PUBLIC TELEVISION & PUBLIC RADIO FOR ROCHESTER MAY 2018

THE GREAT AMERICAN READ

— TWO-HOUR LAUNCH — TUESDAY, MAY 22 AT 8PM ON WXXI-TV

This TV series and nationwide campaign explores the joy of books and the power of reading. Designed to spark a national conversation about reading and the books that have inspired, moved and shaped us, The Great American Read kicks off with a two-hour special hosted by Meredith Vieira. Vieira will take viewers on a journey across the country to uncover the nation’s 100 most-loved novels, the people who love them and their authors. Following the broadcast and throughout the summer, we invite you to read and engage in the conversation by visiting the interactive website and voting for your favorite book on the list at .org/greatamericanread. The TV series will return in September with a recap and additional themed episodes exploring the nominated books, leading up to the reveal of “America’s Best-Loved Novel” on October 23.

Local support for The Great American Read is provided by Cobblestone Capital Advisors and Fidelis Care.

We are asking the community to help us match funds already committed through the Finger Lakes Economic Development Council to upgrade and rehabilitate the iconic 1920’s Art Deco theatre. A total of $1 million is required to match and secure these funds (think of it like a “challenge” during a membership campaign). If you are interested in helping to support these renovations, please visit: TheLittle.org/BigPicture On another note, please join me in congratulating WXXI News for receiving two “Excellence in Broadcasting” awards from the New York State Broadcasters Association. Our Exited podcast garnered the award in the ‘Outstanding Use of Digital Platforms’ category. Produced by the WXXI News’ Inclusion Desk, the podcast shares the journey of eight young people with disabilities as they transition into adulthood. The Inclusion Desk is designed to inform and transform attitudes and behavior about inclusion and is supported through a grant and partnership between WXXI and the Golisano Foundation. The second award was for a two-part report on the deadly results of unstable ice across the Great Lakes region. Deadly Winter won in the ‘Outstanding Public Affairs Program or Series’ category. In addition, WXXI News was nominated for four New York Associated Press Awards. We also continue to devote time, energy, and resources to educating our community about the effects of the Opioid crisis. We’re not pulling any punches in our reporting – this is a crisis that affects far too many people, not just here, but throughout the nation. It’s sometimes hard to hear the stories and the grief of the families affected, but we need to know the depth of the problem if we’re going to find solutions and eliminate this epidemic. This kind of reporting is what makes WXXI a trusted news source, one that you can depend on to provide in-depth stories that keep you connected, concerned, and informed. That’s our pledge to you, and your support helps make it possible!

Sincerely,

Norm Silverstein [email protected] | @normWXXI Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Each May and June, Reel Mind Theatre & Film Series features flms, performances and art exhibits that address the social stigma of mental illness and behavioral disorders. Ruth Cowing and Dr. Larry Guttmacher, co-directors, discuss the series and the enduring impact it has on the community. Q. How did the series come to fruition? The two of us, with Herb Katz, were supporters of the National Alliance on Mental Illness- Rochester, whose mission is to decrease stigma. We thought flm had a wonderful potential to educate about recovery, so we decided to try out a “small little series.” We were shocked when our frst screening sold out, with a line around the block! The desire for these community conversations was very clear. Q. What can the community expect from this year’s 10th anniversary series? Our kick-off on May 8th at the Memorial Art Gallery will feature a juried exhibit by Creative Wellness and a screening of the 2018 Oscar winner Heaven is a Traffic Jam on the 405, about brilliant artist

EVENTS Mindy Alper. In subsequent weeks, we’ll host a stage reading at the JCC, as well as a number of great documentaries at the Cinema Theater including Deej, about a young poet/advocate with Autism; God Knows Where I Am, shot by former Rochesterian Geraldo Puglio; and Alive Inside, about the effect of music on dementia, partially shot at St. John’s. Prior to the screening of Alive Inside, UR psychiatry chair Ben Lee presents a special musical performance. Q. What do you look forward to each year when producing the series? The Q&As, with consumers of mental health services, professionals and flm makers/subjects. The discussions are always very moving, and there’s a palpable sense of community building. Q. Inspirational story that comes to mind over the past 10 years? One of our favorite flms was OC87: The Obsessive Compulsive, Major Depression, Bipolar, Asperger’s Movie! As the Q&A began, a shy, perhaps 16 year-old boy stood up and said to the flmmaker, “You told my story.” Many of us were moved to tears. Q. What organizations do you collaborate with for this effort? This is very much a collaborative effort with local mental health providers: NAMI-Rochester, Mental Health Association, UR Department of Psychiatry, East House, DePaul, Rochester FROM LEFT TO RIGHT RUTH COWING, CO-DIRECTOR; Psychiatric Center, and many others. BE MY NEIGHBOR DAY CARA RECEIVES EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AWARD, PRESENTED (L-R) BY SUSAN ROGERS, WXXI EXECUTIVE VP AND GM; NORM SILVERSTEIN, WXXI PRESIDENT & CEO; AND ALAN REDDIG, SON OF GERALDINE REDDIG

CARA RAGER WITH AMERICAN PUPPETEER CAROLL SPINNEY. CARA RAGER NAMED WXXI EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

WXXI and the Little Theatre held its annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon in March. As part of the program, WXXI Board of Trustee Vice Chair Robert Healy presented the Geraldine B. Reddig Employee of the Year to Cara Rager, Manager of Educational Training & Family Engagement. The award is presented annually to a staff member who has made significant contributions to the organization; shows skill and ability in his/her position; displays a willingness to exceed in his/her job requirements; and possesses a positive attitude. As Manager of Educational Training & Family Engagement Cara develops and implements educational training programs on how to use WXXI and public media resources. In 2017 alone, she ran 50+ workshops for more than 800 educators, parents, and caregivers. She also coordinates community events to promote the use of WXXI’s educational programs and services, provides curriculum advice for WXXI-TV’s Homework Hotline series, and collaborates with community and statewide organizations to further engage and reach local communities. Pulled from the nomination entries, one of Cara’s peers described her as “one of the stations biggest ambassadors and lives our mission daily.” Another wrote: “If we all channeled our inner Cara, our station and community would be a much better place.” Congratulations Cara! WRUR-FM 88.5 Spotlight NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Contest Entries are in!

In January, NPR Music invited unsigned musicians of all genres to participate in their Tiny Desk Concert Contest. Musicians were asked to show why they should perform in NPR Music’s iconic Tiny Desk concert series by submitting an original video of themselves playing behind a desk of their choosing.

Thousands of video entries poured in from every state as the 2018 Contest closed at the end of March. Several submissions were from Rochester and the Finger Lakes area including The Mighty High & Dry, Passive Agressives Anonymous, Multibird, Susana Rose, Old Deer Ensemble, and others. You can check out their submissions by visiting: tinydeskcontest..org. Monthly program listings and highlights: classical915.org HD 91.5-1 CLASSICAL 91.5 PROGRAMMING Monday-Friday Saturday Sunday
