Mayor’s Message

Hard to believe but November is finally here. I love November because I’m a hunter and this is often the month I get out the most. But I know for some it’s a hard month. This is often the time of year when we finally get a preview of the coming winter’s teeth. Let’s hope we ease into winter this year. A few things. This month I have put on the agenda to really start putting the strategic plan into place. We need to start the planning process regarding what we will do and how we will do it before the spring comes. Because much of the thrust of our plan is to spruce up our Municipality and get it looking better, that’s where at least a good portion of our effort will focus. But it won’t be easy. Doing the necessary work without spending money we don’t have will be a challenge. But, if the work of Council was easy there would not be a need to have elect- ed officials in the first place. If you have any ideas for helping improve the upkeep of our Municipality without spending much or any money, I, for one, would welcome them. This fall seems to have a trend of change over within the ranks of employees and volunteers within the Munici- pality. Ron Gillis has decided to step down from Machin Housing Supervisor. We wish him well and thank him for his service. Mike Emms has taken a job in another Municipality near Midland to be near family. We will miss him at the water plant and for his expertise in other areas of the Municipality. We also wish him the best at his new position. Shawna Alberts has the qualifications to run the Vermilion Bay Water Plant and has moved into that position after Council did interviews with all the qualified applicants putting their names forward. This has left a vacancy in the housing and assistant water plant manager position. Garry Parkes has stepped down as chair of the Housing Committee and many thanks goes out to his contribu- tion to that Committee. That’s it right now. We hope to have the positions filled and running smoothly as soon as possible. I’d also like to thank Alita Babcock for her volunteer work stretching back 11 years on the Housing Commit- tee. It’s really a thankless job for the most part, done during quiet meetings in the evening with other volunteers and representatives from the Community. Thanks to you Alita and all of you that give up your time to help. There was a request in for me to comment on the progress of the Municipal offices moving into the school. Council has decided to shelve the project for now and wait and see what happens based on election outcomes in the next year, public comments that were wary of the process, and the simple fact we have a number of options to weigh and we are in no rush. So, for now we are not pursuing the project and we will work on other options - as well as this one- in the future. There were simply too many loose ends and tight timelines for us to proceed. That’s it. Enjoy November in the best place in the world to live.

Keep fire safety in mind as temperatures drop!

The volunteers at Machin Fire Department are urging everyone to keep fire safety in mind as the temperatures turn colder. There are some simple things people can do to stay fire safe during the colder months: Have all fuel-burning appliances inspected annually by a registered fuel contractor. Go to COSafety.ca to find a contractor near you.  Keep chimneys and intake/exhaust vents for furnaces and heating appliances free of debris, ice and snow ac- cumulations to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) build-up from inefficient combustion.  Burn dry, well-seasoned wood in fireplaces and woodstoves to reduce the risk of excessive creosote build-up in chimneys.  Allow ashes from your fireplace or woodstove to cool before emptying them into a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Keep the container outside.  Keep space heaters at least one metre (3 feet) away from anything that can burn, including curtains, uphol- stery and clothing.  Replace worn or damaged electrical wires and connections on vehicles and extension cords and use the prop- er gauge extension cord for vehicle block heaters.  Consider using approved timers for vehicle block heaters rather than leaving heaters on all night.  Ensure that vehicles are not left running inside any garage or building.  Ensure there is a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of your home. Install CO alarms to alert you to the presence of this deadly gas.

The Ontario Fire Code requires smoke alarms to be installed on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms are required outside all sleeping areas if the home has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage. For apartment buildings with a service room, carbon monoxide alarms must be installed in the service room and adjacent to each sleeping area of all units above, below and beside the service room. And if the building has an attached garage, carbon monoxide alarms must be installed adjacent to each sleeping area of all units above, below and beside the garage. In order for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to do their job, they need to have working batteries. Once a year, old batteries should be replaced with new batteries. When you change your clocks on November 5, take the time to install new batteries in all alarms. Machin Messenger—Page 4

The CPR Holiday Train will be stopping in Machin on Saturday December 2nd, 2017 at the Vermilion Bay crossing on Bay Street down by the water- front. The train is scheduled to arrive around 1:00 p.m. for a half hour show. Watch for posters in late November confirming the time and the entertainment. Dress warmly and please bring a donation of non-perishable food items or money for “Helping Hands”, who will be on hand serving hot chocolate to help keep us warm waiting for the Holiday Train. Please come out and show your support for both “Helping Hands” and the Holiday Train. Come catch the Holiday Spirit!

MACHIN AREA HELPING HANDS Do you or someone you know need a little extra help this Christmas? We provide food hampers for singles, couples and families who are struggling in our area. All information is strictly confidential. We will also be working with the Dryden Christmas Cheer Board to ensure each household only receives one hamper. You can fill out an application form or call 216-4853 if you require any assistance with complet- ing the application and we will take your information over the phone.

 Activities include coordinating the annual CP Holiday Train event – serving hot chocolate and gathering food and monetary donations  Picking up donations of non-perishable food items from our generous community members and organizations, shopping for non- perishable food donations, clothes, toys etc.  Wrapping gifts  Putting Christmas hampers and Thinking of You baskets together for the families and coordinating delivery  Responsible for financial information (bank reconciliation, deposits etc.)

The family of the late GRAHAM CALVERT would like to express their sincere thanks to all who supported the family through this tough time. We would like to thank Dr. Gagnon and staff at the Machin Medical Clinic, Dr. Cortens and the staff at the DRHC for the care given to Graham in the last few years. Special thanks to Bob and Kayla at Community Funeral Home, to Pastor Wayne and Harry Toews for the special service, to Eagle Lake First Nation for the food trays sent to the viewing, Dryden Native Friendship Centre for the equipment and snacks, to the Community of Eagle River for the lunch, sup- plied and served by volunteers, which was greatly appreciated. The Vermilion Bay Kinsmen installed 2 new members on Friday the 13th! We welcome Ken Kushner and Ken Canan

On October 20th and 21st, local Kinsmen and Kinettes went to the Travelodge East in Winnipeg for Fall Leadership. it was well attended by District 2 members. Executive Director of Kin Canada Grant Ferron came from Cambridge and Past National President James Doerr also attended.

Debbie Kruger the National Awards & Recognition Commit- tee and also Vermilion Bay Kinette did a presentation on awards.

Locally Kenora Kinsmen Travis Sokolyk did a short presentation on the District Convention in June in Kenora.

Past Deputy Governor Shauntelle Pihulak Dryden Kinette received her plaque for Outstanding Zone for her great work last year.

The Vermilion Bay Kinsmen received Certificate of Achieve- ment for membership growth.
