  • Prospecting Guide Information Introduction Do You Need a Permit
Prospecting Guide Information Introduction Prospecting typically involves the use of metal detectors, hand tools, pans or sluices in the search for gold, gemstones and other minerals. Prospecting can be an exciting experience. Many of the world’s largest gold nuggets have been found in the Golden Triangle of central Victoria. Elsewhere, gemstone fossickers have found sapphires, zeolites and agate. This leaflet, prepared by Parks Victoria, the Prospectors and Miners Association of Victoria (PMAV), Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and the Victorian Gem Clubs Association (VGCA), is designed to help you enjoy this experience while protecting the natural environment and our cultural heritage. Do you need a permit to prospect? Yes, it is called a Miner’s Right. A Miner’s Right is a permit for prospecting in Victoria and must be carried at all times while you are prospecting. The only exception is if you are part of an organised group prospecting under the authority of a valid Tourist Fossicking Authority. The Mineral Resources Development Act 1990 sets out the rights and obligations of the holder of a Miner’s Right. Important points of the Act include that you must not: • Enter onto private property without the permission of the landowner. • Prospect on a current Mining Licence without the permission of the licence holder. • Use any equipment for excavation on the land, other than hand tools. • Use explosives. • Remove or damage any shrubs or trees. • Disturb, destroy, interfere with or endanger an archaeological site or Aboriginal place or object. In addition: • You must repair any damage to the land arising out of the search.

These goldfields (McIntyres-Rheola-Orville) spread out along the north- south road between Kingower and Mt. Moliagul ... originally opened by diggers from Korong soon after the discovery of gold at Moliagul at the end of 1852. Kingower Diggings began in the spring of 1853, but what became known as McIntyre’s Wet Diggings, about seven miles south of Kingower, was almost certainly opened before this, and a newspaper note in April 1853 read “A large number of diggers at McIntyre’s, are said to be doing tolerably well”. A notice in The Melbourne Herald in 22 July 1854 said “Parties are doing well at McIntyre’s Two Mile Hut, about seven miles from here (Kingower), on Moliagul Road. These are the “Old McIntyre Diggings”, very wet, with a granite bottom and requiring chain pumps”.

  • Read Josephine Winter's Transcript Here
Regional Echoes Mountains by Josephine Winter In the distance here in Central Victoria, in every direction, there are hills and mountains. Some as bare and as brown as baked loaves, some woolly with blue-green forest. Many of these are volcanoes – dormant, it seems, not extinct. Turns out there’s no such thing as an extinct volcano, not entirely. Even from a long way away, most of the ones around here are distinct enough to navigate by: the two distinct humps of mounts Buninyong and Warrenheip point the way to Ballarat, from anywhere in the district, and even beyond: they come into view even as you drive back up from the coast. Easily seen from here are the Pyrenees ranges, the very start of the Great Dividing Range and the vista that greets anyone who looks out of my Grandmother’s kitchen window. These mountains waver blue-green in the hot summer sun, and sometimes sleep under a dusting of snow in the wintertime, and their heights and crevices are home to waterfalls, to eagles’ nests and to secret, hidden valleys of rare native orchids. When I see the Pyrenees I’m reminded of my Granny, and of the large slice of my young life I was lucky enough to spend visiting with her and the rest of my large family, in a house where there was always something in the pot for anyone who came along around dinner time, and a warm fire and a cup of tea not far away. Down the road at Clunes, you can easily spot Mount Beckworth by its “lollipop tree” – a cypress pine over a century old, planted at the end of the first world war, then used for bombing practice by the RAAF during world war two.
