Page 1 - 013 Sacred Heart Parish Year of St. Joseph Joseph Will Help You Be Poor In Spirit Saint Joseph was unpretenƟous in the eyes of the world. He had no worldly ambiƟon or desire for recogniƟon. The Holy Family was poor. Very poor. The Holy Family lived on Divine Providence. AŌer returning to Nazareth from Egypt, the Holy Family lived for almost 30 years in a house in Nazareth that was simple and small. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Mt 5:3). Those who are detached from the things of this world are not far from the Kingdom of Heaven. When a person is detached from the things of this world, poverty is under- stood to be a virtue. The person who is detached from material things is truly blessed in spirit and rich in the sight of God. This explains why St. Joseph is called “Lover of Poverty.” He relied on Divine Providence for all of his needs. Saint Joseph will teach you how to be detached from material things and abandoned to Divine Providence. You will never find true happiness in material goods. Those who allow their relaƟon- ship to God to depend on whether they have worldly things are desƟned for unhappiness. The silence of St. Joseph proves his greatness and poverty of spirit. Saint Joseph never saw the results of his hard work and sacrifice. He trusted that God would bring good fruit from his labor and years of service to Jesus and Mary. And God did - more than St. Joseph could have ever imagined. He was poor in the world, but rich in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Page 2 - 013 Sacred Heart Parish Sacred Heart/First Friday Devotions

First Friday Masses are dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In the 1600’s, Christ appeared to a young nun now known as St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and asked her to encourage the faithful to receive Holy Communion on the first Friday of nine consecutive months with the intention of making reparation to His Sacred Heart for people’s sins and ingratitude and to offer each Holy Communion as an act of atonement for offenses against the . Christ promised that those who followed this practice would receive mercy when they died.

The nun reported the visions of Christ to her superiors, who dismissed them as delusions. After years of ridicule, she finally gained respect in 1686 when a newly elected superior, Mother Melin, said that the nuns could observe a private feast day for the Sacred Heart within the walls of the convent.

On May 8, 1873, Pope Pius IX granted approval for Catholics to participate in devotion to the Sacred Heart.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Congratulations When Jesus returned to his hometown, he to the McGuigan family was not exactly greeted like a “hometown hero.” His contemporaries could see him on the Baptism of their son, only as a carpenter, and not the Messiah: James John McGuigan “So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.” Baptismal Bargain We know that Jesus went on to perform the mightiest of deeds - dying and rising from When we are baptized, God the dead. And yet, even today, he would be forms an unbreakable “amazed at our lack of faith.” Today’s covenant with us promising Gospel and the other readings encourage His unconditional love. us to do a check-up of our spiritual health “For I am convinced that and pray for the grace to continue to grow neither death, nor life, in faith. We can also pray for others who nor angels, nor principalities, may be questioning or have lost their faith, nor present things, nor future inviting them to consider coming to church things, nor powers, nor with us or simply offering to pray with and height, nor depth, nor any for them. other creature will be able to By: The Faithful Disciple separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39). Our part of the bargain is to obey him and love Him, and put Him first in our lives. At Baptism, we are marked as God’s child for life. That won’t change. Source: Growing in Faith
