©2019, 2021 Ray Warburton PREFACE

This family lived in the Great Sankey area of , close to the Cheshire boarder (actually it is now part of modern day and Merseyside). The family is descended from Bancroft Warburton (1738-1805) who was christened at Bowdon in 1738, the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Warburton and John Bancroft. They married 10 years after Bancroft was born. John Bancroft was first married to Mary Warburton of the Hale Barns clan. It is likely that Elizabeth Warburton, Bancroft’s mother, and later John Bancroft’s second wife, was related to Mary (possibly a cousin) but this cannot be proved. Nevertheless despite Bancroft’s illegitimate birth the clan is included in the Cheshire group. I have written a set of notes on Bancroft which explore this possibility as well as other facts surrounding Bancroft’s origins.

The tree was developed from a file provided by John Humphries with additions from David Warburton, and subject to an overhaul in 2021. Table of Contents

1 Descendants of John Bancroft & Elizabeth Warburton First Generation

1. John Bancroft. John was born abt 1700. John died in Carrington, Cheshire, in 1756. He was buried in Bowdon St Mary, Cheshire, on 17 Dec 1756.

John Bancroft was first married to Mary Warburton of Sinderland, who was the daughter of Thomas Warburton (1676-1727) of the Hale Barns clan. They had 4 children and Mary died in 1737.

John Bancroft fathered an illegitimate child with Elizabeth Warburton. The child was called Bancroft Warburton and baptised on November 2nd 1738. The parents are described as 'of Sinderland'.

On May 2nd 1749 a John Bancroft married Elizabeth Warburton.

John's will, dated December 11th 1756, and proved on January 4th 1757, refers to his wife Elizabeth, his brother-in-law John of Sinderland (his first wife Mary's brother), and makes a bequest to Bank Warburton (£20).

Furthermore an Elizabeth Bancroft of Prescot was buried at Bowdon St.Mary on January 10th 1775. Bancroft Warburton lived and held land in Penketh and Great Sankey, within Prescot parish.

Thus it would seem that John was the father of Bancroft who was born 17 months after the death of his first wife Mary. The Elizabeth Warburton he later married was probably Bancroft's mother. Elizabeth's background is uncertain but it is possible she was a relative of Mary and went to help John look after his young family after Mary's death. They maybe felt unable to marry until John's children were no longer dependant on him.

On 2 May 1749 when John was 49, he married Elizabeth Warburton in Bowdon St Mary, Cheshire. Elizabeth was born abt 1715. She was buried in Bowdon St Mary, Cheshire, on 10 Jan 1775.

They had one child: 2 i. Bancroft Warburton (1738-1805)

2 Descendants of John Bancroft & Elizabeth Warburton Second Generation

2. Bancroft Warburton (John Bancroft1). Bancroft was born in Sinderland, Cheshire, in 1738. He was christened in Bowdon St Mary, Cheshire, on 2 Nov 1738. Bancroft died in Great Sankey, Lancashire, on 7 Jan 1805. He was buried in Great Sankey, St Mary, Lancashire, on 10 Jan 1805.

Bancroft was a Yeoman Farmer and Overseer of the Poor.

He left a Will dated 16th September 1804. In it he left a messuage held in fee simple at Greston in Penketh to John subject to a payment of £1400. A second messuage held in fee simple in Penketh and currently occupied by himself and Ralph Leather was left to Thomas subject to a payment of £550. A third messuage, held on a leasehold for 3 lives 'all in being', in Great Sankey was left to James subject to payment of £350. If any son chose to refuse the estate bequeathed him it passed to the next son on the same terms with the proviso no son could have more than one estate.

Bancroft's wife received the rents and profits from all his estates for a year, and whatever household furniture she desired. After one year all farm stock and unwanted household good were to be sold. Enough of the proceeds from these sales and the estates were to be placed at interest to provide Elisabeth £50 per years until she remarried or died.

As John, Thomas, James. Margaret and William had all had £100 to promote them in the world, then Mary and Joseph should have the same on reaching 24 years old. The residue of the estate was then to be divided equally between all the children.

On 20 Apr 1767 when Bancroft was 29, he married Elizabeth Norman in Farnworth, St Luke, Lancashire. The banns of marriage between Bancroft Warburton of the parish of Prescot, husbandman, and Elizabeth Norman of this parish (Farnworth), spinster, were published on the 5th, 12th, and 19th April 1767. When Jane died, the farm passed to a Miss Rigby who lived at Huyton. The land was farmed and rented out to Mr Henry Houghton. The identification of the Margaret Warburton who married John as his first cousin is based on the fact the witnesses to the wedding match the next youngest sibling of each party. Also marrying cousins is not uncommon amongst the Warburtons of Burtonwood.

Margaret’s burial record states she was aged 21, and her abode was Moor.

On 22 Sep 1825 when Margaret was 19, she married John Warburton (7) , son of 3. John Warburton & Elizabeth Brimilow, in Warrington, St Elphin, Lancashire. John was from Prescott, and Margaret was from Warrington. Witnesses were James Warburton (probably the brother of John) and Mary Warburton (probably the sister of Margaret). John was the son of John, farmer of Burtonwood, and Margaret on his baptism. He hasn’t been found in censuses after 1851 so is probably the John whose death was registered in 1q 1854 Warrington 8c 91, aged 27.
