Chairwoman’s Corner  Gail Moxley

It’s hard to believe that the summer of 2018 is just about over and the last quarter of the year is nearly upon us. The Chamber still has many outstanding programs and events, designed to provide you with opportunities that will help strengthen your business, planned for the rest of the year. The 28th year of the Leadership Berkeley program will begin on September 18, 2018. This year’s class is listed on page 18. Special thanks go to our Leadership Berkeley major sponsors – Argos, Around the Panhandle Magazine, Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, and United Bank. Without the support of these businesses and organizations, this program would not be possible. One of our most popular events, the Tailgating Under the Stars Auction, is almost here and will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018, at The Purple Iris. We’ve already gotten some really fantastic auction items – WVU football game tickets, Wizards tickets, a week stay at a Bethany Beach house, bicycles, jewelry, electronics, gift baskets and much more. We can always use more silent auction items and would welcome your donations. The Tailgating Under the Stars Auction would not be possible without the generosity of our sponsors-- Argos, AT&T, Bechdel Jewelers, Kay Casto & Chaney PLLC, The Purple Iris, and Summit Community Bank. Special thanks also go out to Monte Conner of D&M DJ Service for emceeing this year’s auction. We still have a few tickets left – get them here -- this event sells out! You should have received your new 2018-2019 Membership Directory in the mail. If you would like more copies for your office feel free to stop by the Chamber office to pick them up or give the Chamber staff a call and they will deliver. We thank Marketing and Events Assistant Natalie Cline for her great work on this project and all of the many businesses and organizations who advertised in the directory. With campaigns heating up and Election Day coming up in November, we want to remind all of our members that our bylaws strictly prohibit us from supporting any candidates. Specifically, our bylaws state, “The Chamber shall be nonpartisan and nonsectarian, and shall not take part in or lend its influence or facilities, either directly or indirectly, to the nomination or election or appointment of any candidate for office in city, county, state, or nation, nor shall any meetings of a political nature whatsoever be held within the premises occupied by or under the control of the Chamber.”

Last, but not least, we want to mention that nominations are currently being accepted for Small and Large Business of the Year. These awards will be given at our 92nd Annual Dinner planned for Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at the Holiday Inn. We are also giving out a new award this year – Non Profit of the Year. Email Tina Combs at [email protected] if you would like more information on how to submit nominations for these awards. Other awards given that night include Business Person of the Year, Citizen of the Year, and Chamber Champion. Invitations will be in your mailboxes soon. Mark your calendars now and reserve your tickets. This event also sells out!

As always, we have a lot going on! For more information on upcoming events and programs, please do not hesitate to contact the Chamber office. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Modern Renovations, a premier roofing and renovation company, is a success story worth talking about. Owners Lar- ry Demarco and Shawn Wolford were both born right here in Martinsburg and grew up in the Eastern Panhandle. They both had similar life paths that led them to where they are today. Shawn is a Veteran and has a passion for building and remodeling. Larry has honed his skills working on exterior and interior renovation jobs for over 18 years.

They both worked together and kept getting frustrated with the lack of attention to detail provided by most contractors. They decided it was time to join forces and cre- ate a different kind of construction company. They decided to put the customer first and treat every house like it was their own. They took feedback from clients over the years and decided “We can be different”, “ We can treat every house like it’s my Mom’s”. As Larry Demarco says “Shoot straight, treat it like you live in it and tell your customer what’s happening and do the work for a fair price.” They have found immediate success. Those guiding principles have enabled this business to grow to the largest roofing company in the Tri-State Area, which was evidenced last year with the Beacon Lighthouse award. This honor is awarded yearly by Beacon Indus- tries and acknowledges the largest purchaser of roofing materials in the Panhandle. Modern Renovations was honored to receive this award for 2017 and was just informed that they are in line to receive this again for 2018. Modern Renovations has also been awarded the “BEST OF THE BEST AWARD” for roofing companies.

Shawn Wolford and Larry Demarco take giving back to the commu- nity seriously. As a matter of fact, it’s hard not to miss their logo around town as they sponsor many local events, teams and donate regularly to most local charities. “We want this community to be the best it can be. We love Martinsburg”, said Larry and Shawn.

The company specializes in roofing, siding, gutters and windows. When you drive around and see those shingles stacked on roofs you know Modern Renovations is right around the corner. The company has offices in Martinsburg and recent- ly expanded into Winchester, VA. With the opening of the new office on Valley Ave- nue, “Having the additional office allows us to be in town with our customers” says Shawn Wolford. The business is growing fast with a Maryland office opening in the next two months and expansion into Pennsylvania this year.

If you need roofing, siding or windows you need to visit mymodernrenovations.com or visit them on Facebook at Modern Renovations LLC. The reviews and feedback from customers is amazing. This company has 142 North Queen Street, Suite 108 definitely figured out how to provide top quality Martinsburg, WV 25401 service to its customers. (304) 596-1339 [email protected]
