The Market Environment Section discusses key indicators that drive demand for plastic pipe, including world energy supply and water usage trends, and Freedonia’s uniquely developed macroeconomic indicators. MARKET ENVIRONMENT

This information provides you with an Legislation & Regulatory Considerations understanding and an analysis of the climate in which the global plastic pipe The pipe industry encompasses a variety of materials and production technologies. Consequently, the industry is subject to a variety of manufacturing regulations and industry operates and helps you build building codes. Concerns about pipe products includeSAMPLE factors such PAGE as pressure your market strategy to sustain long- tolerances, strength, compressibility and integrity so that premature failure and term growth. water contamination may be avoided in building and sewage applications. Pipe applications such as underground gasoline or crude petroleum lines, natural gas distribution and underground fire protection systems are subject to regulation as well. The regulatory scrutiny faced by the pipe industry varies around the world, with more exacting strictures common in developed countries, where the political infrastructure for regulation is better developed. Regulatory compliance is not a major financial burden to most pipe producers although exceptions do exist. For example, in most countries polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe manufacture is closely regulated because of the toxicity of the vinyl chloride monomer used in its manufacture.

During the last decade of the 20th century, the chemical industry was faced with increased environmental and regulatory scrutiny. Nevertheless, few synthetic materials weathered as much controversy as polyvinyl chloride. In part, the concerns about the plastic resin resulted from an intense, organized campaign by environmental activists directed at the elimination of chlorine and all chlorine- containing products. Since PVC contains approximately 50 percent chlorine by weight, groups such as Greenpeace have agitated for a gradual phaseout of PVC leading to a complete ban in all uses. Although this scenario is highly unlikely, even on a limited regional basis, these types of efforts have led to the substitution of other resins where feasible. The concerns about PVC have led to some substitution of other plastic pipe in place of PVC pipe. In Western Europe, for example, environmental concerns about polyvinyl chloride have contributed to

The World Overview Section high- lights the key issues that have affected WORLD OVERVIEW the global plastic pipe market over the past ten years and summarizes contrib- uting growth factors. Plastic Pipe Demand by Region

Global demand for plastic pipe is projected to increase 4.2 percent per annum This information helps you: through 2005 to six billion meters, accountingSAMPLE for approximately PAGE 47 percent of total pipe demand. During the earlier period, plastic pipe • Propose new areas for development demand grew faster in North America than in any other region, benefiting from strong construction activity in the dominant US market and infrastructure development in Mexico. Over the forecast period, the best opportunities for plastic pipe will be in the Asia/Pacific region and Latin America.

In the Asia/Pacific region, demand for plastic pipe is forecast to advance 6.4 percent per year through 2005 to 1.4 billion meters. Improving construction activity in some of the Asian countries affected by the 1997-1998 financial crisis will benefit demand for plastic pipe. Infrastructure development in the region will generate demand for plastic pipe in a variety of applications. In residential building construction, plastic pipe will be used for potable water delivery in urban areas. Efforts to upgrade water treatment systems will spur demand for plastic pipe in drainage and sewage use. Growing economies in the region will generate demand for pipe in networks for telecommunications and natural gas distribution.

Demand for plastic pipe in Latin America is expected to rise six percent per annum through 2005 to 365 million meters. Infrastructure projects in Latin America will boostSAMPLE demand for TABLE plastic pipe, such as in water treatment and potable water supply. Residential construction will offer opportunities for drain, waste and vent pipe, as well as potable water pipe. Expansions of natural gas and telecom- munications networks will also contribute to plastic pipe demand.

These Sections analyze demand trends and consider the threats and opportunities for 23 countries and six ASIA/PACIFIC regions.

South Korea: Plastic Pipe Demand

Demand for plastic pipe in South Korea is expected to reach 100 million meters in 2005 on annual gains of nine percent. Gains will reverse the declines of the 1995- 2000 period as economic activity expands and SAMPLEresidential construction PAGE recovers. Plastic pipe will find opportunities in replacement of potable water delivery pipe, as well as in water distribution pipe in new building construction. Rising natural gas consumption will benefit demand for plastic pipe in gas distribution applications.

Polyvinyl chloride will remain the leading resin for plastic pipe in South Korea, benefiting from building construction and potable water use for plastic pipe. Demand for PVC pipe in 2005 is projected to reach 155,000 metric tons, or roughly 70 percent of the total. Faster increases will be achieved, however, by high density polyethylene pipe, with gains of over ten percent per year over the forecast period to 53,000 metric tons. Demand for HDPE pipe will be aided by increased use of natural gas and by installations of radiant heating systems in building construction. Crosslinked HDPE pipe accounts for a majority of the piping used for underfloor radiant heating in the country.
