The present-day academic costume seemingly originated at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the 1300s. As the universities passed from ecclesiastical control, brighter colors distinguished the academic robe from the drab clerical gown. Colonial American universities based their academic regalia on the British system.
In 1893, an intercollegiate commission established a uniform code for caps, gowns and hoods for the various degrees.
Black tassels are correct for all degrees, and colored tassels are worn only by preference. The doctor's cap and president's of universities or colleges may have tassels of gold thread. The tassel should be worn draped over the left front quarter of the cap.
The usual color for academic gowns in the United States is black. The bachelor's gown is worn closed; the master's and doctor's may be worn open or closed. The shape of the sleeve is the distinguishing mark of the gowns; bachelor, long pointed sleeves; master, oblong sleeves open at the wrist; doctor, bell-shaped with three velvet bars on each sleeve.
Of the costume's three components, the hood is the most interesting. Originally it had three uses: as a head covering; as a shoulder cape; and as a bag in which alms could be collected. It is mentioned as early as 1480 in clerical literature. When large wigs were in vogue in Britain, the cape part of the hood was split in front and a narrow neckband inserted. The entire cape and hood was allowed to fall back as it is today, and it was never restored to the original style.
The hoods are lined with the color of the institution which awarded the degree to the wearer. The color of the border or collar of the hood designates the degree.

Dr. Carlos Nunez-Noriega, chair of the Technology and Consumer Sciences Department, was honored with the Dr. Alfredo G. de los Santos, Jr. Outstanding Latino Faculty in Higher Education Award by the Victoria Foundation. Pam Joraanstad, assistant chair in the Communication and World Languages Department, was named Educator of the Year by the Arizona Communication Association at the organization's annual conference. Heather Merrill, GCC teacher education, has been selected for the faculty development program in China next summer. She is one of six selected from around the District for the "Global Engagement in China 2012 Faculty Curriculum Development Program on Exploration of Chinese Approaches to Education." Joel Stoker, the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, presented "Sacred Grove, Sacred Art: Divinity within the Trees of Upstate New York" at the International Society for the Study of Religion , Nature, and Culture: Religion, Nature and Art, October 2011 in Rome, Italy/ Vatican City. Also, "Exercising the Precautionary Principle: The Response to the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster" to the American Academy of Religion (Western Region), March 2012 in Santa Clara, Calif. GCC music faculty Chuck Hulihan was featured in the May 2011 issue of "Classical Guitar Magazine" from the United Kingdom and in Japan's "Gendai Guitar Magazine." Dr. Ibrahim Nairn, Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, was named Outstanding Adjunct Faculty for spring 2012. Two Glendale Community College faculty members are Fulbright Scholar Grantees for the 2011-2012 academic year. The wife and husband team of Holly McKinzie Beene, human communication, and Leon Beene, history, were posted to Eastern Europe during the spring 2012 semester. Facilitator Janeth Franklin, adjunct faculty in Child and Family Studies with 27 years as an educator in public elementary and special education, led a workshop, "Becoming Practitioners of the New Mind, Brain and Education Science: Learning and Teaching Based on How the Brain Learns," for the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction in February on campus. Susan Mayer, GCC Nursing Department chair, and Sally Doshier, NAU School of Nursing Assistant dean presented "Curriculum Innovation: A Concurrent Associate/Baccalaureate Nursing Degree Option," at the Nurse Educator Institute in Branson, Missouri, April18- 20, 2012.
STUDENT ACCOLADES
Esther Juarez is one of just 16 students in the nation to receive an American Heart Association's first Go Red Multicultural Scholarship. She also has earned the AAA Si Se Puede and Honors Program scholarships. The 4.0 Honors Program student is on the ASU MAPP Bio Chemistry path, heading toward medical school to become a doctor.
Jhannyn Rivera, GCC student, was awarded a $2,000 scholarship at the fifth annual "40 Hispanic Leaders Under 40" event. Presented by Univision Radio, the awards honor talented Latino leaders across the state.
The $10,000 Diane H. Thomas Scholarship was awarded to football player and honors student Dylan Robert Borys, who graduated with an Associate of Art in Science with a 4.0 GPA and highest distinction.
-20- GCC student Kristina Rowden won first place in the Pearson Education/ Psi Beta Student Research Paper Awards. President Barack Obama appointed GCC alum Kimberly Owens to the Board of Trustees of the Chri stopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation. Scholarships have been awarded to GCC 4.0 students Jonah and Andrea Beltran. The twin sisters, born in the Philippines, are pursuing degrees in nursing. Jonah received the Dr. Andrew and Patricia J. Mikus Memorial and the Martin Randolph Memorial scholarships. Andrea received the Dr. Andrew and Patricia J. Mikus Memorial, Dr. Joe Griego Memorial and the GCC Employees 40th Anniversary scholarships. Jason Tadano from GCC main plus Samantha Diane Uphoff and Erin Murray from GCC North have been named to the All-Arizona Academic First Team. Brett Velez of GCC main was named to the third team. First team students compete for placement on the All-USA Academic Team sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, USA Today and the American Association of Community Colleges. Former Ace Plus student Prince Amukamara was cornerback for this year's Super Bowl champs, the New York Giants. GCC international student Hiroshi Wakamori from Japan received a $10,000 annual scholarship when he transferred to the University of Arizona with a major in biochemistry January 2012.
INSTITUTIONAL ACCOLADES Dr. Irene Kovala addressed a gathering of students, staff, faculty and guests from the community as she joined with college presidents around the nation in signing the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment. The best of the state's high school science scholars descended upon GCC for the annual Arizona Science Olympiad in March on the college's main campus. The new Alumni News Web site was launched featuring Facebook posts, Homecoming highlights, the Gaucho store plus stories about alumni, donors and scholarship winners. Dr. Allan E. Goodman, president and CEO of the Institute of International Education, congratulated President Irene Kovala for GCC being notable among this year's Fulbright Scholarship colleges. Ken Bus, singled out by Dr. Goodman for his contributions to the Fulbright program, is a 2007 Fulbright grant recipient. Glendale Community College has been designated a Military Friendly School by G.l. Jobs, a magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. The 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools. Two additional bachelor's degrees from Northern Arizona University can now be earned here at Glendale Community College. Now offered are a Bachelor of Applied Science in Administration and a Bachelor of Science/ Bachelor of Arts Interdisciplinary Studies: Technology Management. GCC was selected as a finalist in the 2012 Second Nature Climate Leadership Awards, creating a video as part of the competition. Nominations were invited from American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment signatory institutions. Gauchos earned their 17th appearance in the Valley of the Sun Bowl playing against the Dean College Bulldogs. Commencement is truly a family event. To ensure the safety of children and guests, please keep your children with you and supervised at all times. Thank you for your cooperation.
The commencement ceremony will be available on DVD. You may order a DVD of the ceremony by paying a $10.00 fee at the Cashier's Office. Submit the receipt to the Media Center located in the library. Orders will not be accepted at the commencement ceremony. DVD's will be available after June 18, 2012 in the Media Center, Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
