P.G. Departmentof Zoology of erstwhile (Autonomous) Collegewas established in the year 1983-84 and the M. Phil course was introduced in the year 2009-10. The college is currently affiliated to Khallikote University. The department offers core course in B.Sc. Zoology and General Elective comprising 6 semesters/3years, M.Sc. comprising 4 semesters/2 years and M.Phil. 2 semesters/1year. Selection of students to choose a career in B.Sc. is executed through e-admission process while M.Sc. and MPhil on the basis of entrance and marks secured in B.Sc. and for M.Sc. through entrance exams. Since establishment of the dept. many students have shown their efficiency in different govt. and private sectors.

Faculty Profile

1. Mr Sushil Kumar Rathore, Asst. Professor & HOD Mr Sushil Kumar Rathore is currently the head of the Zoology department since 1st February 2018 at Khallikote autonomous College, Berhampur. He was scientist ‘B’ and ‘C’ at ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre, working on national projects of National Rotavirus Surveillance which helped to initiate the national rotavirus vaccination programme for children and setting up of Model Rural Health Research Unit in Odisha . He has secured expertise in biomedical research related to viral diseases and epidemiological studies when he was pursuing his doctoral degree at ICMR-RMRC in the Dept. of virology under the supervision of Dr Bhagirathi Dwibedi. He obtained his MSc in Zoology from with specialization in applied zoology and biotechnology in 2008. He qualified UGC-CSIR NET and ICMR-JRF in 2009 and started his doctoral work at ICMR-RMRC. He has credit of publishing five research articles in peer reviewed journals and many abstracts/full length papers/posters at national and international conferences/symposia.

2. Dr Bibhuti Prasad Barik, Asst Professor Dr. Bibhuti Prasad Barik has been working as Assistant Professor in Zoology in the PG Dept. of Zoology, Khallikote Autonomous College, Berhampur, since June 2014. Previously he was working as Assistant Professor and Head in the Post Graduate Department of Bioinformatics, North Orissa University, from December 2004 till May 2014. He has served as faculty member in Zoology and Bioinformatics in different research and academic institutions. He has around 15 years of teaching and research experience in both College and University level. His current field of research interests includes Computational biology and phylogenetics. He has published research papers. He has delivered many invited talks in Universities, CSIR-research institutes, colleges and All Radio. He has also served as Co-Coordinator, DBT-Govt. of India sponsored Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility, North Orissa University, , India.

3. Dr Rachna Panda, Guest faculty

Dr. Rachna Panda has been working as a guest faculty in Zoology in the P.G. Department of Zoology, Khallikote Autonomous College since 12th July, 2018. She has obtained her Master degree in Marine Biology from in the year 2000 with specialization in Remote Sensing. She has also a second master degree in Ecology& Environment from Indian Institute of Ecology and Environment (IIEE), New Delhi. She completed M.Phil in 2004 on the topic “Studies 4

on the Planktonic Chaetognaths in the coastal waters of Gopalpur, East-Coast of India”. Dr. Panda was awarded doctoral degree in Marine Biology from Berhampur University on the research topic, “Studies on Zooplankton of Rushikulya Estuary and adjoining coastal waters, East-Coast of India” in 2017. Her field of research interest ranges from marine biology to biological processes studies and satellite oceanography. She had worked as a JRF in a MoES sponsored project entitled, “Bio- toxicological studies in coastal fishes of Odisha” during 2001-2003 followed by a position of Research Fellow under a UGC funded project. She has a number of research papers and book chapters in peer reviewed journals and books. She has attended national seminars, conferences and consultative workshops relating to the environment and marine biological scenario of India.

4. Mr Somanath Sahoo, Guest faculty Mr. Somanath Sahoo is working as a guest lecturer in P.G. Department of Zoology, Khallikote Autonomous College, Berhampur since 1st August, 2017. He has one year teaching experience at graduation and post-graduation level. He has completed his M.Sc. Zoology from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and M.Phil. Zoology from Berhampur University, Berhampur. He has qualified CSIR-NET (LS) in 2012. His field of specialization is Ecology and Animal Behaviour. He has also worked as research fellow in a DST-SERB sponsored research project, titled “Ecology and habitat suitability of Indian spiny-tailed lizard, Saarahardwickii in Rajasthan, India”. He has published his research paper in one international and 3 national journals.

5. Ms Bibarani Tripathy, Guest faculty

Miss BibaraniTripathy is working as a guest lecturer in P. G. Dept. of Zoology, Khallikote Autonomous College, Berhampur, since 12th June, 2018. She has stood 1st class 1st in M. Sc. from Khallikote Autonomous College during 2011-12. Her filed of specialization is Cell physiology and Biochemistry in her post-graduate level and she has also completed MPhil relating to Histopathology & Toxicology. She has also worked as project assistant funded by DBT, Govt. of India. She has published articles in national and international journals. She had received the Best Research Scholar award in science from Berhampur University. She is continuing her Ph.D. in Zoology at Berhampur University.

6. Ms. Manisha Brahma, Guest faculty

Ms. Manisha Brahma is working as a guest Lecturer in P.G. Department of Zoology, Khallikote Autonomous College, Berhampur, since 9th August 2018. She has 2 years of teaching

experiences at Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Bidyarthi Science College, . Her field of specialization was Cell and Molecular Biology in M.Sc. She was awarded “Dr. P.K. Baliarsingh Cash Prize” for securing highest mark in her specialization paper from P.G Department of Zoology, Berhampur University. She has qualified GATE-2018 in Life Sciences and CSIR-NET (LS) in Life Sciences, December 2017 with all India Rank 41.

Department Activities:

Every year the department is conducting Fresher’s Day for the UG, PG and M.Phil. first year incumbents, Saraswati puja and Ganesh puja, Teacher’s Day, seminars and field visits to relevant places for the UG and PG students. At the end of the academic session the Annual Day celebration is followed by the Farewell of the final year UG, PG and M. Phil students.

He also presented a paper on “Documentation and conservation of waterfowls in Berhampur forest division” at National Seminar on Biodiversity assessment and wildlife management held in School of Wildlife and Remote Sensing , North Orissa University, Baripada.  M.Phil student Biswajyoti Sahoo, +3 Final year students Asish Kumar Das and Satyanarayan Panda went for “Carnivore monitoring” in Khallikote forest organized by Forest Department, Government of Odisha.

2. Field study - Practical education is always preferable as compared to theoretical knowledge. So students visit to different places relevant to their course.

 Every year under graduate students visit to nearby poultry farm, fish farm. Nandana Kanana and Chilika to study about the habit, habitat and breeding of wild animals, fowl and fish culture.  The post graduate students also have gone on study tour to different Universities, Hatcheries within and outside Odisha since the establishment of the department.  The UG/PG students in the year 2018-19 visited to Zoological Survey of India, Gopalpur-on - sea, Ganjam.  A field trip to Hotspring, Jiranga and nearby deer park Gajapati district on 10th March, 2018.

8. UGC sponsored Inter-Departmental Seminar

A one day UGC Sponsored One Day Inter - Departmental Seminar, “Under competency building initiatives for faculty and students under UGC XIIth plan GDA (Head 31)” was held in P.G. Department of Zoology, Khallikote University during, 2016. The theme of the seminar was “Current Trends in Zoology” and two eminent academicians and scientists of international repute Dr Tarini C. Kara, Professor in Zoology, Government of Odisha and Dr Jayakrushna Panigrahi, Secretary, Orissa Environmental Society, Bhubaneswar, India and Head, Dept. of Zoology & Environmental Science, Sri Jayadev College of Education & Technology, Bhubaneswarwere invited to deliver talks on this occasion. The seminar was attended by nearly 100 students of both undergraduate and postgraduate programs of Department of Zoology, Khallikote University and about 22 faculty members of Khallikote University and its cluster colleges.
