing the work of these important ministries and programs throughout Central PA. Holy Name of Jesus has been assessed $261,900 this year, the same amount as 2019. In recent years, our parish has been successful in completing the Diocesan Annual Campaign without relying on our general parish funds. As a result, more money has been available to meet our everyday budgeted expenses. We kindly ask that you match your gift from last year to help us meet this year’s goal. To help our parish budget for this assessment, we ask you to please make your pledge or donation during the season of Lent. We realize that many of you are financially supporting the Capital Campaign to improve the infrastructure of our campus. More than 10 years ago, we were in the midst of a six-year Capital Campaign to build our new church. Remarkably, we witnessed our parishioners supporting both of these programs simultaneously. We hope history repeats itself and you will remain committed to both of these important causes that will benefit your Church and Diocese. Many people in our Diocese are counting on your generosity. Our parish provides several methods for giving. Options include a single gift or a pledge to space your gift throughout the year. Additionally, you can make your gift or pledge on the Diocesan website using a credit or debit card. You even have the ability to donate stocks and bonds directly to the Diocese. Whatever method you select, be assured that 93% of your gift will be used to directly fund these charitable programs. This campaign DOES NOT fund individual parishes. It DOES NOT provide financial support for priests on administrative leave or legal settlements. Please be aware that any funds collected in excess of the goal will be returned to Holy Name of Jesus. In the past, our parish has shown that by working together, we can be successful in meeting all of our financial commitments. Thank you for your time and devotion to our parish.
