1. Co ntinued publication of monthly e-newsletter “Voice of Senior Citizens”. 2. Completed “Basic Literacy Class for Older Persons” (BLCOP) of ward no. 10, Budhanilkantha m unicipality.

3. Started replication of the programme in ward no. 11 Budhanilkantha municipality.

4. Started development and testing of Text Book for BLCOP course.

5. Continued partner ship with HelpAge International, p articularly on: (a) Entitled to the Same Rights (b) World Health Day 2017 and (c) World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2017. 6. Continued providing Ageing Research Fellowshi p (ARF) for 3 Master’s Level students with support from Ageing Switzerland. 7. Participated in Preparatory Regional Expert Meeting: Third Regional Review of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, 14 – 15 June 2017, Bangkok. 8. Distributed school dress in partnership with Karna Jyanti Foundation to the neo-learners of Basic Literacy Class for Older Persons, Kapan 11, Kathmandu.

9. Observed International Day for Older Persons (IDOP) 2017 in two districts (Khotang and

Okhaldunga) with support from Embassy of Switzerland in Nepal.

10. Started “Monthly Discussion Forum on Ageing” (MDFA) - A common platform for sharing knowledge on ageing issues on 29th November 2017. The forum is organized every last Friday of a month by Ag eing Nepal with support from National Senior Citizens Fund and Manchuka Foundation.

11. Observed Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC) 2017. 12. Conducted a seven days Training for Nurses on Geriatric Care with support from Ageing Nepal Switzerland. 13. Obtained membership on HelpAge Global Network.

Age Friendly Policy Gorkhapatra Daily Kathmandu, December 16, 2017 Representatives of different organizations suggested for age friendly policy in a Monthly Discussion Forum on Ageing (MDFA). The forum is organized every last Friday of a month by Ageing Nepal with support from National Senior Citizens Fund and Manchuka Foundation. Prof. Pushpa Kamal Subedi, PhD presented status of older people in Nepal, in the forum.

Mr. Ramkrishna Karmacharya, Chairperson of Senior Citizen Fund focused on free health insurance for elderly, interest free loan for economically active elderly, day care center in each ward and policy to promote positive attitude towards elderly. Similarly, Chairperson of Ageing Nepal, Mr. Krishna M. Gautam said, “We are ready to support and collaborate with the government for betterment of our elderly.”

Free Cataract Surgery Annapurana Post Daily Makwanpur, December 18, 2017 Five hundred people including older people of Makwanpur, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara and Parsa districts underwent free cataract surgery. Elderly seemed joyful after getting their eyesight back. The camp was organized by Hetuada Community Hospital with support from Til Ganga Eye Hospital, A New Vision, Operation Rejoice and Rotary Club 3301.

Artificial Teeth for Elderly Kantipur Daily Bajhang, December 26, 2017 Khaptad rural municipality banned liquor and imposed fine if someone is found drinking or selling alcohol in the village. The municipality aims to use thus raised fund for providing artificial teeth to the elderly. “We have collected 150,000 within three months and preparing to use it for elderly’s teeth” said Mr. Barka Rokaye, the municipality Chairperson.

SOCIAL SECURITY OAA Embezzled Gorkhapatra Daily Bajhang, December 27, 2017 Government’s investigation team found that Mishra Sunar of has been receiving old age allowance since eight years with fake document. The document contained same birth date of Mishra and her own mother. The villagers blamed local government for the carelessness. Mr. Bakra Rokaye, Chairperson of rural municipality said they are investigating further to appropriate action against the culprit.

Difficulty in Receiving OAA Gorkhapatra Daily Dang, December 29, 2017 Older persons of Deukhuri of Dang district expressed their difficulties in receiving old age allowance (OAA). The elderly have to travel long distance and queue for hours in bank. Reshma Rawot is blind and also disable who came to receive OAA with her sister. She is just an example. So, they requested for distribution of OAA through local level government.

ACTIVE AGEING Brave Elderly Annapurna Daily Lalitpur, December 3, 2017 Courageous elderly of Lalitpur district casted vote though a bomb blasted early in the morning of Election Day and two bombs were found near the polling center. Betimaya Shahi, 90; Narbahadur Napit, 85; Kumari Karki, 90; Sabitri Acharya, 80 are some of many elderly voters who casted vote.

Septuagenarian in Politics The Himalayan Times , December 4, 2017 Daman Nath Dhungana, 76, of Bhaktapur district sought votes in second phase of election saying that he has a ‘broom to sweep the dirt’ in politics. Elderly in Clean-Up Campaign Gorkhapatra Daily Kathmandu, December 24, 2017 Elderly above 80 years old actively participated in clean-up campaign organized in the capital, Kathmandu. Among all, Mr. Somnath Dhungana, 102, is the oldest campaigner in the group. “Their participation in mid-winter motivate youths” said Mr. Lok Bahadur Tandan, young campaigner.

Grandparents Day Annapurna Daily Kathmandu, December 24, 2017 Grandparents Day was observed for the first in Nepal. Triton International Secondary School celebrated the day by organizing an event. More than 100 grandparents of students participated in the event. The students entertained their grandparents by dancing and singing. On the event, Mr. Madan Shiwakoti, President at Consumer Committee; Mr. Binodbihari Pokhrel, Principle of the school; Mr. Rajan Subedi, Director and Ms. Mamta Shah, Vice Principle gave speech on importance of grandparents.

EMERGENCY Nonagenarian Filed Case against a District Judge Gorkhapatra Daily Kathmandu, December 12, 2017 Ashamaya Gorkhali Shrestha, 92, Kathmandu filed a case against a district judge for unfair judgment made a year ago. The court had transferred her land to Narautambabu Shrestha which she thinks was illegal. The case is under consideration.

Fake Promises of Candidates Gorkhapatra Daily Rupandehi, December 5, 2017 Pujari Tharu, 75, of Butwal, complained on fake promises made by election candidates. One of many unsatisfied elderly, Mr. Pujari said, “I have been casting vote since long. Candidate come and request for vote promising development of the village. But we are still compelled to live in dark as there is no electricity in the village.”

Helpless Elderlies Nagarik Daily Khotang, December 26, 2017 Many elderly of Khotang district are compelled to live miserable life due to family fragmentation after their children migrate abroad for better opportunities. Bisnaa Pariyar, 72, is taking care of her two grandchildren after death of her son in abroad and daughter in law eloped. Similarly, Devi Dhakal, 64, is also responsible for her two grandchildren after her son and daughter in law remarried with others. Now, the poor grandmothers are struggling hard for rearing their grandchildren. They are only example of such many cases in Khotang district.
