Person or event commemorated:

History of The Elcho Shield was commissioned by Lord Elcho as a prize for a rifle shooting match between Commission Scotland and England. Lord Elcho asked his friend, the artist George Frederick Watts, to design a : suitable trophy. Watts decided to design a shield six feet by three feet, and drew the figures and scenes for subjects which Lord Elcho had suggested. The model for the figure of the English soldier was Reginald Cholmondely, an amateur artist and assistant to Watts. The shape of the shield was designed by the son of Mr Caley, the MP for the West Riding of Yorkshire. The shield hanging in the box corridor of the Faculty of Advocates is the plaster model which was completed in 1863. In November 1864 it was presented to the Lord Provost of Edinburgh in Parliament Square, and then hung in the lobby of Parliament House. In 1866 Horatio Ross wrote to the Faculty of Advocates offering the Faculty the shield. This offer was accepted. [In 1865 the iron shield was finished at the foundry of Elkington & Co. where it had been executed by Leonard Morel-Ladeuil.] Exhibitions: Related Works: Legal Precedents: References: Rosemary Meldrum, A History of the Elcho Shield, National Rifle Club of Scotland websit, Notes: Photo Details: ID By Date Medium Ref Digitised Digi ref Selected? Signatures: Physical Carved wooden fire surround composed of a pair of fluted pilasters with cherub-head capitals on each Description: side, and three relief panels separated by pilasters each carved with a faun with crossed legs in a kind of restraint, above a grotesque open-mouthed winged head. The panels are carved with scenes from the Death of Prince Arthur: in the panel on the left is a group of five people on steps leading up to a building. They are two soldiers, a man with keys and a torch, and a man with a sword drawn ready to strike a kneeling youth. In the centre panel a king in armour on a rearing horse has his sword drawn in defense, while a soldier and an archer try to pull him down. Several soldiers, carved in low relief surround the central group. In the panel on the right a rearing horse has unseated its rider. This man wears a garment patterned with fleurs de lis, and is assailed by soldiers. In the background is a castle and wheeling gulls. A broken sword is in the lower right foreground.

Person or event commemorated:

History of According to John Pinkerton Q.C. the chimney piece is a composite of North Italian, North European Commission and Victorian carving. Pinkerton says that the central panel of Christ presenting the keys is North : Italian of about 1400, 'one of the scenes at table, and three of the four large figures are also early work, Page 1 of 2 PMSA NRP: Work Record Ref: EDIN1452 06-Jun-11 © PMSA RAC but much of the rest consists of Victorian carving made to fill the spaces. The Annunciation is Northern European work of the sixteenth century.'
