Any one of these four magnificent performers would be worth the price of STANDING OVATION admission, but you will see all four on the same stage! $1,000 - $4,999 IMPRESARIO SOCIETY ENCORE This year would have marked the 100th birthday of Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, the great Frank Sinatra. So to celebrate that $500 - $999 centennial, we are bringing you Sinatra Forever, direct from Las Vegas. Hear those great big band songs that provided the PERFORMANCE backdrop to one of the most famous voices in the industry with a man who sounds for all the world like Sinatra himself, Rick $250 - $499 Michel. And, as you will see, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra is back by popular demand with Duke Ellington’s Concert of Sacred OVERTURE Music as our closer to the College’s annual celebration of Black History Month. $100 - $249 AUDIENCE One of my favorite moments since the Wentz Concert Hall has opened was the ending of David Benoit’s performance with $25 - $99 The Young Naperville Singers in the choral balcony. They had just finished a classic Christmas song when they all rang out with “Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown!” That was it! I was so excited to see this live! Well, David is back again this Holiday Season. We also have two performances of the Canadian Brass with its holiday show, something I have been trying to book since we started bringing shows to you. And how about one of, if not the greatest flamenco troupes in the world, Compañia Flamenca José Porcel! The best of the best in the greatest performing arts facilities in the area. HEAR WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT And that’s just the beginning of what North Central College has to offer. Combine that with the greatest staff, the most generous sponsors and Friends of the Arts and, of course, the greatest audiences we could hope for, and we once again have something truly special to bring to you this season. We hope to see you frequently throughout the coming months. Welcome back and enjoy! WENTZ CONCERT HALL Brian Lynch “What a beautiful, beautiful room. • Anthony J. Kosar*
Time Theories and Music Conference Ionian University/ Corfu, 27-29 April 2012 Proceedings ed. by Panos Vlagopoulos Ionian University - Department of Music Studies Corfu, 2013 2012 Corfu Time and Music Conference Proceedings Anthony J. Kosar* The Time of Contemporary Country Music Narrative has always been an important feature of country western music in the United States. In their book You Wrote My Life: Lyrical Themes in Country Music, Richard Peterson and Melton McClaurin state: “Among the recurrent elements of country songs is a strong sense of the narrative. For this reason, country music has often been called a story teller’s medium, and most of those familiar with the music, fans and scholars alike, would agree that country songs generally tell stories.”1 In the words of country music legend Hank Williams, “a song ain’t nothin’ in the world but a story just wrote with music to it.”2 My interest is the narrative time in these musical stories. Not all country songs employ narrative, but those that do are usually written in a verse/chorus form. [See Example 1.] This form, also found in numerous popular songs, alternates a verse—a section with fixed melody and harmony but with changing text—and a chorus—a section with fixed melody and harmony but with static or nearly static text. The verses tell the story and the chorus reflects on the plot.
