Kanpur - December 2013

A series of exclusive conversations exploring the 'shifts in power' and their impact on leadership in the 21st Century Kanpur is situated on the bank of the Ganges River. It's name may have derived from 'town of Kanhaiya' or 'town of Karna', or was it from Makanpur where the Sufi saint settled? Recent excavations in township suggest it could date back to the Vedic age.. Kanpur passed into British hands in 1801 and became one of the most important military stations of British India and an industrial city. Kanpur Memorial Church was built by the British in memory of the many who died in the various battles here while the Ganga Mela, celebrated 5 days after Holi, is in the memory of released revolutionaries held prisoners during the 1857 revolution. The propagation and popularisation of Hindi owes much to this city, with great Hindu literatteurs such as Acharya Mahavir Parasad Dwivedi and Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi. The Mall is the city centre, situated near Civil Lines area, the major economic centre of Kanpur. Kanpur Overview

The Landmark Hotel hosted 52 leaders from various professions for our dialogue. It began with an introduction by Nizar Juma, highlighting how "world power has shifted from Bharat to other countries and is on the verge of coming back following the law which states that everything moves in a cyclic fashion." The discussions focused on sensitivity, aptly summarised by Girish Pande, Income Tax Commissioner, "When we are connecting and being sensitive it is spirituality. Be sensitive to family, nature, society, nation and universe; this is the sign of strength." In their advice to the coming generation many warned of procrastination and giving value to time. Dr AS Prasad, Orthopaedic Surgeon, "What pinched me was the inequality in society. Avoid starting late in responding to your conscience, by setting your priorities right and expand your horizons early in life." The following morning over 1,000 guests gathered at LajpatBhavanto hear the outcome of the previous day's programme, opening with hindi songs by Yuko and Etsuko from Japan. Maureen Chen from Australia, introduced the Brahma Kumaris, "Power belongs to all profession and this should not be given over to business and politics but upheld within each profession. The BKs now have a big toolbox of values programmes developed by professionals in Education, Media, Business, Agriculture, Sports, Science, etc." Through a talk show, facilitated by Anthony Philips, Prof. Ashok Kumar, VC, Kanpur University shared, "We need to be content and believe that we can do whatever we have to do. Only then can we be successful." Prof. Rakesh Premi, Director, Dr. Gaur Hari Singhania Institute of Management and Research, shared how spirituality has come into the mainstream in business management institutions all over the world, "Success depends on our decisions. In meditation the mind is rested and decisions improve. The spiritual way of doing business is to stop thinking only on a personal level, and to think of society as well." Archana Nigam, Principal, DPS Kalyanpur shared, "Learning to learn is more important than the subjects taught. Education without values amounts to producing better and sharper ciminals. Rewarding needs complete transparency. Rewarding a person doing wrong, damages the whole team. My role is to provide a positive environment for people to think and implement freely." Evelyn Sasamoto from the US is now based in Japan and working with Living Values Education, "Values cannot be taught they are already inside us; we need to be able to bring them out in children with great respect." Our Chief Guest, Justice Ravindra Singh from Allahabad High Court shared, "The BKs have given us a chance to remember our history, our Adi Shakti: Brahma - creation, Vishnu - sustenance and Mahesh - the one who destroys all that is bad. All three are equally important. Our Rishis fixed a routine for us to become persons of highest stature, imbibing values and power. Practicing meditation we feel energetic and study and sacrifice leads to self-satisfaction. People from abroad are coming to India and learning India's language, culture etc. This is the Divine Land, we have been the sons of Devas and Devis." The programme included Chakradhari Didi, Director, Brahma Kumaris Moscow, "Negativity cannot transform negativity. Even a small step in the right direction is a great achievement." It ended with a soothing meditation commentary which took everyone beyond. The Future of Power Dialogue at The Landmark Hotel, 21st December 2013, Kanpur
