We are told a family from Mablethorpe recently gained the great privilege of being able to take one of their children to the Pilgrim Hospital in Boston. Just before the operation they were explaining to the child’s mother the effects of administering an anaesthetic. “When he gets this,” they said, “he won’t know a thing.” “Oh don’t bother,” the mum replied. We’ve not only got no hospitals in Mablethorpe. We’ve no secondary school either. So he don’t know a thing as it is.”

FROM FÉ TOUSSAINT OUR NEW ENGAGEMENT OFFICER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY

Earlier this year the Environment Agency asked for your views on how flood risk on the Lincolnshire coastline between & Gibraltar Point could be managed over the next 100 years. Within the coastal flood risk strategy area, there are over 20,000 homes, approximately 24,500 static caravans & 35,000 hectares of farmland. Then there is our vital tourist industry!

Following an extensive & productive consultation, the Environment Agency is now working to develop a preferred strategy & delivery plan for flood risk management on the over the next 100 years. The Environment Agency is working closely with its partners in local & central government to finalise the draft strategy document, which it plans to take forward to a public consultation in 2019.

While the Environment Agency is working to finalise the draft strategy, it is also continuing to plan next year’s beach nourishment campaign. As in previous years, Lincolnshire beaches will be replenished in 2019 to protect the sea defences & manage the risk of flooding to communities across the Lincolnshire coast.

If you have any questions about the strategy as it might affect your home, or about flood risk management along the Lincolnshire coast in general, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. You can ring me on 07584 183 691, write to me at Ceres House, Searby Road, Lincoln, LN2 4DT or email me on [email protected] Fé Toussant

POST SCRIPT: VIOLENCE HITS THE MABO STREETS… (& NOT A CCTV CAMERA IN SIGHT: JUST A FAKE NEWS REPORTER)

After the Xmas Celebrations Dave & Chloe were staggering home from the pub when Chloe pulled Dave back looking at a shimmering green dress in a shop window. “If you love me,” she says, “you’ll get me that.” So Dave puts a brick through the shop window & passes her the frock.

A bit later they’re passing a bag shop which has a stunning red hat on display. “If you love me Dave,” says Chloe, “you’ll get me that hat.” So Dave hurls another brick & picks up the hat for Chloe as it lies there amongst the shards of glass. She puts it on, a bit lopsided, but it suits, & Dave gets a good long kiss…

A few more staggered steps on & they reach Poynton’s which has some really swish shoes in their window. “If you love me Dave.” says Chloe, “you’ll get me those shoes.” At which point Dave turns & looks at Chloe & gives her a long stare & says, “Now look, Chloe, do you think I’m made of bricks?”

◀Huge numbers gathered at the War Memorial on the 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th month to remember the many who had fallen in battle, & indeed were still falling, when the Armistice was declared 80 years ago. Remembered too were the many who have sacrificed their lives since then. A record 65 wreaths were laid from members of our community.

Here’s an old postcard ▶ of Mablethorpe’s life boat.

Overleaf you will find a graphic story of a wreck off our coast in days when we must bear in mind how the crews had to row out to assist ships in danger in stormy conditions & the heavy lifeboats were pulled by horses across soft sand & into 5 foot of freezing water…. THE DEMISE OF THE OLIVE BRANCH I was told this story by an old chap I befriended in Saltfleet in the mid 60s along with other tales of woe on the Lincolnshire coast. You may not think it is relevant to Mablethorpe but please read and you will find out why. ~ Mal
