World Autism Awareness Day In order to observe World Autisim Day ,on 2nd April 2011 Special Olympics Bharat – Goa organized a swim for Autistic children the nine year old autistic, Master Malya Samant a Special Athlete studying at Lourdes Convent High School Saligao-Goa, swam across the Mandovi river to mark the World Autism Awareness Day to accompany him along with normal swimmers Master Abraham Fernandes, Miss. Abigail D’costa and Miss. Vinela Olenga Dias. Later they were felicitated at the customs Jetty by the chief Guest Mr.Yatin Parekh, Mayor of Corporation of the City of Panjim, Mr. Tony Dias Deputy Commissioner of Customs, and Mr. Makija Pinto C.C.P.Councilor, Joint Director Mr.Eugenio Cardoso. Dy Director of Sports Authority of Goa.

These athletes had beeen trained by SAG coaches at Peddem swimming pool in Mapusa. The swim with a difference was organized by Special Olympics Bharat with a sole objective of creating awareness on the need of society to encourage children with autism.

Earlier, Mr. Victor R. Vaz, National Sports Director Special Olympics Bharat had welcomed the guest and Mr. Luis Fernandes Sports Director Special Olympics Goa, had proposed the vote of thanks.

FELECITATION OF OUR GOAN ATHLETES & COACHES ON 7TH JUNE 2011. :

The send off function was organized for the Special athletes of Goa who were participating at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

The Chief Guest for the function was Honourable Chief Minister of Goa, Mr. Digamber Kamat and the Guest of Honour was Executive Director of Sports Authority of Goa Mr. V.M. Prabhu Desai. The other dignitaries present were Mr. Jovito lopes and Mr. Mukesh Saglani Trustee of Gujarati Samaj. The athletes and coaches were felicitated in the presence of their parents and school representatives.

Speaking on the occassion the Honourable Chief Minister said that it is the duty of the Govt. to ensure that the Special Athletes participating in sports should get due support from the Government. He also remarked that Special Olympics – Goa has been performing excellently in sports and the Govt. will ensure that the Sports Authority should render full support.

The Executive Director of Sports ensured all co-operation required by Special Olympics – Goa. He further, mentioned that the Govt. of Goa had sanctioned the Air Travel from Goa to Delhi for the athletes participating at the 2011 World Summer Games. The Special Olympics – Goa Website was also launched at the hands of the Chief Minister of Goa.

Mr. Anoop Trehon sponsored kitbags to all the athletes and coaches. After the sendoff the athletes were given snacks and they all went happily home.

4TH PREPARATORY CAMP AT DELHI FROM 9TH – 19TH JUNE 2011.

The 4th Preparatory camp for the World Summer Games was held at Delhi from 9th – 19th June 2011. In this camp we had special athletes from Goa selected to attend the camp. The Total number of athletes and coaches for the camp was 232 out of which 184 were special athletes and 48 coaches from the 24 states of India. Special Olympics Goa had 13 special athletes and 4 coaches .

The athletes underwent a training program in their respective games. After this camp they departed for Athens, Greece on the 20th of June 2011.the athletes were given a warm send of f in the presence of the Greece Ambassabor Mr. Konstantinos Moatsos in Delhi.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD SUMMER GAMES WAS HELD IN ATHENS-GREECE FROM 20TH JUNE 2011 TO 5TH JULY 2011.

India participated in the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games which was held in Athens-Greece from 20th June to 5th July 2011.

The Indian contingent had comprised to 231 which includes 184 athletes (101 Male & 83 Female) 48 coaches (31 Male coaches & 17 Female coaches) Asst. H.O.D’s. and H.O.D.

The Indian contingent was selected by the Special Olympics Bharat Selection committee and had special athletes from 28 states of India i.e. Assam, Karnataka, Bihar, Goa-, Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, West Bengal and participated in 12 sports discipline being Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, basketball, Bocce, Cycling, Football (Soccer), Handball Powerlifting, Roller-skating, Table-Tennis and Volleyball.

The athletes and coaches were identified at the National Championship held in different states. Thereafter they had undergone 3 Preparatory Camps and based on their performances, was selected for the India squad.

The Goa athletes have been drawn from six institutions namely Keshav Seva Sadhana’s, Bicholim, Disha Charitable Trust – Panjim, St. Xavier’s Academy – Old Goa, Lokvishwas Prathisthan – Ponda, Gujarati Samaj – Margao and Daddy’s Home – Margao.

The selected Athletes and coaches had undergone an intensive coaching at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi from the 9th to 19th June 2011, They left India on 20th June 2011 and arrived Athens on the same day , so as to participate in the Host Town programme from the 20- 24th June which is basically to acclimitize the participants with the host town conditions. They then participated in the Games from 24th June to 5th July 2011.

The team representing India at 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games have proven themselves again by bringing back 244 (78 Gold, 73 Silver and 92 Bronze) medals for the country. A total delegation of 182 athletes, 48 coaches and 4 officials from 24 states of India represented the country.

Air Marshal Keelor, Chairman, said, “Our athletes are getting recognition and support at Indian and World Stage which showcases the change of environment for the disabled.” The Special Olympics Goa team received a major boost through the support from The Sports Authority of Goa, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.

14 Special Athletes, 4 Coaches from Special Olympics – Goa were the part of the Indian Team which participated at the 2011 World Summer Games. The Goan athletes won 6 Gold, 5 Silver and 7 Bronze in the various sports category. The names of the Medal Winners are as follows.:-

Besides sports events special youth also participated in various special events like Global Youth Summit, Family Forum, Healthy Athletes, Screening Global Law Enforcement, Torch Run, Opening and Closing Ceremony.

During a week long competition, these athletes had to display their athletic skill, with determination & courage. The other Special Olympic athletes not competing in the World Games had played an important role in the leadership of the sports field as officials and assistant coaches.

Warm Welcome to all our Special Athletes & Coaches :

All special athletes and coaches were given a warm welcome at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.

On the 8th of July the Sports Authority of Goa invited the Special Olympic Team for a felicitation function. The Sports Authority of Goa assured a sum of Rs.5,00,000.00 (Gold), Rs.3,00,000.00 (Silver) Rs.2,00,000.00 (Bronze), Participation Rs. 50,000.00 Coaches Rs.50,000.00 (Gold) Rs. 30,000.00 (Silver) & Rs. 15,000 (Bronze). Respectively.

Refreshments were provided to all.

ORIENTATION PROGRAM ON S.O. BEGINER’S

On the 27th of August 2011 the Trainees from all the respective instituitions arrived at our Special Olympics office at around 8:00 a.m. in the morning. Inspite of the heavy shower’s the attendance was cent percent. Instituitions like Keshav Seva Sadhana’s -Bicholim, Disha - Panjim, Gujarati Samaj- Margao, Atmavishwas School – Pernem, Daddy’s Home - Margao, Chubby Cheeks - Porvorim, SFAL-Panjim, Lokvishwas - Ponda, Lokvishwas - Canacona, Holy Cross - Siolim, Jyot School - Margao, Fairyland Special school – Goa-Velha, Anand Niketan - Mapusa, & Don Bosco School – Panjim, had participated in the Orientation Program. In all there were 16 trainer’s and 6 Resource persons, Mr. Victor Vaz, Mr. Luis Fernandes, Mr. Mahadev Shinde, Mr. Dinesh Satarkar, Ms. Oswy Rebello & Mr. Premanand Naik. The program started at 9:00 O’clock. The Guest of honour Mr. Jovito Lopes, Sports Editor, Heraldo, was given a warm welcome. Mr. Victor Vaz, National Director, presented a bouquet of flowers to him. Mr. Jovito Lopes had given a short speech. While speaking on the occasion the chief guest Mr. Jovito emphasized that the trainees should be committed to the movement. He also said that the trainees need to think outside box, in order to serve the athletes. Mr. Victor Vaz had a Brief talk on the Introduction & General Orientation of Special Olympics. Etc.

The Trainees & the Resource Persons were provided with breakfast. We had 15 minutes morning break and the next session started at 10:15 a.m. wherein Mr. Dinesh Satarkar explained about the Definition of Intellectual Disability. Identifying persons with an Intellectual Disability.

Mr. Premanand Naik, conducted an ice- breaker wherein all the traineess had a hearty laugh and enjoyed themselves and he also conducted an orientation on how to plan a training program. They all had enjoyed his session. Mr. Mahadev Shinde had his talk on Coaching Athletes in Special Olympics. How to coach and teach basic sport skills, levels of instruction and expanding our coaching knowledge. He also spoke about Special Olympic coaches who are responsible for providing athletes with comprehensive sport training and preparation for multilevel sport competition.

We had lunch break, then the next session started wherein Mr. Victor Vaz explained about S.O. Divisioning & Mr. Luis Fernandes explained on how to plan a training session . He said that there should be medical information on each athlete at every practice, there should be warm-up and stretching , skills instruction etc. and to conduct a training session as well.

Ms. Oswy Rebello gave a talk on sports safety i.e. in case of Injury, how to take preventive measures, Negligence, Legal responsibilities, Risk, etc. Mr. Victor Vaz spoke about Coach education system and the next steps for coaches Q & A Session evaluation. Mr. Victor Vaz informed them that every coach should train 10 more coaches. After the session was over, Mr. Victor Vaz & Mr. Luis Fernandes distributed the certificates to all the participants who had attended the program.They all had a wonderful experience and enjoyed it at the same time.

NCC BADMINTON & TABLE-TENNIS :

NCC Badminton & Table-Tennis was held at Shree Kanteerava Stadium, Karnataka, Bangalore from 23rd to 28th August. 7(Seven ) States from the South West Region i.e. Andhara Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Pondicherry & Tamilnadu, participated Total 382 participants i.e. 254 athletes, 109 Coaches & 19 Resource persons., out of which Our Goan team had sent 14 athletes & 4 Coaches in Badminton and 14 athletes and 2 coaches in Table-Tennis. (Total 34)

The Camp was inaugurated by the Olympian, SOB Trustee and Tata Steel Co. Advisor, Mr. Satish Pillai, followed by flag hosting and March past.

The morning session started with Warm-up & Stretching before they could start the Games. All the coaches had to appear on the ground with proper sports dress including sports shoes. The teams had to carry with them badminton & TT Rackets.

The coaches were called for the meeting about the discussion on the week’s program and was given a training program on various rules & regulations on badminton & table-tennis., responsibilities of S.O. Coach, etc.

The Healthy Athlete Program ( HAP), was conducted during the camp. The Healthy Athlete Program was inaugurated and sponsored by Lt. General Mathew Mamman (Retd). All the special athletes had to carry their medical certificates and also indicate the type of medicines being taken during any emergency.

Cultural Programme was organized by SOB-Karnataka , such as dancing, singing, magic show etc.They all had a wonderfull time during the program.

GMS (GAMES MANAGEMENT SYSTEM) The Games Management System(GMS) was held from 18th to 22nd August 2011. at Pondicherry Engg. College,Pondicherry. Program Manager from all states from South & West region had to attend the Pondicherry GMS Camp. This Training Camp was to introduce GMS for a large number of

coaches/volunteers/Program manager. All the participants had to have basic computer knowledge. Trainees could carry their own laptops, so that it might help them to have better training. 4 (Four) of our Goan Coaches/Teachers i.e. Ms. Priya Kudalkar, Satish Varak, Rupesh Kadekar & Vera Dias were present for the camp. They all had found the training very interesting. All the participants were awarded certificates.

NCC ROLLER-SKATING

On the 12th to the 18th of September 2011 National Coaching Camp Roller-Skating was held At BHEL –R.C. Puram, Andhra-Pradesh, Hyderabad. Total 6 States had participated in the camp, i.e. Altogether 345 athletes & 55 coaches participated out of which our Goan Team had 5 athletes & 3 Coaches. The chief Guest for the inauguaral function was Mr. Reddy.

As usual they had a session on warm-up & stretching. After the warming-up the coaches had to teach the special athletes how to roller-skate. .According to the host state all the athletes had to carry their own skates, helmet, Knee guards hand gloves etc for their safety.

The accommodation given to all the campers was good they had simple vegetarian food, breakfast etc. and they all had a wonderfull time.

MYAS (MINISTRY OF YOUTH AFFAIRS & SPORTS)

The Fifth MYAS (ACTP) camp was conducted at LNUPE, Gwalior from the 19th – 23rd September 2011. The resource persons arrived at LNUPE on 18 Sep 2011,. Later in the evening the resource persons met the trainees. All the trainees present were introduced to the resource person and they were briefed in short for the day’s program regarding the ground rules, their responsibilities, Implementation plan for new scheme for the persons with disabilities,financial support, Estimate budget for community, District & State Games, theory class on unified sports,S.O orientation & divisioning, session on planning and executing a competition etc. There were 124 trainees from different states of India who attended this training camp. out of which 2 (Two) of our Goan Coaches/Teachers i.e. Ms. Samantha D’costa and Mr. Satish Varak were present. Retired Major General Mr S.S. Pawar the Vice Chancellor of LNUPE honoured the chair of the Chief Guest for the function.

There were different resource person to give valuable knowledge about different Games. When the Physical Education Lecturer’s from LNUPE College – Gwalior gave the basic rules of different event, later all the Resource Person from Special Olympics Bharat gave the modified rules of the same event.

The chief guest for the closing ceremony was Retired Major Genral S.S. Pawar Vice Chancellor, LNUPE, Gwalior. The other dignitaries on the dais were Prof. L.N.Sarkar. Prof. Ghai Director PYKKA

Mr Virender Kumar presented a brief report on the course. The chief guest spoke about the importance of the course. He admired and lauded the effort being put by Special Olympics Bharat.

One of the participants shared his experience about this training program. All the participants were awarded a certificate by the chief guest. The Vote of thanks was given by retd. Major General S.S. Pawar from LNUPE.

NATIONAL COACHING CAMP - :

Special Olympics Bharat-Goa had attended the National Coaching Camp at St. John Convent in Chandigarh, UT from 25th Sept. to 1st Oct. 2011. Out of 31 accredited Indian states 15 states were called in Phase-1 camp i.e. Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Goa Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Pondicherry, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal. There were more than 400 campers in the camp. All the Area Directors, National Sports’s Director’s and the Principal from St. John School alongwith the Resource persons were also present for the same. 14 athletes & 7 coaches from our Goan contingent had participated in the camp.

NCC HANDBALL : The South West Region Coaching Camp - Handball was organized by Special Olympics Bharat – Maharashtra, which was held at Andheri Sports Complex, Mumbai from 8th to 14th Nov.2011. 5 (Five) States had participated for the same. Total campers were altogether 200. Among which our Goa contingent had a Team of 14 athletes and 4 coaches.

In this National Coaching Camp Handball the full team of athletes, coaches and HOD’s were trained together individually and as a team. Special stress was placed on fitness for which special diet was provided to all.

Medical team was available at the training Session, wherein all the special athletes were given a thorough check-up.

All the camper’s had a very good accommodation, lovely food, breakfast etc. and got to know each other.

ACTP (ADVANCE COACHES TRAINING PROGRAM) SOFTBALL..

The Advance Coaches Training Program was held at Andheri Sports Complex, Andheri, Mumbai from 8-14th November 2011. Total 6 (Six) States i.e. Andhra Pradesh, Goa Kerala, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, & Maharashtra had participated for the same. Total campers were 25 i.e. 21 trainees & 4 Resource persons from different states, Goa had a team of 5 Trainees & 2 Resource Persons.

The aim of this ACTP Camp is to prepare the Indian team of athletes & coaches for participating in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in USA 2015

The Resource Persons were Mr. Victor Vaz, Ms. Sulekha Rana, Mr. Nagare, Mr. Vishant &Mr. Premanand

Overall Special Olympics is intend for Special athletes to experience the highest quality training and competition possible. The Trainees were given the tasks or elements required to perform a skill. They were all ready to train the athletes for competition according to the rules and guidelines of the sport.

All the campers were provided with Breakfast and simple vegetarian food.

NCC ATHLETICS National Coaching Camp Athletics was held at Andhra Pradesh from 11-17th December 2011. The States which participated were Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Pondicherry, and Andhra Pradesh with 395 special athletes and 105 coaches.

The Chief Guest for the orientation program was the Secretary and the Treasurer of Special Olympics Bharat – Andhra Pradesh. Twenty-six athletes (16 Male & 10 Female) with 7 coaches were from our Goan contingent. The athletes & coaches stayed at Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh. The food was well served.

The Resource persons conducted practical sessions in aquatics and in athletics. The coaches were given a chance to put their knowledge and skill test by conducting the practicals with the special athletes. Medical camp was held for all the athletes too.

REPORT ON FRIENDLY MATCH BETWEEN INDIA XI V/S ZAMBIA TEAM

On the 29th November 2011, Goa Football Association continued celebrating its Golden Jubilee and was happy to invite the Special Athletes and Coaches of Special Olympics Bharat-Goa again for the match at 3:45pm between Zambia Team v/s India XI at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Fatorda- Goa.

The Special Schools that participated in the event on short notice were Daddy’s Home(Margao), School for Appropriate Learning(Panaji), Lokvishwas Ponda, Sanjay School(Porvorim), and other Individuals. The total no. of athletes and coaches were 120.

Before the match refreshments were provided by Special Olympics Goa and then during the break time refreshments were provided by GFA to all the special athletes and coaches. There was a live music performance for the spectators.

There were important guest present to give away trophies to the winnig team, the President of GFA Mr. Shrivnas V. Dempo, the Vice -President Mr. Elvis Gomes, Chief Guest Mr. Remo Fernandes, Mr. Brahamanand Shankvalkar, Mr. Bruno Coutinho and Mr. Armando Colaco. The Athletes and the coaches enjoyed themselves alot by cheering up the Indian Team and the Visiting team. The Vice – President of GFA, Mr. Elvis Gomes visited the special athletes and coaches and thanked the Special Olympics Bharat – Goa for attending the event.The event was concluded with the prize distribution.

The Special Schools that participated in the event were Vidya Vikas(Margao), Daddy’s Home(Margao), Peace Heaven(Caranzalem) School for Appropriate Learning(Panaji), Holy Cross(Siolim), Fairyland(Goa Velha),Lokvishwas Ponda and Quepem, Chubby Cheek(Porvorim)), Sanjay School(Porvorim), St. Xavier’s Academy(Old Goa) and other Individuals. The total no. of athletes were 115 and coaches were 37.

Before the match refreshments were provided by Special Olympics Goa and then during the break time refreshments were provided by GFA to all the special athletes and coaches. There was a live music performance for the spectators.

Night with the Sports Stars:

The Diocesan Youth Centre organized a felicitation programme Called the “Night of the Sports Stars” on the 25th January, 2012 at the Fr. Agnel’s School Educational Complex, Pilar at 5.00pm under the leadership of Fr. Olavo Caiado, Director, DYC.

The Christian Professional football team namely Hallelujah FC from Korea was visiting Goa from the 21st to 26th January 2012. The team was being felicitated at the hands of Archbishop of Goa Most Rev. Filipe Neri Ferrao. The special athletes from Goa namely Joseph Rodrigues, Meneeni Rodrigues and Inace Cruz who participated at the 2011 World Summer Special Olympics at Athens in football were felicitated at the hands of the Korean Team and so were many other sports persons like Coaches, administrators, journalist etc were felicitated. The Archbishop of Goa said “ I am pleased with the performance of all the sports persons and also the special athletes who are doing a tremendous job at National and International level”

Mr. Victor Vaz was presented a momento at the hands of the Archbishop of Goa for his service and dedication to Special Olympics.

The Special athletes from the School for appropriate Learning performed a dance for all present and the gathering appreciated the performance with a huge round of applause. The Hallelujah FC team performed a mime and dance on gospel songs to spread the Word of God through Sports. Jestes Antony from Chennai did a solo performance with juggling the football and the celebrity of Genuis Book of record Mr. Radhey Sham gave an exciting show by breaking the eggs and trying to improve his own previous performance. Snacks and refreshments were given to all participants present there.

Report on The Community Coaches Training Program The Community Coaches Training Program was held on 5th and 6th January 2012, at Don Bosco B.P.Ed college, Panjim – Goa. The program started at 9 o clock with registration and teMr.Victor Vaz spoke about Special Olympics, the MYAS Scheme Program,Types of Disabilities, Orientation and the heart of Special Olympics – Divisioning and also introduced his office team Mrs. Sybil D’Souza( Assistant Area Director), Ms. Priya Kudalkar(Project Manager) and Ms. Samatha D’Costa(Sports Manager). Ms. Samantha D’Costa spoke about Sports safety. Activities was taken up by Mr. Abhay Goankar. Lunch was served to the coaches. There were a total of 60 coaches. Of which 28 students were from the B.P.Ed section. And the remaining coaches/ teachers were from the North and South Goa Special schools. The community coaches handbook and the PEC cards manual was given along with other stationary and the MYAS Scheme T- Shirt to the coaches. Dr. Marie Raj, the Principal of Don Bosco College was kind enough to visit the program for a short while. In appreciation to this, Mr. Victor Vaz presented a T- shirt to Dr. Marie Raj as a token of gratitude. He then distributed the certificates after a short tea break and the program ended.

NCC HANDBALL: Special Olympics Bharat – Goa participated in the National Coaching Camp Handball which was held at Pondicherry from 28th January to 2nd February 2012. In all there were Five (5) states from the South west Region who had participated i.e. Karnataka, Goa, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh & Mangalore. The total number of athletes were 46 including Male & Female. STATE GAMES - BADMINTON

The 5th All Goa Special Olympics Badminton Tournament for the intellectually disabled was held at Multipurpose Hall, Sanquelim on 4th February from 9:00 to 5:30 p.m. KeshavSeva Sadhana School, Bicholim, one of the Special Schools hosted this event.

14 schools had participated in this event i.e. Disha- Panaji, Lokvishwas-Quepem, SFAL – Panaji, Lokvishwas-Ponda, VidyaVikas Academy-Margao, Gujarati Samaj-Margao, Daddy’s Home-Margao, Atmavishwas – Pernem, Ashadeep-Mormugao, KeshavsSevaSadhana, Valpoi, KeshavSevaSadhana – Bicholim,AnandNiketan, Mapusa, Peace Heaven-Caranzalem, & Sanjay School-Porvoim. Alltogether there were 101 athletes and 40 coaches.

The Chief Guest for the function was Mr. NavnathVatthe, Associate Vice President of Sesa Vedanta, The Guest of Honour was, Mr. Varanya Phadte, a responsible member of Rotract, Bicholim & Mrs. Antenio Pinto, Sports Officer of Bicholim Taluka. The winners were presented with Medals and certificates.

Keshav Seva Sadhana’s School-Bicholim, Goa, had provided the participants and officials with breakfast & lunch.

Report on the NCC Floor Hockey:

On the 5th February 2012, the first preparatory camp for floor Hockey was held at the High Altitude Training Institute at Shilaroo-Shimla. Goa was among the 18 states that participated in the selection camp for the World Winter Games to be held at South Korea in the year 2013.

On the first day registration was done. On the 6th and 7th of February 2012, Team Skill Assessment was taken of all the states dividing them into 3 groups. Due the bad weather the whole event could not be organized the way it was planned.

The following Special Athletes and coaches participated in the event:

Aviraj(SFAL), Marian(Ashadeep), Prakesh(Lokvishwas-Ponda), Deeptisha(SFAL), Pooja(Keshav-Seva), and Valencia(Gujarati Samaj). Mr. Carlton Gomez, Mr. Umesh, Mrs. Deepa Zamble, Mrs. Sharmila Ghosh and Ms. Samantha D’costa(Special Olympics).

The accomadation was well organized. The food provided was excellent. The host gave the special athletes scarf and muffler for all the 18states. Mrs Malika Nada was also present at the camp. The resource persons were Thomas, Deepak walia, Dr. Sunil Dharma and Rashimdhar Sood, Ms. Sulekha rana was handling GMS, Ms. Samantha D’costa (Office Staff SOB Goa) and Mr.Ashwin (Office Staff SOB Himachal).

National Games

The First National Games for Persons with Disabilities was organized by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai from the 17th to 22nd February 2012. Special Olympics Bharat – Goa and other disabilities from the Goa chapter participated in Athletics, Football, Bocce and Badminton and emerged victorious in winning a total tally of 34 medals. The theme for the National Games was ABILITIES 2010-2011.

A total of 27 states in India participated in this event ( 856 Athletes, 213 coaches and 39 Officials). Among these state, Goa contingent were the proud winners of the following:

 In Special Olympics Bharat – Goa won 12 gold, 10 silver, 3 bronze and 4th place  In Paralympics committee of India – Goa won 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze  In the All India Sports Council for Deaf – Goa won 4 silver and 2 bronze and Two 4th place. The athletes were accompanied by the officials viz Mr. satish Varak (Daddy’s Home), Ms. Varsha naik (ashadeep,) Mr., Mahdev Shinde (Gujarati Samaj), Ms. Pooja Naik ( Vidya Vikas), Vishant Priolkar (Lokvishwas), Ms. Priya Kudalker and Ms. Samantha D’Costa (Special Olympics Bharat-Goa).

The Special Olympics soccer team faired well and bagged a gold medal in the Division 2 category. In the league matches played, Goa defeated West Bengal and Delhi to emerge winners. So also in Badminton, Tyla Coutinho and Valino Fernandes had an eaasy win over their opponents winning gold in singles as well as doubles. In athletics 100mts, Gauresh Kamble bagged a gold, so did Jovito Cardozo in Bocce singles. In the wheel chair 100mts Paralympics event- Mahesh Pagadale secured a gold.

Advance Coaches Trainer’s Program - Regional Trainer’s

The Advance coaches Training was held in Goa from the 9th to 13th March 2012 to certify Regional Trainers.

Each of the states that participated sent two representatives for the certification course. On the 9thmorning registration of the trainees began at the Youth Hostel, Miramar,Goa followed by Lunch and then the inaugural function at Sports Authority of Goa conference hall. The comparer Ms. Samantha D’Costa welcomed every one present and then requested Mr. Victor Vaz to introduce the dignitaries on the dais:

PrabhuDessai and Mr.Anant Josh ibyAyub from J&K and Sarah from Mizoram respectively. Mr. V.M. PrabhuDessai welcomed the audience to Goa and called the trainees his friends and encouraged them to strive better. Ms. Samantha D’Costa thanked the Sports Authority of Goa for the facilities extended and the Youth hostel for its hospitality. On behalf of Special Olympics Ms.Samantha thanked the guest ,trainees and wished them all the best. Trainees were provided with writing pads, pen and a full document on how to make presentations etc.

Dr. Nagarajan started with presentations on coaches education system and planning a training system. Later in the evening trainees did presentation on topics provide by the resource persons.

Atthe break of dawn, football practical’s started on SAG Campal ground. Mr. Khurram divided the trainees into three groups, so that each group would get to learn the individual skill tests i.e

 Dribbling  Shooting  Run and Kick.  This was followed by a 5 a side mock games For the theory session, trainees made a presentation on the topics allotted to them. Dr. John Nagarajan and Mr. Victor Vaz spoke on Divisioning. The sports Director, Mr Luis Fernandes spoke on Code of Conduct. Football practical session was held at the ground in the evening.

On Sunday, athletics practical session was conducted by Mr. Tiwari, Mr.Donnet and Dr. John Nagarajan. Mr. Tiwari gave the basic knowledge on Relay, Mr. Donnet on standing long jump and running long jump and Dr. John on Shot Put and how to throw the put at true Parabola. The GMS session was led by Mr.Virender Kumar. GMS 6 was given to the trainees to get updated with a more complex based data entry than the one currently used by Special Olympics. The trainees learned how to install GMS and use it.

The trainees got glimpses of Goa in the evening. The Special Olympics Goa organized a fun trip to Old Goa and Calangute beach. On the 12th, the trainees got a chance to put their knowledge and skills to test by organizing a Local Athletic Meet for the Special Athletes from a special school. The planning was done a day prior with a low cut budget. The athletic meet was conducted to give the trainees hands on experience. Starting from Opening ceremony, to the events and the medals ceremony.At the end of the event Snacks and Lunch packets were served to the special athletes.

The participants from Goa who participated at the National Games for all disabilities held at Chennai were felicitated at the hands of Dr. John Nagarajan who presented the medals and certificates .later the athletes were given Tea and refreshments at the stadium.

Mr.Vaz introduced to the trainees the resource person, Mr.Jovito Lopes, Sports Editor for the daily O Heraldo and a certified expert in First Aid. He spoke about the basics in First aid and gave demonstration on how to give CPR. Mr. Jovito was kind enough to give a lecture on breathing techniques and how to write a press report.

The accommodation as well as meals at the youth hostel was appreciated by all the participants.

On the concluding day, the chief guest for the programme was Mr.Anant Joshi who also presented the Certificates to the participants. He was happy to have such a well behaved guests in the hostel .As a token of appreciation Special Olympics Goa gave the participants the photograph of the participants and a cashew nuts packet. Mr.Vaz introduced to the trainees the resource person, Mr.Jovito Lopes, Sports Editor for the daily O Heraldo and a certified expert in First Aid. He spoke about the basics in First aid and gave demonstration on how to give CPR. Mr. Jovito was kind enough to give a lecture on breathing techniques and how to write a press report.

The accommodation as well as meals at the youth hostel was appreciated by all the participants.

On the concluding day, the chief guest for the programme was Mr.Anant Joshi who also presented the Certificates to the participants. He was happy to have such a well behaved guests in the hostel .As a token of appreciation Special Olympics Goa gave the participants the photograph of the participants and a cashew nuts packet. DISTRICT GAMES

HELD ON THE 21st TO 24th MARCH 2012,

AT THE CAMPAL GROUNDS.

Games for all Disabilities under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt of India was held on the 21st March to 24th March 2012 for the North District at SAG and Campal grounds. Around 500 athletes and coaches participated from the different federations Special Olympics, Deaflympics and Paralympics respectively in five different sports discipline viz athletics, Bocce, Badminton, Football and Table tennis. These event was organized by Special Olympics Bharat, who is the Nodal Agency and under the Leadership of Mr. Victor Vaz, National Sports Director of Special Olympics Bharat and Area Director of Special Olympics Goa. Mr. Hilary Fernandes, a Sports Enthusiast and an industrialist was the Chief Guest and the other dignitaries Mr. Anthony Froyes (Business man), and Mr.Kamat (KeshavSeva) were present for the games. The chief guest and other dignitaries saluted the athletes during the march past. As a goodwill gesture Mr. ParshuramPhadte presented a bouquet to the chief guest. Mr Fernandes declared the Games open. There were 100 officials officiating all the different sports . The athletes and coaches were provided morning breakfast , snacks ,evening tea and lunch Packets. Certificates and medals were distributed to the winners and participants on the concluding day .

2012 STATES GAMES FOR ALL DISABILITIES HELD ON31ST TO 3rd APRIL 2012. Special Olympics Bharat –goa conducted states games for all disabilities for North Goa district from the 31st March to 3rd April 2012 .under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports,around 400 athletes and coaches from different federation participated in these events at Campal Ground Panaji– Goa. The events conducted for different federation was Athletics, Badminton, Bocce, Football and Table Tennis.

Mr. Victor Vaz, the National Director of Special Olympics Bharat and also the Area Director of Goa escorted and welcomed the Chief Guest Dr. Rufino Monteiro, Chairman of Goa State Football Development Council. The march past was led by the Special Olympics Bharat followed by PCI and AISCD.

Mr. Victor Vaz introduced the Chief Guest Dr.RufinoMonteiroand as a gesture of appreciation Ms. Maria Rego special Athlete presented a bouquet and a memento. The chief guest addressed the athletes, “Its nice to see the children coming forward to participate. Participation is more important than winning” these were the words of experience and inspiration delivered to theand special athletes.

Athletics, bocce, and Football was held on the Campal ground while Badminton and TT at the indoor Complex.

Mr. Victor Vaz thanked the chief guest, the officials Mr.Kamat, Mr Milton, Mr. Bharat Vast, Mr. Sharma, Mr. Vishant Priolkar, Ms. Varsha Naik and the schools and individuals who participated in these games and to make it a success. Report on Fire Service Day On the 14th April 2012, Fire Service Day was celebrated all over Goa with great pomp road races and fire drill display were organised in every city of Goa.This year the Directorate of Fire Services organized 21kms marathon race , and the Special Olympics – Goa was invited to participate in the event .

The marathon race was flag off from the campus of the Directorate of Fire Services St. Inez and proceeded towards , BalBhavan, Miramar Circle, Dona Paula, Goa University, Hotel Vernekar and returned back on the same route.

The following Special Olympics athletes participated in the marathon.

 Swapnil Naik  Saiesh Naik Lokwishvas (Ponda)  Sarvesh Kerkar  Parshuram Phadte - St.Xavier’s Academy  Manoj Kamat - School for Appropriate Learning.

Besides the special athletes there were around 200athletes from the Police, Military and the civilians who participated in this great event

Mr.ParshuramPhadte won the first place with a timing of 2 hours timing. Later at the prize distribution ceremony Mr.ParshuramPhadte was give a cash award by the Chief Guest, the Hon. Chief Minister of Goa Mr.ManoharParrikar and Chairperson of the Corporation of Panjim, Mrs.V.Naik

Media persons from Goa In news channel interviewed our Special Athletes and asked them how they felt to participate in this event. Our athletes were well looked after by the organisers and refreshments were provided to all the participants .
