Joey Wells begins his second season at the helm of the Indiana State women’s basketball in 2015-16 and his fourth in Terre Haute joey overall. Wells was named the seventh head coach in program history on August 15, 2014 and led the Sycamores to a 17-13 overall record wells the 2014-15 season. He helped guide the Sycamores to tie its best non-conference record in program history, going 10-1 overall. The non-conference slate included wins over in-state Big 10 foe head coach | second season Indiana and a win over No. 25 St. John’s for the program’s first win since 2007.

A defensive minded coach, Wells has made it his trademark during his time with the Sycamores. Under his direction as head coach, the Sycamores once again posted positive marks, finishing 77th in the nation in points allowed per game (59.9) and 30th in turnover margin (+4.37). They also held the MVC’s top mark in steals (9.8 per game) and second ranked scoring defense to go along with the third best team performance in blocked shots (3.8 per game).

He has also made community services efforts a priority for the Lady Sycamores, as the team tallied 187 hours of volunteer work in 2014-15. Wells was the spearhead for instituting service efforts like the Sycamore Mile and weekly hours for the team at the 14th and Chestnut Community Center.

As the team’s defensive coordinator, Wells has improved the Sycamores in a variety of categories in just three season. Since his arrival, Wells has helped ISU post positive turnover margins in three straight seasons. He has also elevated the Sycamores in the MVC standings in points allowed per Wells Quick Hits game, field goal percentage defense and defensive rebound percentage. The team averaged 23 wins over his final two seasons there, including a 30-4 mark in 2006-2007.

Getting his start at the junior college level, Wells spent time as the head coach of Howard (TX) Junior College (2000-02) and Ranger (TX) Junior College (2002-04). He took Howard to the NJCAA regionals during his time and was also named the WACJAC Coach of the Year.

Wells is a 1996 graduate of Fresno Pacific University, having earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He and his wife, Tina, reside in Terre Haute and have three grown children – Tanner (wife Jennifer), Alex and Carlie. The couple also has a three-year old granddaughter, Brylee.
