VERDICT: CASH-IN CRASHES OUT Film one foxy let down

KATH & KIMDERELLA (PG) Director: Ted Emery (The Craic) Starring: , , , Peter Rowsthorn, , Richard E. Grant Reviewer: Leigh Paatsch ##

IT HAS been a while since glass-half-full wonder wom- an Kath Day-Knight (Jane Turner) and her glass-fully- empty nightmare of a daugh- ter Kim (Gina Riley) reigned supreme as queens of Aust- ralian comedy. So it would be fair to as- sume that to strike up the friendship with fans yet again, Kath & Kimderella would be moving heaven and earth to wow one and all. Far from it, I’m afraid. Everything about Kath & Kimderella smacks of a cheap (and often, rather cheerless) cash-in: a final rifle through the pockets of those who watched all the shows, bought all the DVDs and still quote all the catchphrases. Early doors, the movie coasts along likeably enough, mainly because of all the ain’t-it-great-to-have-’em- back? goodwill in the room. But, the novelty value of seeing the foxy bogan combo taking their suburban high- jinks to sophisticated Europe wears off very, very quickly. By yanking Kath and Kim Gina Riley is not-so-pretty in pink with Jane Turner in a scene from Kath and Kimderella off their tacky-go-lucky home turf, Turner and Riley have We’ve always laughed weak, sketch-driven plot (also on board are Glenn Rob- as a shifty monarch with de- he is expressing what many made a major miscalculation along with them because with painful parallels to the bins as Kel, aka Mr Kath, and signs on Kath. in the audience are feeling. as screenwriters. they belong so completely to Cinderella fairytale does not Peter Rowsthorn as Brett, British recruit Richard E.
