2 2013 Friends of Scouting The Three Fires Council is kicking off the annual Friends of Scouting campaign this month. The Council & District leadership have already made a pledge to Friends of Scouting to support a quality program for 2013. Your District is already conducting Friends of Scouting presentations and if you have not signed up yet please contact your District Executive or Family FOS Chair or click the button below to sign up electronically. Your District has a great team of volunteers to conduct the presentation and assist your unit by allowing every family to hear about the impact Scouting is having and giving them the opportunity to support our great program. Click the button below to sign up now for your 2013 Family Friends of Scouting Presentation and register your Unit Coordinator.

I would encourage every unit to recruit one leader or parent to share a personal story the night of the FOS presentation about the impact Scouting has had on their life or their family. The Three Fires Council is blessed to have such a wealth of outstanding Scouting examples. Your commitment to our program and our boys is deeply appreciated. With your support this year I know we will have the funding needed to instill values, develop future leaders, and serve our communities. It will cost the Three Fires Council $150 this year to support one Scout. We encourage every family to make a gift of $150 in 2013 or more if you have the means. Most importantly we would like every family to make a gift they are comfortable with. For everyone that pledges $150 you will receive a special limited edition Friends of Scouting Council Strip. Please give generously this year so we can offer Scouting to those less fortunate and provide a quality program for all our youth.

Please let me know if I can be of assistance as you plan your 2013 Unit Friends of Scouting campaign or if you have any questions. Ron Wentzell, Director of Development, (630) 797-4615

Friends of Scouting—Matching Gifts from Employers Many employers/businesses will match their employees’ charitable contributions. For instance, if you give $500 to the Three Fires Council and your employer has a matching gifts program, the Council would receive the benefit of $1,000. If you are a contributor to the Three Fires Council, or are considering a contribution, please check with your employer to see if this program exists or if your employer might be interested in starting it. To help determine matching gifts companies, we are asking that everyone write down their employer on the employer name line on your Friends of Scouting Card.

5. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Initiative Why STEM? - We live in a time of great opportunity. The spirit of innovation can help us overcome challenges and ensure a prosperous and secure future. To seize this opportunity, we must position ourselves at the cutting edge of scientific discovery and technological innovation. Yet our country is falling behind in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This is why many professionals and educators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics believe the United States should do more now than ever to encourage students to enter STEM-related fields. These experts say our young people need strong STEM skills to compete in the world market. We must work together to cultivate the next generation of critical thinkers and innovators. What Are the Nova Awards? - The Boy Scouts of America developed the Nova Awards program to excite and expand a sense of wonder in our Scouts. By working with an adult counselor or mentor, the various modules allow them to explore the basic principles of STEM and discover how fun and fascinating STEM can be. The Supernova awards are offered for those who enjoy a super challenge. For more information about STEM and the Nova Awards program, visit the links below. Discover how the Nova Awards program helps youth be "Prepared. For Life." About the NOVA Awards Program Are you currently a STEM related Merit Badge Counselor? The adult will work closely with the youth for weeks or months, providing significant input and guidance to Supernova candidates. Please apply to be a Supernova Mentor by turning in a Supernova Mentor Application to your District Advance- ment Chair, Council Advancement Chair, Bob Charles, or the STEM/NOVA Chair, Ed Susmilch.
