Objectives and Final Agenda

Objectives

One year ahead of the 6 th International Wildland Fire Conference (IWFC-6) (Pyeongchang, Gangwon, Korea, 12-16 October 2015), members of the UNISDR Wildland Fire Advisory Group (WFAG), the International Fire Aviation Working Group (IFAWG), the IWFC-6 International Liaison Committee (ILC) and the South Korea Conference Organizing Committee (SKCOC) will meet to discuss the roadmap 2014-2015.

On the first day the groups will be briefed on the outcomes and the follow-up of the UNECE/FAO Regional Forum on Cross-boundary Fire Management (UN Geneva, 28-29 November 2013: http://www.fire.uni- freiburg.de/intro/team.html ), based on a draft report to be circulated one month before the meeting. Regional networks and international organizations will provide their views or report on the status, projects or strategic plans for enhancing transboundary cooperation in fire management.

The ILC and the SKCOC will meet on the second day and continue the preparation of the IWFC-6. Members of WFAG and IFAWG are invited to attend and provide suggestions from regions and international organizations for themes to be addressed by the 6 th International Wildland Fire Conference.

The IFAWG will meet on 27 June 2014 and discuss the final draft of the International Fire Aviation Guidelines for presentation and discussion of its international application and dissemination at the joint meetings. An additional meeting of participants of the project "Fire Management in Protected Areas and Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites" (Council of Europe) will also be held on 27 June 2014.

Format of Meetings The joint meetings are a set of business meetings in which mainly strategic papers will be presented, discussed and prepared for adoption. GFMC will ask selected participants for oral statements / presentations.

Venue

The meetings will be held at and around the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC). The meetings on Friday (the workshop "Fire Management in Protected Areas and Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites" and the IFAWG meeting) and the joint meetings on Saturday / Sunday will be held in the Lecture Hall of Building No. 5 of Freiburg University Airport Campus, Freiburg. The business meeting / round table of the Regional Wildland Fire Network will be held in the GFMC building.

In order to locate the meeting venue please see the map below or click on the website of the Campus. Buildings No. 5 is located opposite the local (green “H” on the left side of the map). GFMC is located in buildings No. 11 and 12.

Travel instructions to reach Freiburg University Airport Campus :

Directions via local train: The University Campus is located at the airport and can be reached by local train (approx. 3 minutes). The train departs every 30 minutes from Freiburg "Hauptbahnhof" (Main Station) from platform 5 (please verify!) in direction "". Exit the train at the stop "Neue Messe / Universität". Building No. 5 is very close to the train stop (50 m). Recommended departure times: See agenda (above).

Weather Forecast and Dress Code: The weather around end of June may bring mid-day temperatures between 28 and 30°C. There may be a temperature drop in the evenings – so please bring a sweater / pullover. The meeting venue is the same large room as in 2012, pleasant atmosphere and non-cooling air conditioning. Dress code: Convenient and casual clothing. Since most of you know each other we shall not follow tight dress code rules.

9 Directions by car (coming from the freeway "")

Exit "Freiburg Mitte" and drive in direction city center. Take the third exit (at road sign "ADAC- Prüfzentrum") and turn left at the first traffic light, which leads into the "Berliner Allee". Now go straight until the road leads beneath a railway bridge. Turn left at first traffic light after passing beneath the railway bridge and enter the University Campus. Look for signs "Feuerökologie – 075" or "Global Fire Monitoring Center".

Arrival by air

Arriving at : Please follow the sign “Long Distance Trains”. Tickets are easy to buy at the airport railway station. There are new additional ticket counters as you will be passing through the “tube” towards the platforms (at arriving on your right hand side). Seat reservation in advance is not necessary when arriving on Thursday. In case of arriving Friday 28 June 2014 you may wish to buy a seat reservation. For the return trip this can be done at the Freiburg station, showing the return ticket purchased in Frankfurt Airport. A seat reservation costs € 4.50 per trip.

Arriving at Airport : Please leave after baggage claim through the exit “FRANCE” ( do not leave through the exit “SWITZERLAND”). Ask for the Airport bus to Freiburg.

Arriving at Zurich Airport : There are train connections from Zurich Airport Railway Station to Freiburg (via Zurich Main Station and / or Basel) departing every full hour plus 4, 13 and 43 minutes respectively. Average travel time is between 2 and 2.5 hours.

10 Accommodation

The GFMC has a contract with special rates in three hotels conveniently located close to Freiburg Central Railway Station (“Hauptbahnhof”). All participants have been booked by GFMC in Hotels BARBARA, MIBNERVA and PARK HOTEL POST.

Registration Fee

A registration fee of € 100.00 will be due and used for logistics. A receipt will be issued. Participants sponsored by GFMC and ITTO will be reimbursed through the travel claim. The registration fee for ILC members will be covered by the U.S. Forest Service. See also column “registration fee” in the attendance list.

Internet access

All hotels provide free internet access in your rooms. On-site Campus a wireless internet access has been set up for the meeting rooms (Friday to Monday):

Local public transport

Hotels Minerva and Park Hotel Post provide cost-free tickets valid for all public transportation lines in Freiburg Region during the stay in the hotel. The tickets can be used for the very rapid S-Bahn shuttle connections between the "Hauptbahnhof" (main station) and the GFMC site (station "Neue Messe / Universität"), and for the ILC meeting on Monday to commute to the “House of Forest”. Please do not forget to ask for the free ticket!

Hotel Barbara does not provide the free ticket for local public transportation. We will purchase group tickets for those staying in Hotel Barbara for use starting Saturday morning.

Go straight ahead towards downtown, entering Eisenbahnstrasse for ca. 150 m and turn next street to the left where you will find Hotel Barbara. Free internet available in all rooms.

Hotel Minerva ( http://www.minerva-freiburg.de/ ) is a similar Hotel located 50 m down from Hotel Barbara (see above) in Poststrasse No. 8 (Tel: +49-761-386490, locally dial 386490 only; Fax: +49-761-3864944). Arriving at the Central Station by rail or by airport shuttle bus (from Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport) please go to main exit of the station (50 m from arrival point of the Airport Shuttle. Go straight ahead towards downtown, entering Eisenbahnstrasse for ca. 150 m and turn next street to the left where you will find Hotel Minerva. The hotel provides a cost-free ticket valid for all public transportation lines in Freiburg Region during the stay in the hotel.
