Our overall conclusion is that the debate over the concept of emergence actively going on in contemporary metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science should be focused more strongly on the realism issue, even though most emergentists (and their critics) tend to assume a rather straightforward metaphysical realism – a view that ought to be called into question on pragmatist grounds. Box 6133, 13081-970 Campinas, SP., Brazil. 106 CHARBEL NIÑO EL-HANI AND SAMI PIHLSTRÖM 1 INTRODUCTION In this paper, we examine a number of ideas concerning emergence, taking as a starting-point a discussion about a recent paper by Donald Davidson on the emergence of thought (Davidson [1997](2001)). Richard Rorty ([1987](1991), p. 113) regards Davidson’s work as “... the culmination of a line of thought in American philosophy which aims at being naturalistic without being reductionist”. He is referring to pragmatism, even though Davidson does not accept Rorty’s interpretation of himself as a pragmatist (in: Borradori (1991), p. 44. See also Pereira (1998)). We do not intend here to enter any controversy concerning what would possibly be the best way to interpret Davidson’s philosophy, as it suffices to our purposes to notice that, no matter whether Davidson is a pragmatist or not, his work is at least partly consistent with the kind of pragmatic realism we consider to be consequential to current debates about emergence. The tradition of pragmatism has, especially since John Dewey, been characterized by a commitment to non-reductive naturalism. It is indeed proper to see it as aiming at a philosophical doctrine which is naturalistic without being reductionist. In the case of Davidson’s philosophy, Rorty ([1987](1991)) claims that his non-reductive physicalism is based on the conjunction of three theses: First, the thesis that reasons can be causes; second, the thesis that there is no relation between non-sentences and sentences (or between non-beliefs and beliefs) called ‘making true’; and, third, the thesis that metaphors do not have meanings. We do not aim here either at providing an exegesis of Davidson’s original theses (which can be found in Davidson (1980), (1984)) or at presenting in full detail how they are interlinked by Rorty to lay the foundations for Davidson’s non-reductive physicalism. Rather, our goal is to discuss the issues of emergence and realism taking as a point of departure an analysis of a paper on the emergence of thought recently published by Davidson. Davidson is not among the emergence theorists. But consider, first, that Davidson was responsible for the long interest in the idea that physicalism might be properly couched in some form of the supervenience relation. Philosophers were allured by the prospect of discovering through supervenience a dependency relation that would not entail reducibility after Davidson’s usage of this concept in his “Mental Events” (Davidson [1970](1980)). A great number of philosophers tried to formulate a non-reductive physicalist stance on the grounds of supervenience, with a very limited success (see, e.g., Kim (1993), (1998)). Curiously, Davidson himself did not explore this idea further in his subsequent works. All this said, it may seem even more farfetched to use Davidson’s paper to deal with the issue of emergence. But emergentists are similarly interested in dealing with the apparent paradoxes that follow from the relations between macro-micro dependence, microdetermination, and irreducibility. And, recently, Davidson wrote a paper on the emergence of thought that comes back to the issue of the mind-body relation, and the intertwined issues about reducibility and dependence. In this paper, Davidson’s approach to the issue of emergence seemed to be similar, in important respects, to some proposals we have been defending in recent works (Pihlström (1996), (1999a), (2002); El-Hani (2000), (2002); El-Hani & Pihlström (2002)). Here, we want to examine these similarities, in order to see if they are indeed relevant to our own research. Briefly, we have been arguing that emergence theorists should pay more attention to the realism issue, casting doubt over the strong metaphysical realism to which they are usually committed. Rather, we have advocated a pragmatist alternative to metaphysical realism. If one adopts some form of pragmatic realism, the purely ontological, metaphysically realist treatment of emergence typical of most contemporary approaches will have to be given up. From the perspective of pragmatic realism, the ontology of emergents, like any ontological © Manuscrito, 2002. XXV (Special Number), pp. 105-154. 108 CHARBEL NIÑO EL-HANI AND SAMI PIHLSTRÖM issue, is irreducibly epistemologized, simply because it is embedded in our ontologically relevant practices. 2 DAVIDSON ON THE EMERGENCE OF THOUGHT In the paper we want to examine, Davidson asks: “What does it mean [...] to say some aspect of the world ‘emerged’?” (Davidson [1997](2001), p. 123). He states, thus, a problem which has been receiving more and more attention in the last few years, but goes back at least to the beginning of the twentieth century. Let us see how Davidson answers the question he poses. First of all, it is important to notice that he avoids the usual way of understanding the emergence debate, firmly committed to a strong metaphysical realism, and assumes, instead, a conceptual perspective on emergence: Emergence makes sense only as seen from a point of view, from within a set of concepts. Given our set of concepts, we can appreciate the idea that different concepts were instantiated at different times. The concepts of quantum physics were instantiated very early; the concepts of the various elements were instantiated over a longer subsequent period. The concept of life was instantiated quite recently, and the concepts of thought and language were filled out only moments ago, with the coming of higher mammals. This doesn’t mean the laws of physics changed, but it does mean that in order to describe and explain thought we need concepts that can’t be defined in the vocabulary of physics (or any of the natural sciences). Thus, in a clear sense, emergence is relative to a set of concepts. Concepts themselves are abstractions and so timeless, of course, but it can happen that certain concepts are instantiated only as time goes on. The universe is, needless to say, indifferent to our concepts. (Davidson [1997](2001), p. 123. Emphasis in the original). Our interest in Davidson’s approach, even though he is not himself deeply involved in the emergence debate, stems exactly from this attitude towards emergence, which is compatible with our recent efforts to raise the realism issue as a metaphilosophical basis of the current debates about emergentism. A PRAGMATIC REALISTIC VIEW OF EMERGENCE 109 realism is readily apparent, notwithstanding Davidson’s reluctance in accepting the ‘pragmatist’ label, in his treatment of the emergence of distinct levels not as a pure event in an independently perceived reality, but rather as a process involving an instantiation of concepts. Surely, this raises a number of important problems regarding the relation between knowledge and reality, some of which will be discussed later in this paper. It is quite clear, anyway, that one should not fear that a critique of strong realism necessarily ends in some sort of anti-realism. Even though Davidson assumes what we might describe as a conceptual approach to a typical ontological question such as that of emergence and the levels of reality, he still recognizes that the ‘universe’, that reality out there which must be assumed to underlie and in some way be responsible for experience, though remaining unknowable, is indifferent to our concepts. On the other hand, we must remember that Davidson is famous for his devastating critique of the very idea of distinguishing between our conceptual scheme(s) and the world (or the universe) as the content of those conceptual schemes.1 Davidson’s endorsement of a concept-independent ‘universe’ is also a move that results in some tensions between the critical attitude towards strong metaphysical realism and the usage of some terms which seem to have a strong realist flavor. Notice, for instance, Davidson’s reference to the ‘laws of physics’, which would remain unchanged 1 The paper ‘On the Very Idea of a Conceptual Scheme’ was first published in 1974 and is included in Davidson (1984). Physicalism claims that all facts obtain in virtue of the distribution of the fundamental entities and properties –whatever they turn out to be- of completed fundamental physics. Later I will discuss a more precise formulation. But not all contemporary philosophers embrace physicalism. Some- and though a minority not a small or un-influential one- think that physicalism is rather the metaphysics for an unjustified scientism; i.e. it is scientistic metaphysics. Those among them that think that physicalism can be clearly formulated think that it characterizes a cold, colorless, unfeeling and uninteresting world and not, they think, the world we live in.

This problem has many facets, and Churchland addresses several of them, including the metaphysical, epistemological, semantic, and methodological aspects of the debate. Churchland, of course, has very strong views on the subject, and does not hide his biases on the matter. In this paper I shall reexamine the metaphysical aspect of the mind-body problem. The metaphysical question concerns the existential status of the mind and the body, and the nature of the relationship between them. Like Churchland, I shall not hide my biases on the matter. What follows may be thought of as a rewriting of the second chapter of Churchland's book ("The Ontological Issue") from a non-naturalistic perspective. Substance Dualism René Descartes argued that the defining characteristic of minds was cogitation in a broad 2 sense, while that of bodies was spatial extension. Descartes also claimed that minds were not spatially extended, nor did bodies as such think. Thus minds and bodies were separate substances. This view has come to be called substance dualism. Descartes's argument for substance dualism can be summarized as follows: (1) Minds exist. (2) Bodies exist. (3) The defining feature of minds is cogitation. (4) The defining feature of bodies is extension. (5) That which cogitates is not extended. (6) That which is extended does not cogitate. Therefore, (7) Minds are not bodies, and bodies are not minds.

  • Dennett's Theory of the Folk Theory of Consciousness
    Dennett’s Theory of the Folk Theory of Consciousness1 Justin Sytsma Abstract: It is not uncommon to find assumptions being made about folk psychology in the discussions of phenomenal consciousness in philosophy of mind. In this article I consider one example, focusing on what Dan Dennett says about the “folk theory of consciousness.” I show that he holds that the folk believe that qualities like colors that we are acquainted with in ordinary perception are phenomenal qualities. Nonetheless, the shape of the folk theory is an empirical matter and in the absence of empirical investigation there is ample room for doubt. Fortunately, experimental evidence on the topic is now being produced by experimental philosophers and psychologists. This article contributes to this growing literature, presenting the results of six new studies on the folk view of colors and pains. I argue that the results indicate against Dennett’s theory of the folk theory of consciousness. The existence of phenomenal consciousness is often taken for granted in the philosophical and scientific literature on the topic. Sometimes, this attitude is supported by claims that phenomenal consciousness is in some way evident in our ordinary experience itself.2 The prevalence of this attitude can also be seen in the way that some skeptics about phenomenal consciousness discuss the supposed phenomenon. For example, the qualia eliminativist Dan Dennett seems to accept that belief in qualia is part of our “folk theory of consciousness” (2005, 31). In contrast, I have argued that phenomenal consciousness is not evident in ordinary experience alone—that it is not phenomenologically obvious—and that this can be drawn out by 1 To appear in the Journal of Consciousness Studies.

Putnam's thesis (the bomb) is that, in virtue of considerations from the theory of reference, it makes no sense to suppose that an empirically ideal theory, as verified as can be, might nevertheless be false because the world is not the way the theory says it is.     PUTNAM’S THEORY OF NATURAL KINDS AND THEIR NAMES IS NOT THE SAME AS KRIPKE’S IAN HACKING Collège de France Abstract Philosophers have been referring to the “Kripke–Putnam” theory of natural- kind terms for over 30 years. Although there is one common starting point, the two philosophers began with different motivations and presuppositions, and developed in different ways. Putnam’s publications on the topic evolved over the decades, certainly clarifying and probably modifying his analysis, while Kripke published nothing after 1980. The result is two very different theories about natural kinds and their names. Both accept that the meaning of a natural- kind term is not given by a description or defining properties, but is specified by its referents. From then on, Putnam rejected even the label, causal theory of reference, preferring to say historical, or collective. He called his own approach indexical. His account of substance identity stops short a number of objections that were later raised, such as what is called the qua problem. He came to reject the thought that water is necessarily H2O, and to denounce the idea of metaphysical necessity that goes beyond physical necessity. Essences never had a role in his analysis; there is no sense in which he was an essentialist. He thought of hidden structures as the usual determinant of natural kinds, but always insisted that what counts as a natural kind is relative to interests. “Natural kind” itself is itself an importantly theoretical concept, he argued. The paper also notes that Putnam says a great deal about what natural kinds are, while Kripke did not.

Dimitrijević Department of Physics Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics University of Niš Abstract The argument from causal closure of the physical (CCP) is usually considered the most powerful argument in favor of the ontological doctrine of physicalism. Many authors, most notably Papineau, assume that CCP implies that physicalism is supported by physics. I demonstrate, however, that physical science has no bias in the ontological debate between proponents of physicalism and dualism. I show that the arguments offered for CCP are effective only against the accounts of mental causation based on the action of the mental forces of a Newtonian nature, i.e. those which manifest themselves by causing accelerations. However, it is conceivable and possible that mental causation is manifested through the redistribution of energy, momentum and other conserved quantities in the system, brought about by altering the state probability distribution within the living system and leading to anomalous correlations of neural processes. After arguing that a probabilistic, interactionist model of mental causation is conceivable, which renders the argument from causal closure of the physical ineffective, I point to some basic features that such a model must have in order to be intelligible. At the same time, I indicate the way that conclusive testing of CCP can be done within the theoretical framework of physics. Smythe Retired Associate Professor, North Carolina Central University Abstract In this paper I shall examine some recent literature that purports to show that sensations or qualia are not real psychological phenomena, and that we do not have privileged access to our psychological states. In particular, I shall criticize some work by Daniel C. Dennett, who has argued against the existence of qualia and privileged access to the mental. I will maintain that Dennett has not made a convincing case for eliminating qualia, and has not shown that we do not have privileged access to psychological phenomena from a first-person point of view. Keywords: Qualia, Privileged Access, Self-Warranting Knowledge Introduction I will defend the view that certain criticisms of what has been called self-justifying or self-warranting knowledge of our psychological states have not succeeded. I will do this by arguing that attempts by Dennett and others to undermine self-justifying knowledge are unsuccessful. I begin by examining a paper by Dennett where he attempts to eliminate qualia. In a notable paper called ”Quining Qualia,” Dennett explains that he uses the verb ‘to quine’ in honor of W. V. O. Quine. It means to deny resolutely the existence or importance of something seemingly real and significant, for example, the soul. Quining qualia means saying there is no such thing as qualia.

    DIVINE IDEALISM AS PHYSICALISM? REFLECTIONS ON THE STRUCTURAL DEFINITION OF PHYSICALISM Jon W. Thompson Hempel’s Dilemma remains at the center of the problem of defining phys- icalism. In brief, the dilemma asks whether physicalism should be defined by appeal to current or future physics. If defined by current physics, phys- icalism is almost certainly false. If defined by an ideal future physics, then physicalism has little determinable content. Montero and Papineau have innovatively suggested that the dilemma may be avoided by defining phys- icalism structurally. While their definition is one among many definitions, it is significant in that—if successful—it would break the impasse for defining physicalism. I argue, however, that the structural definition fails because it counts metaphysical frameworks (crucially, versions of divine idealism) as “physicalist”—an unwelcome result for physicalists. This paper thus furthers the debate on the definition of physicalism and sheds light on the relationship between physicalism and idealism. 1. Hempel’s Dilemma Physicalism is often defined as the view that all that exists is what physics studies; but many voices have raised concerns over such a definition. In- deed, the problem of defining physicalism has been with us for some time now.1 “Hempel’s Dilemma” puts the problem in exacting focus: when the physicalist claims that all that exists is physical, is she claiming that [A] All that exists is what is studied by current physics or that [B] All that exists is what is studied by some ideal, perhaps future, physics?2 If the physi- calist intends [A], then physicalism is clearly false.
