CLUB LIFE Governors Club September 2015 Volume 3, Number 9 On September 5, 1990, Jack Nicklaus played the inaugural round of golf on his Governors Club Signature Golf Course. On September 29, 2015, Jack Nicklaus will be here once again in celebration of 25 years of Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf at Governors Club. See story on page 3. The Golden Bear Returns to Governors Club Excitement is building among the Members and staff leading up to the Governors Club Silver Anniversary Celebration on September 29. Golf Legend Jack Nicklaus and his wife Barbara will be the guests of honor as Governors Club celebrates 25 years of Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf. Jack will speak to Members and guest dignitaries at the Silver Celebration Dinner, and a limited number of Members will have the opportunity to personally meet and mingle with Jack at the Signature Cocktail Party prior to the dinner. From the Club’s inception, Jack Nicklaus and the power of the Nicklaus brand have been a major source of pride for the Club and an important and significant factor in the creation, marketing, and promotion of Governors Club. Jack and Barbara Nicklaus’s participation in the Anniversary Celebration strengthens the Club’s connection with the Nicklaus brand that will resonate with golfers across the country and around the world for years to come. Jack and his design team created the beautiful and challenging championship course enjoyed today by Members and guests. When the spectacular original 18-hole course opened on September 5, 1990, Jack played the inaugural round. On September 22, 1994, he was in attendance for the grand opening of the Mountain Course. The second edition of the championship was hosted and sponsored by Hollywood Golf Club, when George Low won in 1906. After an eight-year hiatus overlapping World War II, the Met Open became more of a regional championship, won by many of the top local club professionals, among them Claude Harmon, Jimmy Wright, Jim Albus, David Glenz, Bobby Heins and Darrell Kestner, not to mention such storied amateurs as Chet Sanok, Jerry Courville Sr., George Zahringer III, Jim McGovern, Johnson Wagner, and Andrew Svoboda. The purse was raised to a record $150,000 in 2007, giving the championship added importance. In 2015 the MGA celebrated a major milestone in marking the championship’s 100th playing, won by Ben Polland at Winged Foot Golf Club. In 2017, The MGA welcomed a new Championship Partner, Callaway Golf. Callaway Golf is the presenting sponsor of the Met Open Championship. Eligibility The competition is open to golfers who are: 1.
