BYU in the MPSF Tournament Since 1993, BYU has qualified for the MPSF postseason tournament in 14 of 15 seasons, including 13 consecutive trips. The Cougars’ all-time record in the MPSF tourna- ment is 19-14. BYU has won the MPSF tournament three times and holds an 11-6 record in the first round, 5-5 record in the semifinals and 3-2 record in tournament finals. The Cougars won consecutive MPSF tournament championships in 2003 and 2004. Last season, the Cougars fell to UCSB in the first round and did not advance.

BYU in the NCAA Tournament The Cougars have made four NCAA tournament appearances in the program’s history. Impressively, BYU has brought home the hardware in three of its four NCAA tourna- ment appearances. The Cougars boast a 7-1 overall record in NCAA tournament play and a perfect 4-0 record in national semifinal matches. The Cougars only loss in the NCAA tournament was in 2003 when they lost to Lewis in a five-game thriller. BYU has earned automatic bids to the Final Four by winning the MPSF tournament three times: 1999, 2003 and 2004.

All-Americans Since 1993, 2 different players have earned All-America 40 citations, 15 of which are first-team honors and 14 of which are second-team honors. Most recently, Andrew Stewart and Futi Tavana received honors in 2010 and Taylor Sander, Robb Stowell and Tavana received them in 2011.

Home Court Advantage BYU finished its 2011 season with a 10-1 record at the Smith Fieldhouse, facing teams like No. 5 UCLA and No. 4 Long Beach State. The Cougars have only lost 10 home matches dating back to the 2006 season. national team connection Four current members of the men’s volleyball team also played with either the Junior National Team or Youth National Team before joining the BYU squad. Joe Kauliakamoa and Russell Lavaja played with the Junior National Team before joining BYU in 2008 and current freshman Taylor Sander also played with the Junior National Team before this season began. Freshman Taylor Sander was named the MPSF Freshman of the Year, finishing the season with 341 kills, 684 total attempts, a team-high 41 service aces, 120 digs and 73 total blocks. Sander’s impact was evident in every AVCA DIVISION I-II matche he played in. COACHES POLL (FINAL) The Cougars finished 20-8, defeating tough teams like No. 4 UCSB, No. 5 UCLA and taking the then-No. 1 USC ranK SCHOOL 1 Ohio State to five sets in both meetings on the road. BYU was 10-1 at home and went 16-6 in league play. They started the 2 UCSB season out right with a 3-0 record and first-place finish at the 2011 Gaucho Invitational.
