Gobbert* Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Maryland, Baltimore County *Corresponding author: [email protected], www.umbc.edu/~gobbert Technical Report HPCF{2017{3, hpcf.umbc.edu > Publications Abstract Matlab is the most popular commercial package for numerical computations in mathematics, statistics, the sciences, engineering, and other fields. Octave is a freely available software used for numerical computing. R is a popular open source freely available software often used for statistical analysis and computing. Julia is a recent open source freely available high-level programming language with a sophisticated com- piler for high-performance numerical and statistical computing. They are all available to download on the Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X operating systems. We investigate whether the three freely available software are viable alternatives to Matlab for uses in research and teaching. We compare the results on part of the equipment of the cluster maya in the UMBC High Performance Computing Facility. The equipment has 72 nodes, each with two Intel E5-2650v2 Ivy Bridge (2.6 GHz, 20 MB cache) proces- sors with 8 cores per CPU, for a total of 16 cores per node. All nodes have 64 GB of main memory and are connected by a quad-data rate InfiniBand interconnect. The tests focused on usability lead us to conclude that Octave is the most compatible with Matlab, since it uses the same syntax and has the native capability of running m-files. R was hampered by somewhat different syntax or function names and some missing functions. -

Bobrow Original ly conceivedasaneat idea that could help solve problems in the design and implementation of CLOS, the metaobject protocol framework now appears to have applicability to a wide range of problems that come up in high-level languages. This chapter sketches this wider potential, by drawing an analogy to ordinary language design, by presenting some early design principles, and by presenting an overview of three new metaobject protcols we have designed that, respectively, control the semantics of Scheme, the compilation of Scheme, and the static paral lelization of Scheme programs. Using Mathematica As a Teaching Tool in the Undergraduate Economics Curriculum
USING MATHEMATICA AS A TEACHING TOOL IN THE UNDERGRADUATE ECONOMICS CURRICULUM Gary Hodgin* Abstract In recent years, the quantitative skills required of economics students have increased significantly. Students often experience difficulty in making the transition from their mathematics courses to the use of mathematics in their economics courses. Symbolic computation programs are mathematical tools that can potentially smooth this transition. This paper illustrates a few ways in which one symbolic computation program, Mathematica, has been used in the undergraduate economics curriculum. I. Introduction The undergraduate curriculum in economics has become increasingly quantitative. An economics major typically includes college algebra, statistics, and some form of calculus in its degree requirements.1 In addition, mathematical economics and econometrics are now standard courses in many undergraduate programs. Moreover, this quantitative emphasis generally extends to other courses across the economics curriculum, particularly the intermediate theory and managerial economics courses. For example, approximately 90 percent of the intermediate microeconomics instructors included in von Allmen and Brower's survey (1998, 279) use calculus in their courses. Although one might question whether too much emphasis is placed on quantitative skills, there appears to be consensus among economics professors that mathematics is an important ingredient in undergraduate economic education. Over the past three years, I have used a symbolic computation program entitled Mathematica in two of my intermediate microeconomics and three of my managerial economics courses. My observations in these courses suggests that some students experience difficulty in making the transition from their courses in mathematics to their use of mathematics in economics. By smoothing this transition, symbolic computation programs can assist students in learning economics. -

Therefore, it is important to be able to approach the problem in other ways. Today there are numerous methods that produce numerical approximations to solutions of differential equations. Here, we introduce the oldest and simplest such method, originated by Euler about 1768. It is called the tangent line method or the Euler method. It uses a fixed step size h and generates the approximate solution. The purpose of this paper is to show the details of implementing of Euler’s method and made comparison between modify Euler’s and exact value by integration solution, as well as solve the ODE’s use built-in functions available in Scilab programming. This homework can either be done individually or in teams. Its purpose is to familiarize you with Smalltalk’s reflection facilities and to help learn about other issues in OO language design. Don’t hesitate to contact the staff if you are not clear about what to do. In this homework, you will adapt the “multiple dispatch as dispatch on tuples” approach, origi- nated by Leavens and Millstein [1], to Smalltalk. To do this you will have to read their paper and then do the following. 1. (30 points) In a new category, Tuple-Smalltalk, add a class Tuple, which has indexed instance variables.
