Mr. Diament made the straightforward point that ask- ing Orthodox groups to take a position contradictory to the Torah’s teachings and codified halachah—and implying, as the philanthropist did, that their refusal to do so renders them unworthy of Jewish communal funds—encroaches on Orthodox Jews’ religious liberty.

A Hindu who venerates cows cannot compel the government to include bovine- slaughter in the definition of murder.

Rabbi Ellenson doubts Mr. Diament’s sincerity in invoking that principle and challenges him to prove his commitment to religious liberty by supporting legislation that would permit those “whose religious beliefs mandate us to perform same-sex religious weddings sanctioned by the government . . . to exercise our own religious conscience.” The challenge is eloquent and passionate. Unfortunately, though, it is based on an erro- neous notion of religious liberty. A Reform or Conservative rabbi can opt to convert a non- Jew in a non-halachic manner, or to join in matrimony two men or two women, without fear of interference from Orthodox Jews or others. Orthodox Jews have their own religious right, of course, to con- sider a conversion invalid or a couple unmarried (and to freely say so), but no one interferes with the choices of the other. That is religious liberty. Rabbi Ellenson, however, takes things a good deal farther, asserting that the religious rights of non-Orthodox Jewish clergy are violated because they are “proscribed from perform- ing [same-sex] religious unions with state sanction.” Note well those last three words; they broadcast his error. The right to practice one’s reli- gion is one thing; insisting that the government sanction one’s particular religious beliefs, quite another. No one is sug- gesting interference with any American clergyperson’s reli- gious endorsement of whatever unions he or she sees fit to con-

If such become newly dis- covered religious mandates—as performing same-sex marriages has apparently become for Rabbi Ellenson—well, as they say, it’s a free country. Americans’ definition of marriage for secular legal pur- poses, however, is expressed through the body politic’s col- lective will. The resultant defi- nition may seem constraining or disconcerting to some, and, for their own religious purpos- es, they are welcome to a more expansive take. But marriage in the eyes of secular law—con- stitutionally removed from the dictates of any individual faith—need not honor any reli- gious group’s particular choice of definition. Take an example far removed from marriage: A reli- gious Hindu who venerates cows has every right to protect the animals in his possession from all harm. But he cannot compel the government to include bovine-slaughter in the definition of murder. And were he to suggest that a fellow citi- zen’s commitment to religious freedom requires him to sup- port a Redefinition of Murder Act, most of us (even most Reform rabbis, I suspect) would politely disagree. Which is precisely what Orthodox groups like Agudath Israel and the Orthodox Union do with regard to contempo- rary efforts to redefine mar- riage. Orthodox opposition to changing the legal meaning of matrimony in order to suit the zeitgeist is not intended to, and does not, limit anyone’s reli- gious rights. It is, moreover, a principled and deeply Jewish stance, based firmly on Judaism’s teachings since Sinai. And so, asking an Orthodox Jew to join an effort to redefine marriage in a way that offends his beliefs, and that places the state’s imprimatur on whatever union a nontraditional clergy- man may decide his religious beliefs mandate, is unfair. Seeking, similarly, to com- pel Jews who cherish Jewish teachings to do things like hire teachers—role models no less than information-imparters— who openly flout the Jewish religious tradition is, simply put, an attempt at religious coercion. And that is so whether the attempt takes the form of threatening to with- hold funds from Orthodox institutions, or the guise of an erroneous conception of “reli- gious liberty.” O

He adds that he feels that first and foremost the Obama administration needs to respect Israel’s democracy and the fact that the majority of Israelis do not favor extreme concessions to the Palestinians. Danon concedes that Netanyahu has to walk a virtual diplo- matic tightrope when dealing with the U.S., in particular when it comes to the prime minister’s announced commit- ment to a two-state solution. Danon, who is in his first term in the Knesset, is certainly one of the Likud’s, and most likely one of the State of Israel’s, rising stars. He is young and energetic, and he is very much in demand to make appearances in front of American Jewish audiences, which seems to be a necessary ingredient in the formula of success for Israeli leaders. His presence on the Har HaBayit on Tishah B’Av (with a large secu- rity detail) and then at the Kotel to observe the national day of Jewish mourning is bound to enhance his status in parts of the Jewish world. On the other hand, although Michael Ben-Ari’s positions do not seem to differ that greatly from Mr. Danon’s, it seems that it is a matter of nuance and political branding that makes all the difference between them. While Danon looks like he is in a position for a long and illustri- ous political career, Ben-Ari’s may only be fleeting. When we met in Ben-Ari’s Knesset office, Prime Minister Netanyahu was in Washington and the Knesset member was plainly concerned. “The problem is that on the surface we know what Netanyahu feels, but we do not know what he is saying or promising to Mr. Obama,” he said. MK Ben-Ari complains that too much of the emphasis in the current fledgling peace process is on the needs of the Palestinians. “It’s like the entire process neglects the needs of the Jewish People as it pertains to the Land of Israel,” the MK says. He rhetorically asks why top 14 July 23, 2010 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES priority is not given to what the Jewish needs and requirements are in the Jewish State and why our leaders seem to be falling over themselves to some- how please the U.S. as it only relates to the needs of Palestinians. When talking with Michael Ben-Ari, the conversation inevitably seems to drift back to the direction of Rabbi Kahane. And Ben-Ari strongly feels that Kahane was seriously mistreated when he was in the Knesset and, overall, was dealt with by his colleagues with great injustice. “When Rabbi Kahane was in the Knesset, he was ignored by every- one; absolutely no one ever spoke to him,” he says. I asked him how he has been treated since joining the Knesset, to which he responded that it was a lit- tle better than the way his rabbi was treated, but not much better. Dr. Ben-Ari has petitioned Knesset Speaker Ruby Rivlin to allow him to commemorate the 15th yahrzeit of Rabbi Kahane this coming November with an address from the Knesset podi- um. So far Ben-Ari has not received a response to his request, but he is hope- ful that after all these years, and consid- ering the way in which he died, Rabbi Kahane will get a just and deserved memorial in the Knesset body that he did nevertheless serve in. The worst charge against Kahane throughout all those years was that he was a racist, that he detested and was bent on using violence to deal with them. The ironic aspect of all this is that if you realistically and objectively analyze the Arab side of even the current peace proposals that the Palestinians have placed on the table as their starting points for face-to-face negotiations, they sound very much like the positions that have in the past been projected as the Kahanist (and usually misunderstood) positions in order to achieve peace. First and foremost, the Palestinians continue to resort to violence, and very recently their President, Mahmoud Abbas, said at a conference of Arab lead- ers that if those countries want to go to war with Israel they would have the full support of the Palestinian people. When these so-called leaders are not talking about or indulging in war and other forms of violence, they are insistent that Jews wherever they live—Judea, Samaria, and East Jerusalem—must be evicted from their homes and moved elsewhere. Sounds like a piece of racist population transfer policy to me. Yet there is hardly a word of protest or objection from the UN or the Obama administration. If you will respond that Israel’s very existence is on land that is Palestinian land, then you are in the majority, of course, but also indulging in revisionist history. And that’s where Danny Danon and Michael Ben-Ari come together. That is, over the docu- mented history of the Jewish People and our relationship to the Land of Israel. If you are going to be honest and not indulge in diplomatically or politi- cally expedient positions, then there is no denying the connection between the Jews and biblical Israel. Both men are firm in their beliefs and convictions, committed to the truth and a safe and secure state in the eternal land of the Jewish People. And from there you will seek G-d your G-d, and you will find Him (Devarim 4:29) The Torah stresses that when you seek G-d from there, from your place of exile “among the nations,” you will find Him. For G-d is to be found everywhere, and every corner of His creation can serve as the vehicle to reach Him. If divine providence has dispatched you to a certain place and life, your surest path to Him is from there.

Salt can help remove the gritty dirt that comes with some fresh vegetables. When washing arugula, leeks, or spinach, you should trim them first, then place them in a bowl of lukewarm water. Add a tablespoon of kosher salt, gently shake the bowl so the water swishes around a little, and let the vegetables soak for 20 to 30 minutes. Transfer the vegetables to a colander then rinse them thoroughly with water. Salt is great on sweets like fruits and chocolates to draw out their sweetness. For meat, salt will force juices out of the meat and prevent it from browning. Wait to salt the meat until midway through the cooking process, then salt it lightly. Another option is to wait until cooking is complete, then salt the meat to taste. Adding 2 tablespoons of salt per pound to cooking water for pasta is a good idea. If you salt the water prior to boiling, it will take longer to boil.

Macadamia Brittle With Fleur De Sel

Ingredients: Other nuts can be substituted for other nut brittles. 1 cup unsalted macadamia nuts, toasted, chopped, cooled 1 Tbsp. chilled butter substitute, diced 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. fleur de sel or other coarse sea salt 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 2 Tbsp. light corn syrup

Directions: Place a large sheet of foil on the work surface and butter the foil. Combine nuts, butter substitute, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Stir sugar, water, and corn syrup in a medium saucepan over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Boil without stirring until syrup turns a deep amber color, brushing down sides of the pan with a wet pastry brush and swirling the pan occasionally, about 10 minutes. Remove caramel from heat. Immediately stir in nut mixture (caramel will bubble up). Pour caramel onto prepared foil; spread thinly. Cool brittle until hard; chop and serve.

Even if I want to do it, I am able to control my behavior, so the Torah can demand that I do so. But desire is something that dwells deep within a person. It is a function of the inner con- dition. I didn’t ask for desires, but they are here. How can the Torah command me not to want? The Even Ezra answers with a mashal. Imagine, he says, that a simple villager were to see a princess passing in a proces- sion. He may find her very beautiful, but he would never fantasize about marrying her. She is so far removed from his social status that the idea of actually taking her as a wife is out of the realm of the possi- ble. He wouldn’t even dream about it. If the idea would ever cross his mind, he would quickly rebuke himself, saying, “Am I insane? Do I dream about sprouting wings and flying?” So too, the Even Ezra explains, when a person understands that Hashem runs the world and sets forth the right woman for the right man, he will never desire that which isn’t his because he knows that it is impossible for him to have it. It is so impossible that it would be akin to a sane individual dreaming about growing wings and flying. I am not the villager. This Even Ezra is difficult to understand because it doesn’t seem that he has answered his question. It may well be that the peasant watching the parade fully understands that he can’t marry the princess, but that is because in his worldview, she is unattainable. My problem is that I don’t view the world that way. While perfect bitachon may be something that I aspire to, the reality is that I am just not there yet. I often forget that Hashem runs the world and that He controls everything in it. I live with the delusion that man determines the out- comes of situations. But that is who I am. Note: a grand- mother who does not visit on visiting day must pay the penal- ty by frequently writing letters. E-mails, which the camp accepts for the campers, won’t do! Oh no, that would be too easy! The kids want real mail. I detest letter writing and since the advent of e-mail I don’t believe I’ve written a single let- ter, other than a short condo- lence note or thank you note. But I was cornered. I chose to handwrite the letters on child- friendly stationery. I knew the kids would like that. Everything was in its cor- rect envelope. Each envelope was stamped. And all of it was left in the mailbox. And then it rained! My genius of a mailman obvi- ously never looked to see if there was mail waiting to be sent. He simply shoved every- thing into the box and never closed it. Need I say more? There’s no way to describe the mess that awaited me when I 34 July 23, 2010 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES went out to get my mail. Every check had to be made out again. I needed all new stamps and all new envelopes. My envelopes don’t have windows so I had to address everything. On top of that, my let- ters to my grandchildren were destroyed and had to be rewritten. But this time I used the computer to do it. My grandchil- dren will have to make do with a comput- er typed letter on plain white paper. Well, hey I signed it in my own hand so they at least saw my signature.

I am certain that I never went through a red light, but even I can’t argue with a camera.

But, thinking back on it, slugging is too good for this mailman. If I ever catch him he’s going to get an earful. Of course, if I make him too angry he may stop delivering my mail altogether. But, so strong is my need to let him know what’s on my mind that I may just take my chances. The man is aggravating me almost as much as my garbage collec- tors—this duo also loves to leave covers and lids open. There is a surefire guaran- tee that the next time I toss a bag of refuse into the bin it will plop down into the accumulated dirty rainwater and make a disgusting splash. But I won’t go on too much about my feelings of ill will for my sanitation crew because I’ve kvetched about them in this column before. Still, the only thing worse than wet mail is wet garbage! BY “MOSHE COHEN”

It is common knowledge that the impact of divorce is greatest on the children involved. Taking a family unit and dismantling it is traumatic. Many psychologists will tell you that chil- dren would prefer to have their par- ents unhappy and fighting than have them divorce. Recently it seems as if there have been more divorces in our community, both of couples married for a few years and those married for decades. In most cases there are children involved. There are certainly cases where one party is largely at fault, but in the majority of cases, both parties share the blame for the decline of the mar- riage to the point where one or both spouses want to end it.

One party perceives that agreeing to something equitable is tantamount to losing control.

Unfortunately, in the heat of battle, anger toward and hatred of one’s soon-to- be-ex-spouse blinds a person, and they do things that they would never want done to themselves. These are the very same people who, if not in the middle of divorce, would get up on a soapbox and lecture about this very topic. There is a reason that Chazal tell us that hatred makes that which is straight crooked, and anger is a most serious character flaw that causes one to sin. Chazal also teach us that Haman’s hatred for Mordechai totally consumed him and caused him to be completely irrational in his behavior. Is it rational that the man who was number two to the king of 127 countries would really care that one person like Mordechai didn’t bow down to him? Of course not, but his anger took over his life, causing him to be so focused on killing Mordechai and all his people, that, in the end, it was his undoing. Additionally, some individuals, who see their marriage ending, particularly if they were not the one to initiate it, feel the need to maintain whatever control they can. This need to control, com- bined with the aforementioned anger and hatred, results in such things as the custodial parent trying to keep the chil- dren away from the other parent or

This year, Rebbetzin Chanie Wolowik, director of programming at Chabad, decided to focus on healthy eating. With even more women coming than in previous years and a full lineup of expert cooks, this proved to be a hot topic. Rabbi Wolowik began the night with a casual discussion of Jewish law regarding supervision in restaurants and at home. He gave some eye-opening anecdotes of incidents he had experienced regarding misleading supervision—or lack thereof. Then Fifi Milloul, an integrative health and wellness counselor, board certified holistic health practitioner, AADP, and certified raw food teacher, talked about glorious greens. Fifi demonstrated a few ways to easily get these vital resources into our diet, including adding parsley puree to soups and salad dressing. For a healthful Nine Days pasta alternative, Fifi offered a nutrition-packed quinoa tabouli salad and pistachio basil crusted wild salmon. Fifi also warned of the dangers of mercury and farm raised fish. For those who would like to pursue a college degree, the yeshiva has formed a relationship with Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), a highly rated and respected university in NJ, whose degrees are recognized by most colleges and uni- versities nationwide. Many of the yeshiva alumni have successfully used their bach- elor’s from FDU to go on to various mas- ter’s programs including accounting, medicine, law, etc. As a result of this unique partnership, Yeshiva Ohel Dovid is able to give up to 72 credits for their Judaic studies program. FDU offers a choice of courses on the yeshiva’s campus so that the afternoon can be spent suc- cessfully studying towards a college degree. The courses that are given are clearly subjects that are not in conflict with a Torah life. The professors are all male, and the students are all frum boys. With diligence, the degree can be com- pleted in approximately one year! In summary, yeshiva Ohel Dovid aims to cater to the needs of the intelli- gent and competent young men who understand that in today’s world it is hardly possible to raise a family with- out a decent salary, and who are striv- ing to mesh the realities of today’s workforce with a strong connection to the Torah world. In this yeshi- va, when you’re learning, you’re learn- ing, when you’re working, you’re work- ing, and when you’re studying, you’re preparing for your future parnassah. Time is not wasted! The yeshi- va and its committed staff will not rest until each talmid is well on his way to achieving his goal of making a parnas- sah, all the while remaining a ben Torah. 64 July 23, 2010 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES

And you came near and stood under the mountain (Devarim 4:11) This teaches that G-d overturned the mountain upon them like an [inverted] cask, and said to them:“If you accept the Torah, fine; if not, there shall be your burial.” Rabbi Acha ben Yaakov observed: This resulted in a strong legal contest against the Torah (since it was a con- tract entered into under duress). Said Raba: But they re-accepted it (out of their own, uncompelled choice) in the days of Achashverosh, as it is written (Esther 9:27):“The Jews confirmed, and accepted”—on that occasion they confirmed what they had accepted long before.

(Talmud, Shabbos 88a)

And G-d commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and laws From here is derived that it is forbidden to receive payment for teaching Torah: just as I (Moshe) taught you the Torah free of charge, so, too, must you teach it for free.

(Talmud, Nedarim 37a)

There is none else beside Him (Devarim 4:35) Rabbi Binyamin Kletzker, a chassid of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, was a lum- ber merchant. One year, while he was adding up the annual accounts, he inadver- tently filled in under a col- umn of figures:TOTAL: Ein od milvado (“There is none else beside Him”). A fellow chassid admon- ished him for his absent- mindedness. “Don’t you know, Reb Binyamin, that everything has its time and place?” he admonished. “There’s a time for Chassidic philosophizing, and a time to engage in worldly matters. A person’s business dealings are also an important part of his service of the Al-mighty and must be properly attended to.” Said Rabbi Binyamin:“We consider it perfectly natural if, during prayer, one’s mind wanders off to the fair in Leipzig. So what’s so terri- ble if, when involved in business, an ‘alien thought’ regarding the oneness of G-d infiltrates the mind?” (Told by the Lubavitcher Rebbe)

However, despite opposition to the move, 46.8% of Palestinian Authority residents have indicated that they are for the postponement of elections until fur- ther notice. Hamas, which trounced Fatah in the 2006 parliamentary elections, has been growing more popular in the West Bank in recent months. In 2007, following Mahmoud Abbas’s refusal to acknowl- edge its newly formed cabinet, the group staged a coup, conquering the Gaza Strip and creating a split in the PA that contin- ues to this day. A recent poll conducted by Dr. Nabil Kukali for the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion indicated that Hamas enjoys a 41.3% approval rating in the West Bank. Fatah currently leads Hamas with a rating of 48.2%, but the Gaza-based Islamic movement is gaining fast with Palestinian confidence in its leadership having increased 18.7% since April. The rise, which Kukali said came “unexpectedly from the West Bank,” stems from Palestinian sentiments of sol- idarity with Gaza following the deaths of nine Turks aboard the Mavi Marmara, which was attempting to break Israel’s blockade of the coastal enclave. Senior sources in the current Fatah administration said that the deferral rep- resents a desire on the part of Abbas to revive reconciliation talks with Hamas. A statement by the PA Ministry of Local Government explained the delay as the response to demands by certain Arab nations and “friends in the world.” The measure is intended to “pave the way for a successful end to the siege on Gaza and for continued efforts at unity,” the PA announced.
