Frank Thaheld and his wife of 10 years, Miriane, were traveling when they received the call from a neighbor that Poppet Flats was on fire. “We were seeing some of the coverage on television, but after the call, we decided to pack immediately and head for home,” Thaheld said, “but we weren’t able to get to our house. The road was closed.” The following day he accompanied a work crew up the Hill. “Our house was fine, but Twin Pines was a disaster. If the fire didn’t burn the house, it burned everything around it up to the front door.” In addition to the many homes lost to the fire, Thaheld knows a lot of folk who lost outbuildings, motorhomes, vehicles and equipment. One neighbor had moved his motorhome from his garage to an area on the edge of his property where it burned to the ground. His actions likely saved his home. Had it remained inside the garage, an explosion from the motorhomes’ gas-filled tanks could have destroyed his entire home. Once back on his property, Thaheld stayed the entire time, “I went around to people’s homes trying to find out if everyone was OK. I tried to do as much as I could. Anybody that was up there pitched in to help. They are all good people.” Asked about other residents that elected to stay after the evacuation order, Thaheld said “many people could The skeleton of a motorhome the Silver Fire destroyed.
